New Delhi : After the fatal crash in which one pilot was killed, the entire fleet of India?Ts most advanced fighter jet, the Su 30 MKI, remained on the ground for the second consecutive day while IAF technicians carried out checks on the aircraft.
A senior officer said that while the reliability of the aircraft is not in question, the fighters did not fly on Friday as ?oprecautionary checks? are being carried out to rule out any fault. Confirming that no flights took place at Pune or Bareilly, the two airfields where the fighters are based, the officer said that fighters will stay on the ground till the IAF is fully satisfied that they are fit to fly.
As first reported by this newspaper, the fleet was grounded immediately after Thursday morning?Ts crash near the Pokharan firing ranges in which one pilot, Wing Commander P S Nara, was killed while the other survived.
While a detailed court of inquiry has been ordered into the accident, the first ever for the MKI version of the Su 30 that was inducted in 2002, fresh details have emerged about the crash that practically rule out pilot error.
Sources familiar with the investigation say that the fighter, which was flying as part of a four-aircraft group at over 20,000 feet, went into an involuntary ?~bunting?T manoeuver that tossed it around at an angle of 270 degrees.
Following the violent manoeuver, the fighter plummeted to the earth in an uncontrollable spin and did not respond to controls, forcing the two pilots to eject. An official said that this could point to either a technical fault or some sort of structural damage to the fighter.
However, IAF officers are confident that the fighter will take to the skies soon after the inspection checks are carried out. ?oThe Su 30 MKI is one of the most reliable fighters we have. It has had a great safety record but accidents happen. Even the most advanced American F 22 Raptor has suffered two crashes,? a senior officer said.

Nga và Ấn Độ đã xong Brahmó cho Su-30MKI rồi -2 chiếc được đưa sang Nga để cải tiến dùng Brahmos.
India, Russia to discuss roadmap for air-launched version of BrahMos news

New Delhi: India is moving ahead with its plans to equip its frontline air superiority fighter, the Sukhoi-30MKI with the air launched version of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. According to agency reports, both India and Russia will be holding talks by the end of the month to discuss the issue.
India has already dispatched two of these heavyweight Su-30 MKI fighters to Russia for modification of the aircraft''s fuselage so that they will be able Sukhoi 30MKI to carry the modified, air-launched version of the BrahMos.
The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile is joint Indo-Russian development.
Reports quote unidentified ministry of defence officials as saying that the modification work on the aircraft is expected to be complete by early 2010, though no deadlines have been set.
The aerial version of the BrahMos will be shorter in length than the standard land or marine versions and will have the capability to auto-launch towards the target after being released from the aircraft by the pilot.
Once the air-launched version has been fully developed the BrahMos will become the only cruise missile in the world to operate in land, sea and air versions. It has already been inducted by the Army and the Navy.
The conventional BrahMos has a range of 290 km and carries a 300 kg conventional warhead at a speed of around 2.8 Mach.
Meanwhile, Indian Air Force and Sukhoi experts are jointly investigating an April 30 crash of a Su030MKI fighter which resulted in the death of a crew member. The fighter, part of a group of four, was returning to base after a routine training sortie when it went into an uncontrollable spin.
The crash is the aircraft''s first since its induction in 2002.

U.S. buys Su-27 fighters from Ukraine for ''aggressor'' training
12/05/2009 15:43 MOSCOW, May 12 (RIA Novosti) - The United States has bought two Su-27 Flanker fighter jets to help train U.S. pilots to cope with the growing number of Russian 4th-generation aircraft sold around the globe, a U.S. online magazine said.
The two planes have been bought from a private Ukrainian company by the Reno-based Tac Air, which provides training and test support for the military.
The aircraft will also be used to test the effectiveness of new U.S. radars and electronic warfare equipment, the Strategy Page reported.
The 33-ton Su-27 is similar to the U.S. F-15, but costs some 30% less, the source said.
Su-27 fighters have been produced in Russia since 1982. They are still widely used in the Russian Air Force and are gradually undergoing maintenance repairs to extend their service life.
The Su-27 Flanker and its variant, the Su-30 Flanker C, account for a major share of Russia''s arms exports. In the past, Russia''s Sukhoi aircraft maker sold Su-27 and Su-30 fighters to China, India, Malaysia, Venezuela and Algeria.
In 2007, Sukhoi exported 50 of these aircraft, accounting for 50% of Rosoboronexport''s export revenues.
According to U.S. sources, the two aircraft, which have been acquired in a commercial variant, stripped of weaponry, are being overhauled and modified by the U.S. Pride Air company.
