    Figurative language
"Love is food for the soul, but jealousy is poison." (George Bernard Shaw)
A "metaphor" compares two things. Shaw isn''t saying "love is food" literally; he is comparing love to food. Love is necessary for the soul, just as food is necessary for our bodies. Poison will kill the body and jealousy can kill the soul. This is an example of figurative language.
Try copying Shaw''s style of writing. Use his sentence structure, but use your own words to describe one of the following: hate, revenge, greed, happiness, sadness, or any other emotion.

    LANGUAGE USAGE
When we are talking about eating at restaurants, there are several idioms we use in English. When you go to a restaurant to eat, it is called "eating out." When you order food from a restaurant, but take it home to eat, it is called "ordering take-out." Example:
    Marie: Let''s eat out tonight.
Evan: No, I''d rather stay home. We can order take-out.
When a waiter or waitress asks what you want to eat, it is called "taking your order." Example:
Waitress: May I take your order?
When you tell the waitress what you want, it is called "giving your order." Example:
Customer: I would like to give my order now.
Tell if each statement is true or false:
    1. When you eat at home it is called "eating out."
    2. When you go to a restaurant, the waiter gives your order.
    3. Ordering take-out is when you get food from a restaurant to eat at home.
    Answers:
    1. False; eating at a restaurant is called "eating out."
    2. False; the waiter takes your order.
    3. True.

    What am I describing?
It stood in the center of the kitchen. Alone. Waiting. After so much time, it should have seemed older. As I traced the deep grooves in its surface, I remembered the many people who had swirled in and around and out of my life like leaves in the autumn wind. They were gone, but here it stood, strangely, more permanent and solid than many of my relationships.
    VOCABULARY
    traced followed
    grooves carved lines
I''m describing a table. This is an example of "figurative" language. By moving away from describing the literal look of the table, I am trying to give my writing some _expression. I am trying to describe a mood.

There are many different words for foods to learn, of course. Here are some items you might find on a breakfast menu:
    1. sausage
    2. bacon
    3. pancakes
    4. toast
    5. muffin
    6. bagel
    7. coffee
    8. tea
    9. hot chocolate
    10. eggs (scrambled, fried, or omelet)
    11. French toast (bread dipped in egg batter and cooked)
    12. hash browns or home fries (fried potatoes)
    13. fruit juice (orange, tomato, cranberry)
Choose several items from the "menu" above, and practice ordering them. Ask a friend to play the role of the waiter and say, "May I take your order?" Then give your order. Remember to begin with, "I would like. . ."
For example, "I would like scrambled eggs, bacon, hash browns, and a bagel. I would also like a large orange juice and a cup of coffee, please."

    CULTURAL NOTE
Breakfast is a very popular meal to eat out in the United States. There are restaurants called "diners" that are often open 24 hours a day and serve breakfast foods any time of day or night. The word "diner" originally meant the car on a train where food was served (a shorter form of "dining car").

    Going to the beach
    BEECH AND BEACH
"ee" in English can sound exactly like "ea". Beech, a tree whose leaves turn purplish-brown in the fall, sounds exactly like beach, the place where the land touches the water on lakes, oceans or rivers. Let''''s look at the a couple more "ea" and "ee" words.

Sea - a body of water
See - to be able to use one''''s eyes.
Dear - someone who is special to you
Deer - a four-legged animal with brown fur and horns that lives in the woods.
Can you think of any others?
