Thank you for your valuable suggestions, Sil, imisim and nha-trang. It''''s absolutely useful to read your guidelines I will post the key here tomorrow as long as I have my test checked. Thanx again for your kindness
To Sil: You''''re right, sometimes it gets crazily competitve in this forum but it''''s fun also There were once a couple of big fights long time ago.
Oops, I forgot, still have a question. Can "in" be replaced by "as" in the term "as the last resort"? I''''ve just looked up the dictionary and it said it''''s OK to use both, I guess "as" is more formally used?

The posted suggestions are excellent, I''''m only adding a few extras for completeness'''' sake. My suggestions would be:
    1. He struck me as a highly efficient manager.
Drop the "being". It''''s not necessary at all.
    2. I took it for granted that you would ask for a reference.
    3. At first, the new computer put me in a little awe.
I think this sentence is more concise because it uses only one verb.
    5. You have an option to take early retirement?
I don''''t think the question mark has anything to do in this case, though.
    7. Women in this factory work in equal terms with men.
This expression (in/on equal terms with) is commonly used when referring to the equality between the ***es.
    Hope it''''ll be fine.
    On second thought:
However, the problem with quizzes like this is that you have many alternative ways of saying things. For example, you could as well have written like so:
    3. At first I (was / felt) (a little / a bit) in awe of the new computer.
    5. You have the/an option of (taking) early retirement.
    7. Women on this factory work on/under the same terms as men.

The keys may even be different. So Britney, I wish your teacher won''''t rely too much on the keys to give scores. English is very flexible.
BTW to me "as a last resort" sounds the most natural and common saying. But other versions are OK too.

Hey!!! I was so busy yesterday that I couldn''t find time to post anything here. Gotta give you the key right now! Oh Ly Trung Binh, if only you''re my English teacher , in my class (and in every English class in Vietnam generally speaking, we are required to be exact of every comma, let alone word I''m getting more and more fed up with this tedious and rigid subject!!!!
Guess what, I didn''t copy all of you suggestions and still keep some of mine. As the result, I got it almost correct
    1. He struck me as a highly efficient manager.
    2. I took it for granted that you would ask for a reference.
    3. At first, I was a bit in awe of the new computer
    4. Shouldn''t you cut down on your smoking/ amount of cigarettes?
    5. You have the option to take an early retirement (Thank you much LTB )
    6. I only called the police as a last resort.
    7. Woman in this factory work ON the same term with men.
I''m a little bit confused at this sentence. Why is it ON? The sentence give was "... work UNDER the same con***ions" so it must be UNDER here, right? Or is there any structure "on the same terms with sb?"
    8. However hard you try, you won''t succeed.
I got 6/8, not too bad, right
Thank you guys a lot. Itâ?Ts been a long time since I last received such perfect explanations.
So close no matter how far... I have you in my heart and nothing else matters... :x

    7. Woman in this factory work ON the same term with men.
work ON is ab. correct. just like on is used in "on the speaking terms with sb", so is it in "work...on the same, vv.... terms with sb".
Right decision, to be true to myself, and FOREVER HATE YOU!

He lived at (1) a thirty-five-cent phone call away, and (2.) I never called him. No one influenced (3) my life more than he had. Now he''s gone and I don''t think I ever told (4)him.
I worked late yesterday but (5) didn''t get hom until after (6) 8. We had a quick dinner and it was too late to start anything else, so at 10 I got into bed with the newspaper I''ve never taken the Times (7) to read. The economic news was bad and (9) the Giant''s coach said he wasn''t discouraged. I leafed through on (10) the obituary page and my eyes caught a little heading in boldface.
I dropped the paper in (11) the floor next to the bed and stared to (12) the ceiling. Mr. Hahn was dead. Why hadn''t I called him? I was surprised to finding (13) myself cried (14). I hadn''t really seen Mr. Hahn during (15) 40 years, didn''t even know (16) he was "Dr. Hahn" now, and I had thought of him as almost everyone of (17) the days of those 40 years.
    Reading:
Australia is to have a new shape by 2005. The tra***ional coastline is believed to be no longer suitable, according to J.L. Furness of Turramurra, NSW, and a new design competition should be launched to find a new one. A spokeperson for the "Inovation Board" confirmed that redesigning Autralia by 2005 was high on the authority''s agenda. The trouble with the existing coastline is that it is associated with the era of British discovery and settlement which we are trying to put behind us.
What is the unstated question raised in the opening papragraph???
Hic sao em doc mai chang thay cau hoi nao duoc an di vay???
