    Hi m_rudky ,
"One theory suggests (that) play is training for a later life . "
The word "play" here is used as a noun + subject ... hence it's syntactically correct . I might be wrong, so, please feel free to enlighten me . I am here to learn . No sarcasm intended .
My understanding of this sentence is : by playing the kid/toddler is, unwittingly, training to cope with life , later on .
    Please advise .

    Hi Hung,
At first, I thought your sentence was wrong because
as I know, we often use the simple form in noun clause after expressions such as "suggest", "advise" ,etc...
    The rule is below:
Subject +the verb "suggest" +that + subject + verb in simple form...
The rule is applied in all of the cases which must include the idea of force or obligation.
For example: "I insist that he stay at home"
However, just to be sure, I checked the grammar textbook and it turns out that the verb" suggest" can be found from time to time
without the simple form in the noun clause.
The reason for not using the simple form is that the subject of the main clause is not exercising force on*****bject of the noun clause.
Let's look back at your sentence above:
"One theory suggests that play is training for a later life"
In the above sentence, the theory is simply giving an idea about the effect on the later life of a child.
It doesn't exercise any force onto the suject "play", so now I agree with you. Your sentence is fine.
    Regards,
    Rudky

    Doesn't make any sense .
"play be training for a later life" has to be a clause : Play is
    - life after death?
