    SAILBOATS AND MOTORBOATS
Look at these lists of things that sailboats and motorboats can do. Find two items in each list that are incorrect.
    SAILBOAT
    1. It uses wind and motor power.
    2. It uses a wooden sail.
    3. It uses a sail when there is no wind.
    4. The motor has a propeller inside makes the boat move through the water.
    MOTORBOAT
    1. It usually uses only motor power.
    2. It uses wind and oil to run a motor.
    3. It sometimes uses a motor outside the boat and sometimes has a motor inside the boat.
    4. It uses a sail made of heavy cloth.
ANSWERS: The four incorrect items are 2) and 3) and 2) and 4).

Sailboats never have wooden sails and motorboats never have sails made of heavy cloth. Only sailboats have sails made of cloth. Sailboats cannot use their sails when there is no wind so they need to use a motor to help the sailboat move through the water. Even if there is wind, sailboats cannot always use their sails when they are boating down small waterways. Motorboat motors may use gasoline (gas) and oil but don''t use wind and oil to power their motors.
What do you like about summer sports? What do you dislike? Come up with your own answer.

    CAN YOU CANOE?
Read this description about canoeing. Can you find the prepositions?
Canoeing is a popular way of traveling along a river. A canoe is a long, narrow boat that needs no engine. Tra***ional canoes are made of wood, but modern ones are made of fibreglass. One person in the back of the canoe uses a paddle to move the canoe left or right. Another person in the middle of the canoe uses a paddle to move the canoe forward. It is important to know that when you''''re in a canoe, sitting and standing can be difficult because the canoe can go under water easily.
Answer: The prepositions are "along", "of", "in", "under".
We can say ''''made of'''' or ''''made from''''. Do you know the difference? We use ''''made of'''' when the material is not changed, and we use ''''made from'''' when there is process which changes the material. For example:

    Canoes are made of wood.
    Paper is made from wood.

    Let''s Get to Work!
Technology has changed how we look for work. Not long ago, people created one resume that outlined their work experience. When applying for a job, they would send this resume with different cover letters that described specific skills for the job. With the increasing use of word processors, applicants are now expected to customize not only their cover letter, but also their resume for every job.

    GRAMMAR LESSON
"Not only/but also" is an example of a paired (or "correlative") conjunction. The parts of speech it joins should be the same. For example, "not only their (possessive adjective)Ăưbut also their (possessive adjective)." Other paired conjunctions include: both/and, whether/or, neither/nor, either/or
Try writing a few sentences using paired conjunctions.

    Summer footwear
In many restaurants and stores in the USA, signs are posted that tell customers that they must wear a shirt and shoes or they cannot enter. In areas where there are beaches, people sometimes walk barefoot (without shoes) and will wear only a bathing suit without a shirt. Because bare feet may be dirty and for other health reasons, store and restaurant owners must post a sign stating that shirts and shoes are necessary.

What does "required" mean? Find other words in the lesson that mean the same thing.
Answer: ''must'' and ''necessary'' are the two expressions that mean "required".

    Asking directions
Michael is visiting Washington, D.C. He has stopped to ask directions.
Michael: Excuse me, how do I get to the Air and Space Museum?
Vendor: First, walk three blocks down Pennsylvania Avenue toward the Capitol building.
    Michael: Heading east?
Vendor: Yes. Then turn right on 7th Street and walk in front of the National Gallery of Art. The Air and Space Museum will be on your left.
    Michael: Thank you very much.
Have you ever been lost in an unfamiliar place? Did you have to ask directions? What happened?

    Summer footwear
Cheap, light and made for beachwear, flip flops are a very simple form of sandal. The sole of a flip flop is foam rubber. The straps are made of plastic and join the sole between the big toe and spread out in two straps to the edge of the sole. Flip flops are easy to put on and take off and they protect bare feet from the hot sand and garbage hiding in the hot sand on beaches.

Can you find 3 two-word verbs in this reading? A two-word is like "come up".
Answer: put on, take off, spread out

    LEMONADE
Do you know what the word "ingredients" means? Try to find the list of "ingredients" that make the summer drink, lemonade.
Lemonade is a very popular summer drink. It is made with water, lemon juice, a sweetener such as sugar or honey and it is served over ice. Children in the U.S.A. often make lemonade and sell it on tables by the side of the road on hot summer days. These lemonade "stands" sell homemade lemonade or lemonade from concentrate (a powder or frozen mixture of lemon juice and sweetener without the water). Lemonade from lemonade stands should never cost more than $1.00 per glass but in restaurants or cafes, it often costs at least $1.00 US.

The measurements in a popular lemonade recipe are 1 cup of water to 1.5 tablespoon of lemon juice and 3-4 tablespoons of sugar. First you boil the sugar and the water and mix them together well. Add the lemon juice, stir, pour over ice and you have lemonade! Enjoy!
Answer: The correct ingredients for lemonade are water, lemon juice and a sweetener.

    SODA
What kinds of American sodas are found in your country? What is your favorite flavor of soda?
Which word is a noun? Carbonated or Carbonation? What do you think the big word "carbonation" has to do with soda?
The U.S.A is famous around the world for sodas---bubbly (carbonated) water with sweeteners and flavors added. Sodas are sold in cans and plastic and glass bottles. Soda, or pop as it is sometimes called in different parts of the USA, is not expensive to make at home.

First, you take a bottle of carbonated water or seltzer water. Then you add a flavor and sweetener of your choice. One popular flavor is vanilla which makes a "cream soda". A thick mixture of sweetener and flavoring called a "syrup" can be added to seltzer to make your own soda. Stir the syrup and seltzer well and remember to cap the bottle after you are done. This keeps the bubbles (carbonation) in the soda.
