    HA GIANG
Located on the banks of the Lo River just south of its confluence with the Mien River. The provincial capital of Ha Giang nestles picturesquely between the two large limestone outcrops known as the Cam and Mo Neo mountains.
Archaeological evidence of early Australoid settlement dating back some 30,000 years was unearthed during the 1980s at Doi Thong (Pine Hill), close to Ha Giang?Ts main market. However, the most important flowering of ancient culture in the region took place after 5,000 BC; Stone Age hunting tools found recently in the Provincê?Ts Na Chao District suggest that the ancient Hoa Binh civilization actually extended much further north than was previously thought. By the start of the Bronze Age, the region was populated largely by the Tay Vu tribe, vassals of the Hung Kings of Van Lang (Viet Tri) whose power base is thought to have been the Dong Van ?" Meo Vac region. Dong Son brose drums and other artifacts found in that area testify to the presence of a high material culture involving settled agriculture, domestication of livestock and animistic religious beliefs. It is probably no coincidence that the tra***ion of making bronze drums for ceremonial purposes continues even to this day amongst the Lo Lo and Pu Peo ethnic minority communities of northern Ha Giang Province.
With its current population of around 536,000, Ha Giang Province is the northernmost Province of Vietnam, covering a total land area of 7,831 square kilometers and sharing a 274 ?" kilometers border with China. A national border crossing is located at Thanh Thuy and there are also local border crossings at Pho Bang, Xin Man and Sam Pun, although foreigners are not as yet authorized to cross into China from any of these points.
We rememberAll the times weHad togetherAnd as our lives changeCome whateverWe will still beFriends Forever

    Ha Giang Museum
Yen Bien Bridge, Ha Giang Town
    (service of Culture and Information)
At the time of writing, Ha Giang Museum is temporarily located in an old wooden building in the grounds of the new library, on the west side of Yen Bien Bridge. Unfortunately, most of the Museum?Ts extensive collection of archaeological, historical and ethnological artifacts is currently in store pending the construction of a new museum, but those on display here are well-worth viewing.
NB: In order to visit the Museum (which is normally kept locked) prior permission must be obtained from the service of Culture and Information a few days before the date of your arrival in Ha Giang .
    Ha Giang market
    Tran Phu, Ha Giang Town
Ha Giang market is located close to the east bank of the Lo River in the old quarter of the town. It is a daily market, although it is busiest on Sundays. Whilst it is frequented mainly by Vietnamese people, Tay, Nung and Red Dao are often in evidence, as are members of northern Ha Giang Provincê?Ts prolific White H?Tmong ethnic minority.
    Pine Hill
    Tran Phu, Ha Giang Town
Pine Hill is located behind Ha Giang market. The eponymous pine trees were in fact planted very recently to landscape the area, but excavations have revealed the hill itself to be an area of ancient human settlement which may date back some 30,000 years to the Son Vi period. The late Mr. Truong Viet Thang, whose house lies at the foot of the hill, discovered many ancient axe-heads and other weapons whilst reclaiming land to the west of the hill in the years after 1989; these may now be seen in the local museum and in the History Museum in Hanoi. Mr. Thang subsequently coauthored several academic papers on the subject before his death a few years ago. His widow still lives at the foot of the hill and is always pleased to show visitors the site and sell them a bunch of flowers from her garden.
    Fairy stream
Quan Ba road, 1.5 kilometers from Ha Giang Town.
Just 1.5 kilometers out of Ha Giang to the left of the road to Quan Ba Lies Suoi Tien or Fairy Stream, at present just a pleasant picnic area next to a stream but currently earmarked by the provincial government for development as a small recreation area. To get there, cross the Lo River and then continue on until you reach a small road bridge marked Cau so 2 (Bridge No 2). Access *****oi Tien may be gained by climbing the path on the left-hand side of the road immediately after this bridge. Please note that the stream is at its best during the rainy season.
    Dong Van ?" Meo Vac
Heading north west out of Ha Giang along National Road 4C takes travelers to the remote region of Dong Van ?" Meo Vac, located at the northernmost tip of Vietnam, close to the Chinese border and just 30 kilometers south of the Tropic of Cancer. The primary tourist attraction of the area is the former H?Tmong royal house at Sa Phin, 16 kilometers before Dong Van, but the colorful costumes of the ethnic people and the majestic mountainous scenery en route make this long and bumpy journey more than worthwhile.
The trip to the Dong Van ?" Meo Vac region can be made as either a two or a three ?" day excursion out of Ha Giang to Meo Vac via Yen Minh and Dong Van involves a distance of some 170 kilometers; on the return journey from Meo Vac to Ha Giang travelers can by-pass Dong Van, heading straight from Meo Vac to Yen Minh via Highways 176 and 180 thereby reducing the overall distance by 22 km.
North of Ha Giang the roads are in very poor con***ion and at times the going can be very hard indeed. At the time of going to press it takes some 9 hours to travel from Ha Giang to Dong Van, including a lunch stop at Yen Minh and an one-hour visit to the former H?Tmong royal hours at Sa Phin. After an overnight stop in Dong Van, travelers can continue on the next morning to Meo Vac, a further 22 kilometers taking approximately 1¼ hours, before returning via Yen Minh to Ha Giang, a journey of around 8 hours including a lunch stoop travelers may wish to add an ad***ional night?Ts stop-over in either Dong Van or Meo Vac, making for a total three-day excursion from Ha Giang. However, it should be noted that since both Dong Van and Meo Vac are located very close to the Chinese border in a remote mountainous area, hill-walking by foreigners around both towns is strictly forbidden, making the number of things for visitors to do in Dong Van and Meo Vac rather limited.
NB: all foreign visitors are required to obtain a special permit before proceeding beyond Ha Giang into the Dong Van ?" Meo Vac area. This can be arranged either directly from the local police or through the Ha Giang Tourist Company, which charges a fee of D150,000 per person for this service.
    Dong Van
From Sa Phin to the market town of Dong Van is a journey of just 16 kilometers taking around 30 minutes. On this stretch of the journey the road passes through some stunning mountain scenery before descending into the Dong Van valley, an area populated mainly by Tay people .
Dong Van?Ts small main street includes a number of two-storey houses of architectural note, but there is not much else for the visitor to do here.
The town?Ts Sunday market attracts many different ethnic minorities but it is very quiet at other times of the week. Since Dong Van is just three kilometers from the Chinese border foreigners are not permitted to walk around the surrounding hills or visit neighboring villages.

Meo Vac village of the Lo Lo ethnicity

As in Dong Van, there are a number of Quan Com Pho (rice and noodle shops) in and around the main market area.
Meo Vac ?" Yen Minh direct
When making the return journey to Ha Giang travelers should take the direct rout across the mountains from Meo Vac to Yen Minh along Highways 176 and 180, by-passing Dong Van.
    Vinh Tuy
National Road 2 crosses into Ha Giang Province 67 kilometers north of Tuyen Quang before arriving at the small town of Vinh Tuy, located either side of a bridge which spans a tributary of the Lo River. On money days boats may be seen here dredging for gold.
From Vinh Tuy northwards travelers may catch sight of several other ethnic minority groups settled in the area, including the Nung, the Flower H?Tmong and two further Dao sub-group, the Red Dao and The Dao Ao Dai (Long-dressed Dao).
    Hung An
Hung An, 81km north of Tuyen Quang and 72 kilometers south of Ha Giang, lies at the center of another important tea-producing region. Every morning at its daily marker, many ethnic people, including Tay, Nung, Red Dao, Dao Ao Dai, Flower H?Tmong and also Pà Then and La Chi peoples may be observed going about their daily business.
    Bac Quang
Bac Quang is an important market town located some 60 kilometers before Ha Giang at the junction with Highway 279, which leads west through the mountains to Bao Yen in Lao Cai Province. Unfortunately, this road is impassable to motorized transport at the time of writing. The busy daily market at Bac Quang is well worth a visit:
    Bac Quang Market
    Bac Quang Township, Ha Giang
Although frequented mainly by Vietnamese people, Bac Quang Market also sees a regular throughput of the region?Ts ethnic people, in ad***ion to Nung, Flower H?Tmong, Red Dao and Dao Ao Dai, visitors may also see people of the La Chi and Pa Then minorities .
Before leaving Bac Quang travelers may wish to visit a nearby village of the Pa Then ethnic minority, located just 7 kilometers
Ma Thiong of the Pa Then ethnicity
7 kilometers from Bac Quang Township, Ha Giang
this village is located next to the road near a bridge. Many of its older people still wear the colorful tra***ional Pa Then costume.
    Tan Quang
Some 48 kilometers south of Ha Giang Highway 2 travels through the town of Tan Quang. Just north of this town lies the junction with Highway 177, which winds its way westwards through Hoang Su Phi eventually arriving in Bac Ha, Lao Cai Province. For most of its 140-kilometers distance, this road is impassable to motorized transport, although there are plans to upgrade it within the near future.
Hoang Su Phi, some 64 kilometers west of the Tan Quang road junction, is an area of considerable interest from the point of view of ethnic minorities, and many of its inhabitants regularly pass through Tan Quang en route to market. At Tan Quang, in ad***ion to Nung, Flower H?Tmong, Red Dao, Dao Ao Dai, La Chi and Pa Then people, travelers may also catch sight of members of the Co Lao ethnic minority who are settled in Hoang Su Phi District.
    Viet Lam
Viet Lam, 30 kilometers south of Ha Giang, is one of the key areas involved in the production of Ha Giang Provincê?Ts famous ?~Shan Tuyet?T green tea. There are a number of Nung sub ethnicity by visiting the town?Ts small market.
    Vi Xuyen
Vi Xuyen, 21 kilometers south of Ha Giang, is an ancient settlement which pre-dates the modern provincial capital.
Some 12 kilometers north of this town lies the Sung Khanh Pagoda, perched on a hill 200 mountains to the west side of the road next to the Nung village of the Nung ethnic minority.
    Sung Khanh Pagoda
Nung Village, Vi Xuyen District, 9 kilometers from Ha Giang Town, Ha Giang .
Sung Khanh Pagoda was constructed in 1705 by Nguyen Van Tran, Lord of Phuong Do, with the support of a large number of other notables of the region. The original wooden building was destroyed long ago and the present concrete one dates from 1989. However, the real interest of the pagoda is its beautiful bronze bell which dates from 1705 and, according to the lengthy hand-written information sheet inside the pagoda, took 12 cauldrons of molten bronze to cast and was famed throughout the land for the excellence of its sound when struck.
    Minh Tan
Some 24 kilometers north of Ha Giang lies the village of Minh Tan. Its small market is held every six days and always sees a regular throughput of White H?Tmong and Red Dao people .
    Quan Ba
Some 45 kilometers from Ha Giang the road climb up the Quan Ba Pass to "Heaven?Ts Gate" ?" a TV transmitter mast marks the summit ?" which commands a superb view of the Quan Ba valley and the strangely uniform row of hills on the other side. After descending into the valley, those making this trip on a Sunday morning can stop at the weekly market.
    Quan Ba market
Quan Ba, 45 kilometers from Ha Giang

One of the largest Sunday markets in the region which attracts not only White H?Tmong, Red Dao, Dao Ao Dai and Tay people but also members of the Bo Y ethnic minority who live in the mountains around the town.
Kan Ty Village of the White H?Tmong ethnicity
Quan Ba, 61 kilometers from Ha Giang

There are a number of large White H?Tmong settlements in this area, but Kan Ty Village is one of the most convenient places for travelers to stop and meet the white H?Tmong people, who form the largest single ethnic group in Ha Giang Provincê?Ts four northernmost District of Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac .
    Yen Minh
Located some 98 kilometers north west Ha Giang, the Town of makes for an excellent lunch stop on the way to Dong Van and Meo Vac and should also be considered as a possible overnight stop for those planning to spend a little longer in the region. Like Quan Ba, Yen Minh also has a busy Sunday morning Market.
    Around Yen Minh
    Yen Minh Market
Yen Minh, 98 kilometers from Ha Giang

Located just off the main street in the center of town, Yen Minh Sunday market sees not only White H?Tmong, Tay and Dao Ao Dai people but also other ethnic groups including Giay, Pu Peo, co Lao, Lo Lo and the local branch of Red Dao.
    Accommodation in Yen Minh
    Peoplê?Ts committee Guest House
Yen Minh, 98 kilometers from Ha Giang
4 three-bed rooms total with outside shared shower/toilet
    Basic accommodation, no Restaurant .
    Eating out in Yen Minh
    Minh Hai Restaurant
Yen Minh, 98 kilometers from Ha Giang

Locate just off the main street on the way to the market.
    Lang Si
Just 4 kilometers beyond Yen Minh, travelers will arrive at the junction with Highway 180, the road which cuts directly across the mountains to Meo Vac, by- passing Dong Van ; to save time the return journey from Meo Vac can be made by way of this road.
For mow though, travelers should head northwards along Highway 4C, which ascends the beautiful Lang Si Pass between 116 and 119 kilometers from Ha Giang. This is an important honey-producing area and apiaries may be seen on every hill.
Close to the summit lies the White H?Tmong village of Lang Si, where an ethnic minority market involving mainly local White H?Tmong people is held every six days.
As the road reaches the summit, travelers will see remnants of the border wall constructed by the French during the 1890s to defend against incursions by the White H?Tmong of Dong Van ?" Meo Vac. beyond this wall once lay the ancestral demesne of the White H?Tmong.
    Sa Phin
Ascending into the next valley, travelers will immediately be struck by the distinctive architecture of the White H?Tmong houses of this area Unlike the single- story wooden huts characteristic of H?Tmong settlements elsewhere in northern Vietnam, these are two ?" story structures with tiled roofs and walls made with clay bricks. However, this style of architecture is not confined to the H?Tmong ethnicity ?" the houses of other ethnic minorities of this region, such as the Co Lao and the Pu Peo, are of similar design, no doubt a result of their having lived for generations in close proximity to the H?Tmong.
The physical geography of this area is also unique ?" the soaring mountains on either side of the road between Lang Si and Dong Van are literally covered in an extraordinary carpet of jagged rock, leaving very little land suitable for cultivation purposes.
Continues some 10 kilometers further along highway 4C, travelers will enter the remote Sa Phin valley, just 2 kilometers from the Chinese border. As the road circumnavigates the valley, travelers will see below them the village of Sa Phin, a small White H?Tmong settlement of no more than 20 building, and at their center the twin white towers of the H?Tmong royal house.
    The Vuong Palace
Sa Phin, Dong Van District, Ha Giang
Built to face south in accordance with the geomantic principles governing the construction of north east Asian stately houses, the Vuong residence comprises four two-storey sections linked by three courtyards. Both the outer and cross-sectional walls of the building are made of brick, but within that basic framework wood is the principal construction material used. Architecturally, the house has much in common with late 19th-century southern Chinese townhouses, including its classic mui luyen or Yin-yang tiled roof. The boiling is surrounded by a moat and a 2-meter high outer wall. Ornately-carved tombstones of members of the Vuong family may be seen outside the main gate.
NB: the house of the former H?Tmong king lies in a restricted border area and travelers should report to the office of the local Peoplê?Ts Committee in the Vuong Palace. Before visiting the house. Photography outside the building is strictly forbidden; inside the boiling photography is permitted, but visitors should ask permission first.
    Lung Phin
The town of Meo Vac, 16 kilometers from Meo Vac and 34 kilometers before Yen Minh, is another important center of Shan Tuyet tea production. Lung Phin also hosts one of the biggest and most colorful Sunday markets in the region
    Lung Phin maket
Lung Phin, Dong Van District, Ha Giang

as usual in this area, White H?Tmong people are in the ascendancy at Lung Phin Sunday market, but there are also a number of other ethnic groups in evidence, including Red Dao, Pu Peo and another highly-colorful branch of the Dao family known as the Dao Tam Dao Pan.
