Theirs was a conventional middle-class upbringing. (theirs) sounds kinda awkward but this is the only solution I could see.

I'm not sure if this works though. perhaps being well-informed and receiving a wide range/amount of information don't really mean the same.
4. The rate of inflation has fallen steadily during the recent months.
There has been a steady decline of the rate of inflation during the recent months.
5. They were on the point of cancelling the match when the opposition arrived. (call)
--> They were on the point of calling off the match when the opposition arrived. CORRECT
6. It's a waste of time to try and explain anything to Tony. (worth)
--> It's not worth trying to explain anything to Tony. CORRECT.

Never seen this structure before, but suppose it works. "Didnt use to" sure is correct, yet people can still use this kinda structure in less formal situations, mostly in conversations, just to make the speech somehow less complicated.
For example, there are two ways of understanding the sentence: I can not eat and still live, based on how one might say it.
If one say: I cannot eat and still live (meaning there's no stop between "can" and "not") it will be perceived that: one person has to eat *****rvive.
However, if one say: I can, not eat and still live (meaning, after saying "can" he stops and presses on "not") it will be perceived that: that one particular person does not have to eat *****rvive.
I don't know if I have made my points clear enough, but this is an interesting issue and I think it has most to do with the difference between written English and spoken English. Hope it helps.

This is correct in British English but unusual in American English. You can write "I didn't use to believe in UFOs, but now I know (that) they exist". There is no reason for disagreeing with your sentence or the teacher's sentence just because it isn't idiomatic in a particular dialect.
