Informal language: is the kind of language that you use when you speak to your friends. It is relaxed and casual.
Formal language: is the kind of language that is used in more serious situations or in the workplace. It is correct standard English that does not use slang.
Sometimes you may use a form of language that does not fall neatly into either of these categories. For example, when you speak to your parents, you are probably not as informal as when you speak to your friends, however, you are probably not as formal as if you were speaking to your school principal. We can call it in-between
    Now wanna play a games?
Below are a number of similar compliments. However some are more formal than others. Drag them where you think they belong on the Formal to Informal Barometer.
    1. You look so good, blue really brings out your eyes.
    2. You look rad
    3. You look beautiful in that lovely dress. That shade of blue really brings your eyes out.
    4. Cool dress! It makes your eyes sparlk.
    5. I must complement you on your choice of frock. That color is most becoming.
Now match them with the followings.
    1. Very formal
    2. Slightly formal
    3. Neither
    4. Slightly informal
    5. Very informal
In the previous task, you arranged compliments in order of how formal they were. From the list below, decide who is most likely to have made each of the statements that appeared in the previous task.
    1. A teenage girl to her best friend.
    2. A wedding guest to the bridesmaid.
    3. A gentleman to his prime minister''s wife.
    4. A teenage boy to his girlfriend
    5. A mom to her lovely daughter.
    Have fun with this game.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmz it appears that no one dare answer my questions huh. Never mind, here''s the answer
    1. I must compliment you on your choice of frock. That colour is most becoming! It is pretty formal and must be said by a gentleman to his prime minister''s wife (Is it actually a flatter or a compliment??? )
    2. You look beautiful in that lovely dress. That shade of blue really suits you. It''s quite easy to realize this is a slightly formal sentence huh and a guest would be the most appropriate person to say it to the bridesmaid in her wedding
    3. You look so good. Blue really brings out your eyes. Oh we girls would recognize this is said by a mom without thinking for a second. So it''s neither informal nor formal, it''s in-between.
    4. Cool dress! It makes your eyes sparkle! Hey girls, have you ever heard this from your boyfriend??? You two are so close that it''d be a farce if you use formal language
    5. You look rad! This certainly comes from your best friend and it''s the most informal way to say you''re damn beautiful
So close no matter how far... I have you in my heart and nothing else matters... :x

    Have fun!
    Formal English
The English that you should use when writing a paper or thesis should be formal (like a legal document) but also clear (unlike a legal document). There are certain things that can be done in spoken English or in written English in newspapers, magazines, or lecture notes (or web pages like this) which are not appropriate for formal writing.

    Don''t start a sentence with `And'', `Also'', `But'', `So'', `Or'', `Even so''. Instead use `In ad***ion'', `However'', `Hence'', `Consequently'', `Alternatively'', `Nevertheless''.

Don''t start a sentence with `Therefore''. Instead write, for example, `We therefore...''.

Don''t start a sentence with `Then'' or `Now'' unless it is a command.

Don''t use `don''t'', or any other shortened negative such as `isn''t'', `hasn''t'', `wasn''t'', etc. Use `does not'', `is not'', etc. instead.

Generally try to avoid `''s''. E.g. Instead of `the wavefront''s curvature'' use either `the curvature of the wavefront'' or `the wavefront curvature''. There are exceptions to this. There are some cases where they are always used such as Laws e.g. `Bedford''s Law'', or where the alternative seems clumsy e.g. `today''s stock market prices'' is better than `the stock market prices of today''.

Don''t use `!'' or `&'' or `/''. It is also very unusual to see `?'' in a paper. Don''t put questions in a paper unless you really know what you are doing.

    Don''t use e.g. or i.e. or etc.

When referring to the number of countable objects, use words rather than figures when the amount is less than twenty. E.g. Don''t write ``we used 3 methods'''' - instead write ``we used three methods''''.

    Don''t use `OK''. Use `acceptably'', `permissible'', `satisfactory'', etc instead.

    Don''t use `got''. Instead use `obtained''.

If you can, try to use the passive voice for some of the time when describing your results. Using `we'' in every sentence is a bit boring.

List things properly using `and'' between the last two items. E.g. Don''t do `we used three methods A, B, C.'' Instead you should write either `we used three methods: A, B, and C.'' or `we used three methods, namely, A, B, and C.''

Use small letters for disciplines or theorems, e.g. mean-value theorem, `Unlike quantum mechanics and relativity, nonlinear science covers systems of every scale'' and not `Unlike Quantum Mechanics...''.

You cannot have a paragraph that is just one sentence.

    Thanks Britney
I visisted your room for fun for a whilst and all of a sudden came up with this topic. I came in to see what we were talking about and herein you quoted the URL that I had provided in the US room. Thanks for distributing this to others who have not been aware of these issues.
If one wishes to write formally such person should be trained how to write formally in school including but not limited to enroling to a subject where he or she is trained with formal English. There are various other ways but surely this is one of them.
In my school there is at least one subject that a student can enrol. This is called legal writing or advocacy training skill. It trains you not only to write formally but also to speak formally.
Another way is that you keep reading formal English writings (eg court cases) and follow such style(s). If you read them years and years and one day such formal styles will reside in your blood.

If only there were some kind of formal English writing course in Vietnam for me to enroll and acquire systematic instruction, maybe only that can help. I know reading a lot will ameliorate your reading as well as writing skill, yet I can barely apply those beautiful words and structures into my essay, perhaps I didnâ?Tt have the right method. Do you have any suggestions regarding how to read effectively and imitate the writerâ?Ts style, analyst?

This is such a briliant idea, hbae, I like it a lot. Sadly, my English isn?Tt formal enough to come up with any idea how to write the third sentences, still, writing in an informal way is not any easier. You really need to live in an English speaking environment to be able to use such colloquials, I guess. So bad I?Tm in the middle :((
