    Profile:
One of the best young footballers in the history of the sport, Ronaldo''s career has come to a crossroads. The young Brazilian captured the hearts and imagination of the world at a young age, but he has been slowed by injuries of late.

By the age of 17, Ronaldo was a name known throughout the world. His early antics with Cruzeiro, where he debuted at age 16, were good enough to land him a spot on Brazil''s 1994 FIFA World Cup USATM squad. Soon, Ronaldo headed in the footsteps of fellow legend Romario and joined Dutch side PSV Eindhoven. In two seasons, he scored 42 goals, despite playing in only 13 matches in 1995-96. He joined Barcelona in 1996 and scored 34 goals in his one season with the Spanish giants.

Ronaldo reached the apex of personal success by being named FIFA Player of the Year in both 1996 and 1997, becoming the youngest player to ever win the award and the only player to win it in consecutive years. At the age of 20, Ronaldo was on top of the world. The upcoming 1998 FIFA World Cup France brought high expectations from the masses as the public was anxious to see Ronaldo compete at the highest stage.

His future looked so bright, former England manager Bobby Robson had strong words to say about Ronaldo. ""He will become the best ever,"" Robson said.

The finals in France, though, did not turn out to be quite what the world expected. Ronaldo scored just one goal in the first round. In the second round, Ronaldo bagged a double against Chile. In the semi-finals, he scored Brazil''s lone goal against Holland, and the Selecao went on to win in a penalty-kick shootout.

Then came the final. At the biggest game on the biggest stage, Ronaldo faltered. Slowed by an illness, he missed his scoring chances and was forced to watch France celebrate their first championship.

Ronaldo''s disappointment in France was topped only by the disappointment of not watching Ronaldo play at all. He has suffered two serious knee injuries with Inter Milan that have limited his play since the 98 final.

    10 RIVALDO
    Birth Date: 19 April 1972
    Height: 186 cm
    Weight: 75 kg
    Position: MF
    Current Club: FC Barcelona (ESP)
    Int''l Goals: 28 (as of 27 May 2002)
    Int''l Caps: 59 (as of 27 May 2002)
    First Int''l Cap: Mexico (16 December 1993)

    Profile:
Like Pele and Ronaldo, Rivaldo had a modest upbringing, but unlike his illustrious fellow strikers, was not singled out for stardom early on in his career. After serving his apprenticeship at Paulista Recife, he signed his first professional contract with FC Santa Cruz in 1991, before moving to Mogi-Mirim, and then legendary Sao Paulo club Corinthians in 1993, where he hit the headlines by scoring 11 times in just 19 starts. Less than a year after joining Corinthians he was on the move again, this time to São Paulo rivals Palmeiras, where he won his first Brazilian championship in 1994.

Rivaldo took the well trodden path to Europe just after the Atlanta Olympic Games, joining Deportivo La Coruna, where he immediately stole the limelight, finding the back of the opposition''s net no less than 21 times in his first season.

One year later and he was packing his bags yet again, this time for FC Barcelona, who secured his services for the paltry sum of 24 million euros, as a replacement for Ronaldo, who had left in search of even greater fame and fortune in Italy. Rivaldo has since flourished into one of the best players in the world, as testified by the numerous awards he has picked up, including the Ballon d''Or, and the coveted FIFA World Footballer of the Year in 1999.

Things have not gone quite so smoothly for Rivaldo at international level, however. He made his debut way back in December 1993, but was desperately disappointed to miss out on selection to the Brazilian squad for the FIFA World Cup USA 94TM, and for the Copa America a year later.Rivaldo only returned to the Auriverde team at the Atlanta Olympic tournament in 1996, but this turned out to be a bitter experience as Brazil were dumped out of the competition in the semi-finals (1-3) by future Olympic champions Nigeria. Rivaldo, along with a few other players, was made something of a scapegoat for this defeat and had to wait until December 1997 for a recall to the Seleção.

He was unquestionably one of the stars of the FIFA World Cup France 1998TM. Even though Brazil lost ingloriously (0-3) to France in the final, Rivaldo was consistently brilliant, proving many of his detractors wrong, and was rightly named in the FIFA All-Star Team of the tournament.

Rivaldo is a fabulous player to watch. He is capable of doing things with a ball that most players can only dream about, combining faultless touch with an outstanding reading of the game. Yet he is something of a headache for coaches. He is often criticised for being selfish, preferring to furrow a lone path rather than take the easy team option. He is not renowned for his love of tackling back and finds it hard to fit into a specific tactical system. All of which does not prevent him from being one of the greatest players in the world today!.

    6 ROBERTO CARLOS
    Birth Date: 10 April 1973
    Height: 168 cm
    Weight: 70 kg
    Position: DF
    Current Club: Real Madrid (ESP)
    Int''l Goals: 6 (as of 27 May 2002)
    Int''l Caps: 85 (as of 27 May 2002)
    First Int''l Cap: USA (26 February 1992

    Profile:
Roberto Carlos is one of the biggest names in world football despite his relatively diminutive size. He has instituted a new style of play from the left-back position and has been a regular starter for four-time FIFA World CupTM champions Brazil and Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Roberto Carlos donned the yellow jersey for the first time in 1992 at the age of 18 in the Olympic Qualifying tournament. His quickness and playmaking ability in the back proved to be an instant asset to Brazil. However, Roberto Carlos was left off Brazil''s 1994 FIFA World Cup USA winning side.

After the tournament, Roberto Carlos made his stamp on the left side and became a first-choice starter. In 1995, his stock was rising, and he made the leap from Brazilian football to the European game. He joined Inter Milan from Palmeiras, but his stay was short-lived. English coach Roy Hodgson moved Roberto Carlos to the midfield, and he did not respond well.

In 1996, he moved to Real Madrid and back to his customary left-back position where he helped the Merengues win the 1996-97 La Liga Primera title and the 1997-98 UEFA Champions League.

Soon, his booming free kicks became legendary. In the Tournoi de France in 1997, Roberto Carlos nailed a free kick against the hosts that seemingly defied the rules of science. The 25-yard shot went around the right side of a wall of French defenders and appeared headed well wide of the net before the ball broke toward the goal and zipped past a baffled Fabien Barthez in net.

Roberto Carlos'' productivity has not slowed down. He started all seven games at the 1998 FIFA World Cup France as Brazil reached the final. He has helped Real Madrid capture multiple Spanish and European titles, and his abilities at both ends of the pitch will be key to Brazil''s success in the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan.

    Profile:
Brazilian fans were devastated when Luiz Felipe Scolari opted against reuniting the famous ""Ro-Ro"" duo, and left the controversial Romario at home. Auriverde supporters could soon, however, be consoling themselves with another legendary partnership - the ""Ronalds"", and the new black pearl Ronaldinho, top-class striker and dazzling dribbler, could well eclipse his older team-mate at the 2002 FIFA World CupTM Korea/Japan.
Talent runs in the de Assis Moreira family. Ronaldinho''s father was a footballer, his brother Roberto enjoyed long and successful career with Gremio Porto Alegre, and the youngster followed in their footsteps. Ronaldinho Gaucho burst onto the scene when he was crowned champion and top scorer at the FIFA U-17 World Championship in Egypt in 1997. At the Copa America in 1999 in Paraguay, he scored an unforgettable goal against Venezuela - lobbing one defender, dribbling past another as if he weren''t there and humiliating the keeper with a sublime finish, earning him numerous comparisons with the great Pelé. He certainly could not have hoped for a better first goal for the Seleçao.

He signed for Gremio in 1998, but left the club just two years later after his reputation had spread worldwide. He was on the wanted list of several European clubs, but it was Paris-Saint Germain who managed to secure his services. Although he landed in the French capital in the spring of 2001, it was August before he would play his first official match after a legal wrangle between his former club and his new employers over the small matter of several hundred million French Francs. Ronaldinho made a slow start to his PSG career but soon became one of the stars of the team. His dribbling and free-kicks are the class of the French championship and he went on to score nine league goals, his incisive performances earning him a place in the Seleçao.

When he twice finished top-scorer, in the 2000 FIFA Confederations Cup (with six goals) and in qualifying for the Olympic Games in Sydney (nine goals), Ronaldinho began to eclipse his idol Romario, culminating in Scolari abandoning the veteran for the precocious youngster. ""I''ve known him since he was 14,"" admitted Romario. ""He followed me when I was at Gremio and in the youth teams. It''s easier for me to play for the Seleçao. We know each other as well on the pitch as off it.""

The Gremio prodigy has asserted himself more and more with each appearance, becoming almost indispensable to Scolari''s plans. His alertness and daring have revived a Brazilian attack practically moribund since the injury to Ronaldo.

The versatile Ronaldinho is as comfortable wearing the number 10 shirt as he his leading the attack, but with Ronaldo back in business, a partnership between the two could be devastating. Each blessed with exceptional pace, incredible dribbling and finishing that most players can only dream of, the two Brazilian strikers believe their time has come. ""I prefer to play with Ronaldo, because I know him best,"" the darling of the shanty towns recently admitted, before going on to underline his faith in his own ability. ""I think I''m good enough to play every match. But I still have to prove myself both in training and at match level ¿""
