Effective Habits for Effective Study

Have you read the topic 7 habits of highly effective people posted by caubetramtinh? If you haven''t, you really should do it right now since it''s quite helpful for you in actual life. This time, I''m gonna post something that is partially adapted from those 7 habits. They are, however, not from higly effective people in general but highly effective learners.

You can obviously prepare yourself *****cceed in your studies. Try to develop and appreciate the following habits:

1.Take responsibility for yourself
Responsibility is recognition that in order *****cceed
you can make decisions about your priorities, your time, and your resources.

2. Center yourself around your values and principles
Don''t let friends and acquaintances dictate what you consider important.

3. Put first things first
Follow up on the priorities you have set for yourself, and don''t let others, or other interests, distract you from your goals.

4. Discover your key productivity periods and places
Morning, afternoon, evening; study spaces where you can be the most focused and productive. Prioritize these for your most difficult study challenges

5. Consider yourself in a win-win situation
You win by doing your best and contributing your best to a class, whether for yourself, your fellow students, and even for your teachers and instructors. If you are content with your performance, a grade becomes an external check on your performance, which may not coincide with your internally arrived at benefits

6. First understand others, then attempt to be understood
When you have an issue with an instructor, for example a questionable grade, an assignment deadline extension, put yourself in the instructor''s place. Now ask yourself how you can best make your argument given his/her situation

7. Look for better solutions to problems
For example, if you don''t understand the course material, don''t just re-read the material. Try something else! Consult with the professor, a tutor, an academic advisor, a classmate, a study group, or your school''s study skills center

8. Look to continually challenge yourself

Actually, I don''t figure out an appr. VN word for "win-win" things. I come across this phrase in some of the environm''t texts but just can''t render it into a VN equivalence, prob. ''cause I''m too poor on both my Engl. and my mother tongue. Can anyone give just one correct word for WIN-WIN things?

A "win-win" situation = hmm..let''s translates it roughly as a situation that you can not lose. You win anyway. Like hmm... kiểu dì cũng thắng.
^^;; My Vietnamese is too bad to help you translating it. I understand the meaning..just can''t translate it.

In some Vietnamese versions of "7 Habits of Highly Effective People", they translated "Win-Win" as "Thắng-Thắng"
However, I think it means "Hợp tác để cùng phát triển".
What about your opinions ?

Ano. It''s nothing like that at all. It means that..if you DO something, you cannot lose. Say..if you are going to buy a cookie. If you DO get the cookie, then you have something to eat, but if you do NOT get the cookie, you have money left to spend, EITHER way you''ll still have something. So you do not lose.
That was a VERY bad example..^^;;..but you get the drift.
It basicallys mean that you are in a SPECIAL situation where you just can NOT lose, no matter what you do.

Spinesplitter that''''s a good question. A win-win situation is the result of a game where both sides win. In other words, it is the ultimate goal of a negotiation, where both sides are satisfied with the agreement they''ve reached. You can find this term in every text about the art/skill of negotiation. As you can say roughly in Vietnamese "hai bên cùng có lợi", or if you prefer, "vẹn cả đôi đàng".
Say, men adore beauty and women are fond of money. So, when a beautiful girl marries a millionaire, that''''s a win-win situation. (just kidding no offense)
To Sil: I haven''''t heard of that definition before but I respect your knowledge of English so I guess that may be an alternative meaning. However, in this specific context, "mutual cooperation" would make much more sense.

I think your example is good but it''s not the meaning of "Win-win" in context of "7 Habits of Highly Effective People".
Here''s an excerpt in the book :

So far, I truly only know ONE kind of ''win-win'' in all contexts and I have learnt that it is self-imposed, that is imposed on yourself only, it has nothing to do with others, it means that you cannot lose in this situation, no matter what you chose to do.
I am so far completely unaware of the alternative meaning that is "Doi ben cung co loi" that you both mentioned..=). I have further investigated it with friends who are English native speakers as well as their teacher, and was confirmed that "win-win" can only mean one thing, that is not being able to lose in a certain situation.
HOWEVER..I am aware that noone is able to grasp the English language in all aspects, =) so I respect both of yours definitions and will leave it at that. However though, I re-read the paragraph that the "win-win" is applied to, and found that it makes perfect sense if I translate it in the tra***ional sense. ^^;;
I''m just too stubborn for my own good. I need to retire for the rest of the evening for now, Thank you though =) I appreciate it and you never know, you learn something new everyday.

Well, I suppose Ly Trung Binh''s translation is perfectly accurate. Win-win is defined as an arrangement in which all parties benefit.

B: Oh yes of course, you take my old car for nothing, and I pay off this new one for the next 38 years, I am a winner then aren''t I?
The smarmy salesman or manager and the client both have positive outcomes in this situation.
