Espanyol swoop on Pacheco and Sousa

MADRID,(AFP) - Spanish side Espanyol have signed Inter Milan's Uruguayan international striker Antonio Pacheco and Portuguese midfielder Paulo Sousa.

Club spokesman Sergio Morgado said that subject to medical clearance they were negotiating an ad***ional season with Sousa, while Pacheco would return to his Italian club at the end of the season.


Sousa will fill the gap left by injured midfielder Toni Velamanzan.


The defensive midfielder has been without a club after terminating his contract with Greek side Panathinaikos last month.


The former Juventus, Inter Milan and Borussia Dortmund player is now desperate to start playing regularly again in order to seal his place in Portugal's World Cup squad.


Former Penarol player Pacheco, 25, joined Inter Milan in January 2001, but has not featured this season, and also badly needs match play to find a place in the Uruguayan line-up in Japan and South Korea this summer.
