More bombs from .... for Myanmar Myanmar is obtaining some 5,000 mortar bombs from .... in a follow-up to another order concluded earlier this year. The first of these deals that became known to Jane''''s Defence Weekly involved at least 50,000 rounds of 82mm smoothbore mortar ammunition worth some $2 million (JDW 21 March). The new contract centres on 5,000 60mm smoothbore mortar bombs valued around $150,000. Sources familiar with the trade say the former deal ultimately turned sour as a high proportion of the 82mm mortar bombs proved defective, and all were eventually returned to the manufacturer. The new contract may be at a test level to ensure quality. The shipments were arranged by international arms dealers and ..... may be unaware of the ammunition''''s ultimate destination. These same dealers arranged for Yangon to obtain at least 100 Igla 1-E (SA-16 ''''Gimlet'''') low-altitude surface-to-air missile systems under a previous deal (JDW 17 January).
