1 PhD position in Distributed Systems and Software Engineering (Service Composition & Monitoring)

(Research fellowships for foreign citizens) Institute of Mathematics and Computing Science University of Groningen (RUG), The Netherlands

    Organization

The Software Oriented Systems (SOS) group at the University of Groningen is a growing group focusing on the exploitation of all the possibilities offered by Service-Oriented Computing by performing outstanding research in the areas of distributed systems and artificial intelligence, both from the theoretical and the practical perspectives. The group, led by Marco Aiello, is synergetic with the distributed systems and software engineering research group within the same institute (http://search.cs.rug.nl [You are leaving the RUG site] ).

    Topic of research

    Area: Service Composition & Monitoring

Interaction with web services enabled marketplaces would be greatly facilitated if users were given a high level service request language to express their goals in complex business domains. This can be achieved by using a planning framework which monitors the execution of goals against predefined standard business processes (e.g. BPEL processes). In this context, the project consist of studying methodologies and techniques for achieving service composition and monitoring. The project will rely on the experimental platform built in the context of the project SOCeX (see below).

    Requirements:

    - You should have a M.Sc. or equivalent in computer science or a related discipline.

    - You are expected to have an excellent academic record (list of examination marks from your university degree) and be curious, creative and ambitious.

    - You should be able to write scientific articles and reports (proven by your graduation thesis or another comparable report) and be fluent in English.

    - Knowledge in distributed systems, Web services, or Constraint satisfaction is considered a plus.

    Con***ions of employment

The University of Groningen offers outstanding candidates a Ph.D. fellowship and an accompanying scholarship. The fellowship is for a period of four years which should result in the Ph.D. defense of the candidate. The scholarship starts from about õ,ơ 1390 euros (the candidate has to take care for tax - about 3% - and health insurance) per month in the first year and will be adjusted to general price movements once a year. After one year, the performance of the candidate will be evaluated to decide whether there is sufficient progress to expect a successful completion of the Ph.D. thesis within the remaining three years.

A training program is part of the agreement *****pport the Ph.D. candidates in their professional and personal development as well as their career planning. You and your supervisor will make up a plan for the ad***ional education and supervising that you specifically need. The University of Groningen strives to offer an inspiring environment for research providing generous technical and financial support in order to motivate young researchers. The positions are immediately available and applications should be sent by March 31st, 2007. The positions will remain open until suitable candidates are found.

    Information and application

Applications for the position should include a Curriculum Vitae (name, address, degree(s), date, etc.) and the names and (email) addresses of at least two references. Please send your application indicating the code of the position(s) you apply for to Marco Aiello - Tel: +31 50 3633948 -E-mail: aiellom@cs.rug.nl - Web: http://www.cs.rug.nl/~aiellom

    Topic of research

    Area: Service eXperimental Platforms

Service-Oriented Computing (SOC) is establishing itself as the paradigm for building loosely coupled, massively distributed software applications. As we are leaving the early days of SOC, we need to evaluate the proposals experimentally and to show that the approaches are feasible. For this, we need to have common benchmarks to access the key characteristics of approaches to composition, to Quality of Services and key issues in Service-Oriented Architectures. In this project, you will define benchmarks and platforms for the evaluation of service-oriented architectures, you will perform and evaluate existing systems experimentally and, eventually, propose new improved systems for service composition, for Service-Level agreement negotiation and monitoring, or for related problems.

    - Ability and desire to design, implement and manage information systems is a strong plus.

    - Knowledge in Distributed systems, Web services, or statistics is considered a plus .
