A considerable part of warship fleets, specifically those which do not belong to the «top eight» navies, include ships with a full displacement of 500 to 2,300 t usually classified as corvettes. Ships in the upper part of this tonnage range are often called frigates. Demand for ships of this class has been continuously growing.

Corvettes are usually armed with 4 to 8 tactical antiship missiles (with a launch range of 80 to 130 km), a SAM system, one or two 76mm or 100mm guns, 20-40mm AA automatic guns, two three-tube 324mm torpedo launchers, one or two A/S mortars and a light ASW helicopter.
n view of existing demand, the Krylov institute has developed a new corvette design and is offering it to potential customers.
In this design, the institute used its experience in naval architecture gained in recent years, as well as the latest achievements in hydrodynamics, strength and structural materials, and naval stealth technologies. The corvette?Ts armament consists of well-proven Russian-made weapon systems authorized for export. However, concrete corvette versions can be configured to accommodate foreign-made armament and equipment.
The institute?Ts know-how implemented in this corvette design is represented by a new hull configuration, the efficiency of which was confirmed by comprehensive model tests.
The new hull?Ts underwater lines reduce water drag and, consequently, the required power of main machinery by approximately 25 percent at a speed of 30 knots (Figure 1). This provides for the use of less powerful and, consequently, lighter main machinery. As the ship?Ts displacement spared for any load also includes, beyond the load?Ts own mass, ad***ional masses of hull structures, general-purpose systems (depending on the volume of rooms occupied by this load), support systems, electric power supplies, etc., the above reduction in the main machinery?Ts mass of the new corvette saves 15 to 18 percent of tonnage for the deployment of weapon systems and ammunition, while the corvette?Ts own mass attributable to its armament and ammunition suites (depending on their versions) is increased by 25 to 30 percent (Figure 3). If the corvette?Ts design retains basic armament/ammunition and main machinery suites, the reduction in water drag, owing to the new hull configuration, can increase the corvette?Ts maximum speed by 1.5-2 knots.
The improved sea-going capability of the new corvette, compared to that of tra***ional designs of this class with similar pitch motion limitations, allows it to employ armament at rougher seas. This is especially important for a corvette carrying a light piloted helicopter (Figure 2). Basic characteristics of the corvette?Ts versions are presented in the table, and their general view is given in Figure 4. Figure 5 reproduces XXI-2, the most heavily armed version.
Versions XXI-1 and XXI-2 with a displacement of 2,000 t are powered by a CODAG main propulsion plant and armed with 24 universal launchers for the antiship and A/S missiles (such as Kalibr-NKE and Yakhont); one 100mm A-190 single-barrel gun, two 30mm AK-630M six-barrel automatic guns, and two 324mm torpedo quad launchers. Armament suites of these versions differ in the type of the fire control system and AD complex. The XXI-1 version is equipped with the Klinok short-range SAM system, while the XXI-2 version is armed with the Rif-M long-range multirole SAM system. Versions XXI-3 and XXI-4 with a displacement of approximately 1,500 and 1,000 correspondingly, are powered by a diesel propulsion plant and armed with two quad Uran antiship missile launchers, one 100mm A-190 single-barrel gun, one Kashtan close-in defense SAM system and two 324mm torpedo quad launchers. Versions XXI-1, XXI-2 and XXI-3 can accommodate a light helicopter weighing up to 6 t.
For the first time ever, corvettes with a displacement of approximately 2,000 t (versions XXI-1 and XXI-2) are armed with a high-precision missile system (Kalibr-NKE) designed to destroy ground targets at a long range.
Rif-M, a unique SAM system installed on the XXI-2 version, can not only provide air defense for the ship or a naval task force but also protect their area from solo-launched ballistic missiles.
To fight surface ships, the XXI-1 and XXI-2 versions are equipped with the Yakhont supersonic SAMs featuring a maximum firing range of 350 km which are virtually invulnerable to existing AD systems. These missiles are capable of destroying a medium-class ship by a single hit.
All corvette versions incorporate the latest advances in the reduction of ship?Ts signature in the upper and lower hemispheres and belong to the class of «stealthy» ships. This is achieved by their specific architecture and special coatings. The corvette?Ts missile armament is built in its hull. The ship features a monoblock superstructure made from composite materials with a high radar-absorbing ability, local protection of the hull?Ts individual elements, armament and service systems, which contribute essentially to the ship?Ts signature in the upper hemisphere. This reduces the ship?Ts average effective scattering area by over 60 percent. The homing probability of approaching antiship missiles decreases from 0.5 to 0.1 (Figure 6).
All the corvette variants are specially equipped to maintain combat and operational survivability. They are fire/explosion-proof and have structural protection from damage by enemy weapons.
The hull is made from steel. The monoblock superstructure and hull extensions and platforms are made from a polymer composite material which reduces displacement, improves fire/explosion protection and saves shipbuilders labor input and costs. The main machinery of the XXI-1 and XXI-2 versions includes a CODAG two-shaft propulsion plant comprising the 10D-49 diesel with a power of 5,200 hp (4,100 hp at combined mode) and a Russian or foreign-made gas turbine with a power of 27,700 to 29,000 hp, depending on a selected turbine type.
Corvettes with a displacement of about 1,000 and 1,500 t are powered by a two-shaft diesel propulsion plant comprising two Russian or foreign-made diesels (one per shaft) with a power of 5,000 or 10,000 hp, accelerating the ships to a maximum speed of 23 or 29 knots, respectively.
In terms of combat capability, the armament suite of the XXI-2 version significantly excels that of foreign-built 2,000 t-displacement corvettes. The fire power of a group of two to three XXI-2 corvettes is almost similar to that of a cruiser. The armament of XXI-1 version approximates that of destroyers or frigates.
The XXI-series 1,500 and 1,000 t -displacement corvettes are similar to their foreign counterparts but considerably outclass them in terms of speed and seagoing capability.
The Krylov Central Research Institute and its design bureau are ready to develop corvettes which will fully satisfy specific customer requirements, and to provide the developer?Ts oversight during their construction and operation.
