***UAL ORIENTATION

***ual orientation is a collection of human attraction to others. It consists of emotions, romance, ***uality, or even combinations of these. According to the majority of researchers, ***ual orientation is theoretically divided into hetero***uality, homo***uality and bi***uality.
Hetero***uality is romantic or ***ual attraction between people of opposite ***. In casual terms, hetero***uality is called “straight”. Homo***uality is romantic or ***ual attraction between people of the same ***. We usually call homo***ual people “gay” or “lesbian”. Bi***uality is romantic or ***ual attraction toward both males and females. However, according to other researchers, another category of ***ual orientation is a***uality, which indicates the lack of ***ual attraction or the lack of interest in ***.

Nowadays, scientists have not determined exactly the cause of a particular ***ual orientation in adolescence. However, many believe that both nature and nurture contribute to the formation of ***ual orientations and therefore most people have little or no choice for their ***ual orientation.
In the past, homo***uality and bi***uality were considered immoral and even categorized as mental disorder or illness. Some homo***ual and bi***ual people had to live with a person of the opposite *** to hide their real ***ual orientation while others had to struggle with prejudices and discriminations of society for their entire lives. Nevertheless, most scientists today agree that homo***uality and bi***uality are normal phenomena in nature and human society. They found out that homo***uality and bi***uality occur in most animals and have nothing to do with mental disorder or illness.
To conclude, it is obvious that no one was born to be strange; and no matter what your ***ual orientation is, you deserve full rights of living, loving like others on the Earth.

1- Have you ever heard about the term “***ual orientation”? What is your ***ual orientation, honestly?
2- Do you know anyone whose ***ual orientation differs from yours? Do you think he/she is normal or abnormal?
3- There is a point of view that homo***uality and bi***uality are contrary to natural evolution. What is your opinion about that?
4- Do you agree or disagree with the necessity of acknowledging full human rights for homo***ual and bi***ual people? Explain.

Every year, in Vietnam, there are thousands of high school students taking part in entrance examination on purpose of entering dreaming university. BLACK DAY – A TOPIC FOR FA
Black Day (April 14) is a South Korean informal tra***ion for single people to get together and eat jajangmyeon (noodles with black bean sauce). The idea is that those who did not give or receive gifts on Valentine's Day (February 14) or White Day (March 14) can get together and eat jajangmyeon, white Korean noodles with black bean sauce, to celebrate their single life.
At universities across the country on Black Day, students without lunch dates ordered black noodles, dined with other lonely hearts and searched for companionship. South Korea marketers have hatched special days for the 14th of each month to create a calendar laden with love.Black Day events have snowballed, with a major matchmaking service this year providing an evening of speed dating where the dish of choice is sushi blackened by squid ink. An on-line company for movie tickets sponsored a speed eating competition of black noodles for those who bought single tickets for the latest films.
Questions:
1. How long have you been an FA (Forever Alone)? How do you feel?
2. What is a typical day/week of an FA? Have you ever thought that it is negative to not have a partner?
3. Share your own reasons why you are still an FA?
4. Single life’s rate is on the rise all over the world, due to numerous advantages. Do you concur with this trend?

BEAUTY IS A SIN

On the occasion that three Saudi Arabia men were forced out of a festival due to their terrific handsomeness, it promptly raises a question of whether beauty is a sin or not.As the matter of fact, beauty was sometimes interpreted into negativity in the past as attractive women were thought to effortlessly seduce and steal your husband afterwards. It is understandable that one way or another, those attractive received estrangement from society and had a more challenging life than others. Vietnamese literature once takes Thuy Kieu as an outstanding example of “beauty being misery”. In western culture, the topic of “beauty is a sin” is also appealingly observed. Fantine in the novel Les Miserable was discriminated by other co-employees just because of her shining beauty.
In reality, attractive human beings are more vulnerable to ***ual assaults, regardless of their genders. When it comes to inequity-gender countries, such as India, where men are much more privileged than their counterparts, this problem becomes more serious. It is ironic that some parents even wish their children were less beautiful, thus, they will be less in danger. One the other hand, in terms of arts, beautiful people are often thought to be unable to sing or act. Some even try their best to prove their talents but actually it is difficult to overcome this prejudice.
Questions:
1.Have you ever wanted to be more beautiful/ handsome? If yes, have you ever thought of using plastic surgery to improve your beauty?
2.For parents’ perception, have you ever thought that it would be easier to bring up less beautiful children?
3. Do you want to be an attractive person or just a normal one? Why?
4.On the occasion of three hot Saudi Arabia dudes, it is witnessed that a bomb of comments, coming from Vietnam IP address, is thrown onto their facebook. What do you
think about this? People are afraid that problems might be caused in Vietnam since this country’s residents are too frantic to handsomeness. Is it true? What problems can come
from this phenomenon?

WHAT MAKES US BEAUTIFUL?

Always being attractive and beautiful is one of the hottest women’s desires of all time and the awareness for being beautiful stays in their hearts. However, there are many methods for girls to choose. For example, in China for long time ago, there was a trend which made women’s feet smaller through casting feet into small shape and bunched them for even a year for Chinese girls to have small enough feet to fit with the shoes called “Got Sen”. That was one of the most painful methods I have ever heard. Otherwise, nowadays, there are also a thousand of interesting and crazy ways being used by women who they think can make them more attractive and ***y.
“Have you ever heard that beating to the face of girls leading to her youth last longer?Have you ever heard that using your own blood for your face will create the beautiful skin?”
In my point of view, those are some of craziest way ever I have ever heard, not too much painful, but they extremely need your endurance.
Let’s share with us your opinion about this burning situation.
1. Do you know any ways making man or women more beautiful? (Even they are crazy and strange methods). Can you share with us?
2. After listening about such strange methods to create beauty, could you please share your point of view about that? Do you want to be more beautiful like that?
3. What do your require for the girl/boy’s beauty? Are strange methods accepted by you when it comes to your partner’s beauty desire?
4. There is a quote that if you are confident, you are beautiful. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this?

CERTIFICATE OR KNOWLEDGE

It is known that we go to school for knowledge, and certificate is recognition of our studying that awarded at the end of each course. In this sense, there is a strong link, in which the more knowledge you are obtained, the better your certificate is.
This link, however, seems to be broken in our society nowadays. In order to get a good certificate with higher grade, students are willing and sometime forced to perform ad***ional acts other than studying, such as negative actions in exams, participating extra courses, purchasing faked certificates, offering money and even ***ual intimacy in exchange for higher grades, etc. Those acts not only reduce education quality but also cause other adverse impacts on our society.

Questions:
1. Why would students have to do such things?
2. Is it true that certification nowadays is more important than knowledge?
3. Some says that certification is for having a job. The better your certificate is, the better your job is. However, it is a fact that in many companies in Vietnam, certification is only considered as an initial requirement, but not really used for the purpose of working later. Let’s discuss.
4. Who would be responsible for the problem?

NICK VUJICIC’S TRIP TO VIETNAM

*originally from Friends’ English Club*
The below letter was shared by a Vietnamese one day after Nick went to Vietnam.
“Nick Vujicic is a handicapped person without arms and legs. He has overcome difficulties for many years to become a famous speaker in the world. Nick is admired everywhere. His story inspires people to overcome challenges.
It is exciting that Nick comes to Vietnam. However, when I know about the payment of 32 billion VND to invite him to Vietnam, I completely change my mind. In comparison with Nguyen Cong Hung’s story and what he did for Vietnamese handicapped community, I realize that life is unfair. God cannot make fair for everyone but we can do that for the handicapped.”

Questions:
1. What do you know about Nick Vujicic and his visit in Vietnam?
2. Many people think that Nick is selling his story and take advantages of everybody’s compassion to do business by selling his books. What do you think about this?
3. Do you think that nowadays Vietnamese people become more aggressive? (they tend to point out disadvantages rather than advantages)
4. What do you know about famous handicapped people in Vietnam? What did you do to help the handicapped community in Vietnam?
5. What did you learn from famous handicapped people in general and Nick in particular?
6. It has been revealed that the budget for Nick in Vietnam is $50,000, instead of 32 billion VND. However, if it was 32 billion VND for Nick, would it be worthy?

VOLUNTEERS

(This topic is dedicated to all HDEC key members, who always contribute to the development of the club, without asking for any benefits. Especially, this is for Anna Nguyen, a little sister of HDEC family, who has just died on the way of volunteering)
“Why do we waste our energy for something we are not benefited from?” That is my question at the beginning talking about voluntary. I cannot believe that several years later, I became an enthusiastic volunteer, a president of two English clubs, and an indispensable member of any social activities at my university, my workplace and other social communities.
Is it right that you receive no benefits from voluntary activities? I think it is absolutely no. I have received more than I expected from being a volunteer. It is the soft skills such as leadership skill, teamwork skill, presentation skill, etc. which I would never absorb from academic study. Furthermore, I receive a lot of certificates which add more values to my portfolio when applying for a job or a scholarship to study abroad later. More importantly, I have great time with a lot of good friends around, those who cheer me up when I am down and release all my trouble just by gossiping with.
Nevertheless, voluntary requires more than enthusiasm. To become a volunteer, it is necessary to have not only a warm heart of enthusiasm, but also awareness of danger and safety, abilities to protect yourself from unexpected accidents, teamwork skills to collaborate with other volunteers, and consciousness to realize that you are not being exploited by any organizations for advertising purposes.

Questions to ponder:
1. What are volunteer activities, in your opinion? What are benefits and drawbacks of volunteering?
2. Have you ever been a volunteer? What do you think about this job? What qualities are required for a good volunteer?
3. Tell us about any stories of volunteering that you know (or your own experience).
4. It is said that it takes much time for voluntary activities. Thus, it is difficult for married/working people to participate in such. Is it true? How can you manage your time to participate in these activities?
5. Do you want to be an HDEC key member? Why?
