?oThe Asian girl they are so much prettier than the white onê? said I, looking toward the far end of the bar corner. This bar was decorated with modern deco. ?oThat?Ts why it named Decô? I talked to myself. I loved all the paintings they had here. They were all abstract works. The sense of stimulating nature reminded me about the view of a universe where the artists stood right at the central, I was not quite sure.
?oNo, I?Tm talking about the skin tone,? Howie interrupted me. He gave me thought about girls that came out from some kind of tan machine. Who started the idea of tanning anyway? It was so fake. If you were born looking like a whiteboard, then you should keep it that way.
?oNo but the Asian skin, its tan naturally, people prefer tan. C?Tmon man, don?Tt you know that,? I faced him expressing myself with an odd look. Man, I was fake. I knew it; I was trying to hold on to a conversation that I did not give ****.
?oHey, how about a radio show? Have you thought about that? We have a little statement on radio, we just talk about anything. We bull**** people. Dude, give me a say. What do you think? It may not work but here is a little spot. Wê?Tll start a radio show. Maybe, we talk about an hour in day time only. We just take callers; ask them ?owhat?Ts on your mind, wê?Tll talk about any thing. We just talk about anything.? Howie cut the conversation and jumped right into his new idea. The idea just seemed to pop up from nowhere into his head. This guy had no hair, with a big head full of beard. ?oThe Viet girl must think he is some kind of fat Hispanic guy,? I thought. He was ugly. I?Td better not tell him the truth.
?oYour idea is boring. I think it is stupid? I replied, expressing no interest. A radio show, I even could count words that I spoke daily. How could you expect me to start a radio show?
?oHuh, it?Ts boring, why? The radio show is boring? No, it?Ts not. When I drive I listen to the radiô? he said, leaning to grasp a better view of his favorite baseball player.
?oThat?Ts right. It?Ts because you drive. Have you sat in the radio show?? replied I, trying to get his attention back.
?oI think radio shows have bit demand? Howie continued.
?oAnd it is for the Vietnamese community here in Houston??
?oNope, let?Ts talk about the American. We find an American. We find a frequency and we are on the next minute. If there are a lot of ratings, which means the company makes money; we can be the 2 average guys all of a sudden getting rich. About the radio show, people can talk about anything. They may talk about their wives, football blahblahblah. It?Ts funny how people can talk about anything. It?Ts funny because we can sit there and make money so easily. Don?Tt you agree?? Howie sounded eagerly. It was hard to guess what was on his mind sometimes. He was a kind of guy that gave you painful surprise. He could make you talk about yourself all day, and then the next minute you realized he did not give **** about who you were, what was wrong with you? He did that and you could not understand. It just happened that way.
?oWhat? Sitting there and making money? Are you out of your mind? What make you think you are qualified?? I looked at him. He knew I was trying to figure out what his thought really was. Why all of a sudden he threw crap everywhere__
?oYep, all we need is a good voice. I have that. People don?Tt care how we look? Am I right? Hey listen, dude. You want ideas I through them out.?
?oI think it is so dumb? I said without looking at him.

?oYou write about how Asian people live, lives of immigrants and the second generation who grew up here . Actually that is the vision for our magazine, but you can do so with a book too. There are different communities of Asian immigrants here, but all they do is sticking up with their own groups. The Vietnamese play in Bellaire. They bring their habits back home to America. When they are free, what do they do? They go to Café, play pool or go gamble. You write a book to be a melting spot for all F.O.B; let?Ts introduce American life style to them. You gave them a new way to look at thing and let them decide whether they want to get into the society, whether they want to do what a typical American would do. You know what I mean?
?oI don?Tt want my book to be any melting spot. I want to tell the F.O.B to keep their heritages and to be proud with it. Why do we have to imitate White people?
?o Look, it isn?Tt about imitating the White. It?Ts about adjusting to the new culture. You want a better life, you come here. OK, what is the point of isolating yourself from the society? It?Ts all about lowing down the old culture that you are hold on to?
?oWhy do I have to abandon my own culture in order to merge to something that isn?Tt mine??
?oI didn?Tt tell you to abandon your culture. All I?Tm saying is to give yourself a chance to discover American life, to widen your view. It will benefit you!?
?oLike what? Going to a bar every weekend, going to club, watching football, eating Mcdonald?Ts___?
?oYeah, it?Ts a good way to start,? he laughed. ?o But my point is; life is always about enjoying what you are doing. You got to enjoy yourself because life is too short. The next day you open your eyes, probable all your energy has gone. You?Tll turn into an old man sooner then you notice. So, enjoy and enjoy. Do you get me? That?Ts American style. You go and tell all the F.O.Bs what I just said. We work hard and we play hard. We balance our lives.?
?oI think I?Tll go and tell them to seek their own identities. Sooner or later, people will accept us for who we are. I don?Tt want to be fake. I want to be myself, I?Tm a ****ing F.O.B. So what? What?Ts wrong with it? I hang out with you, crackers, blacks or whatever, I don?Tt have problem with that. But again, you have to be the real you in order for people to respect you.
?oAll I?Tm seeing now is you are limiting yourself. You always tell me you want to reach your full potential good .But, all I?Tm seeing now is you are actually afraid of changing. Only the most stupid people don?Tt change, everyone changes eventually. If you refuse be be part of the crowd, you?Tre dead.?
?oI?Tm part of the crowd, I?Tm learning to understand my crowd but at the same time, I keep my value. I don?Tt just turn my back to my culture. Who want to be whitewashed? Not me, it?Ts impossible to whitewash me.?
    ?oWho say anything about whitewashing??
?oYou did. I know you want to be white. That?Ts your wish?.
?oNo, I don?Tt. You ****ing asshole__?

?oNo, I don?Tt. You ****ing asshole__?
?oWrite about all the differences between you and me, ABA ( Asian Born American) and FOB( Fresh of the Boeing) ? What do you think??
?oThat?Ts right, or you may want to write about the stereotype?
    ?oWhat stereotype??
?oC?Tmon__ You know exactly what I?Tm talking about?
    ?oNope, I don?Tt?
?o The welfare sponges, the ching chong, the chink etc__ What was it like to be different? Does it ring any bell? I still remembered when I was a kid, I had a hard time dealing with my peers. The hopeless FOB who just did not seem to get American culture, the one who walked with his face down, who were afraid to speak in public. FOBs were born and came to be servants of this white society, FOB who lacked the gut to stand up and protect himself from the racial and ethnic discrimination by his peers. I want you to write about that kind of stereotypes. FOBs cleaned the toilets, served in restaurants, worked like dogs everyday with minimum wages. You were responsible for your self-image, your community and group image. You tell them that?
?oI?Tll tell them to stand up and slap on the face those who discriminated them.?
?oSo what does an ABA think about a FOB??
?oSome don?Tt want to hang out with FOB. I don?Tt hang out with FOB too?
?oSo why do you hang out with me??
?oBecause you are not like them?
    ?oWhy?
?o**** it, you know why, why ask??
?oAre you gay?? I laughed, ?oYou want *****ck my **** right now. The majority of American self-made millionaires are immigrants. You think about it. Without immigrants, there is no America.?
?oWithout America, there is no FOB,? he laughed.
?oMost people think they are superior over FOBs just because a FOB speaks English with an accent. Most of American is monolingual but they still make fun of FOBs anyway. Remember FOB speaks two languages, I?Tm glad you can speak Vietnamese. It?Ts good for you?
?oI lost a lot of knowledge about my culture?Ts background. It?Ts bad?
?oYou don?Tt have that knowledge to lose, seriously?
    ?oWhy did you say that??
?oYou never had it, you can?Tt say you lost something you didn?Tt have. C?Tmon, face the truth?
