Chapter 11 Choices We Make Hermione glared towards Harry and noticed the distorted look on his face. ?oNO!? she cried as she struggled to keep Harry from advancing forward. He shoved her off him and pointed his wand at the three struggling wizards. Before anyone else noticed Harry approaching, it was too late. ?oExpelliarumus!? he bellowed and the figures of Remus Lupin and Snape were blown backwards to reveal the quivering figure of Peter Pettirgrew. All faces were upon Harry, but he did not notice. His full attention was focused on the fat, cowering man before him. A feeling of pure hatred surged through him as he glared down at the man who betrayed his parents, let his innocent godfather rot in Azkaban for so many years, for helping Voldemort rise back to full power. ?oYOU!? was all that he managed to croak. A few jets of light were shot at him, but some uncontrollable power was flooding through his veins. An eerie light seemed to be radiating from him as the jets of light that unmistakably hit him had no effect. Harry channeled that power and yelled ?oCrucio!? The pathetic creature before him began to writhe and scream in pain. Harry?Ts emotions flooded him?hatred, guilt, elation, fear, and then an intense pain shot through his scar. He doubled over in pain. He feels to his knees grabbing his scar. It felt as if a thousand knives were stabbing at his body. He screamed out in agony as darkness swept over him. He began to wake up sometime later, but his body refused to respond to any movement. He winced in pain. Harry began to take in the surroundings. He could make out two other beds with people on them, but he couldn?Tt make out whom they were. He searched around for more detail, and he realized he was in a hospital room but it wasn?Tt like the one at Hogwarts. Then he began to wonder what had happened. Why am I here? As he tried to sort out his thoughts, all he could remember was being overwhelmed by an intense feeling and then blacking out. He tried to move once more and a small yelp escaped his lips as he did so. A nurse came bustling into the room snapping orders. ?oDon?Tt try to move. It?Tll only make matters worse.? ?oWhat happened?? he asked croakily. ?oThe people who brought you in said you were feeling the effects of the Cruciaus Curse.? Harry?Ts mind began to jump to the worse conclusion. Was there an attack? Where are Hermione and Ron? What about Ginny? What happened? I have to get to them. NOW! He began to struggle to force his legs and arms to move. The pain began to rebel relentlessly but his will to find his friends continued to push him to try to move. But it was all in vain. The nurse looked at him furiously. ?oDo NOT move! I?Tll go get someone who came in with you.? She retreated in a huff. Harry?Ts head was spinning; his body throbbing. His muscles seemed to relax slightly as he saw Remus follow the nurse back into the room. ?oHonestly, he won?Tt stay still!? she scolded. ?oMaybe you can do something with him.? Remus his a slight smirk as the nurse left the room again muttering, ?oHonestly?I?Tm just trying to help? But I?Tm only a nurse?.what would I know?? Remus chuckled but his _expression grew somber when he turned to face Harry. He immediately was flooded with questions. ?oWhat happened? Was there an attack? Is Hermione and Ginny all right? Where?Ts Ron? Why am I here?? Lupin sat gently next to Harry on his bed. He let out a deep sight. ?oHarry do you remember anything that happened?? ?oNo.? he said strongly. ?oWell. I remember something intense going through me and then it became dark and I woke up here.? Remus thought for a moment, choosing his words carefully. ?oEveryone is fine or will be. You surprised quite a few people this evening?? ?oBut what happened?? Harry pleaded earnestly. ?oWormtail.? Remus spat as his eyes darted to another bed in the room. Harry quickly ****ed his head towards his direction immediately regretting it as a fresh wave of pain filled the upper half of his body. Memories of earlier that evening flooded his mind, and he let out another yelp as it overwhelmed him again. Remus gazed down at Harry with concern etched on his dace. ?oDid I?? he asked wearily still in shock. Lupin nodded sadly. Harry?Ts face fell as he looked over at the unconscious figure of Wormtail. Instead of a feeling of hate coming over him, one of fear and guilt lay hold of him. ?oHe deserved it.? Lupin said spitefully. ?oWhat happened?? Harry asked quietly. Remus tore his gaze from Pettigrew and looked at Harry once more. ?oWormtail somehow got into Grimmuald in his rat form. When I realized he was there in the order meeting, I went after him. Professor Snape forced him back into his human form and we struggled with him. You came down the stairs and did the Cruciaus Curse on him. You both however screamed in pain, and we brought you here.? ?oI still don?Tt understand how it worked. It didn?Tt do that last time.? Harry spoke to the air. Lupin looked momentarily surprised. ?oHarry?.you?Tve?? Harry wanted to kick himself for letting that escape. ?oYes back in the Department of Mysteries.? ?oWho?? he questioned calmly. ?oLestrange. Right after Sirius fell?? he trailed off. Remus nodded his understanding and gave Harry a comfortable clap on the shoulder. Another feeling began to sweep over Harry. He was overwhelmed by something coursing through his body once more, but instead of it being an extreme pain; it was a powerful, almost reviving, feeling. He threw himself into Remus and cried. He wept bitterly once more for his parents, for Sirius, for the suffering he caused to those who merely knew him, and now for the pain he had vengefully willed upon someone else even if it was an enemy. A light was emanating from Harry?Ts body. It was different than before. Lupin gently pulled Harry away and looked at him in the eyes. His emerald green eyes seemed so endless. They were se deep like you could get lost in them. Looking into them was like seeing another world. Did they hold the key to the strange aura around him? Both of them remained silent and lost in though until someone came walking into the room. Professor Dumbledore approached Harry and Lupin looking at the strange magic that visibly surrounded Harry. Lupin was about to say something, but Dumbledore answered the question that could be read on his face. ?oRemus, Harry will be just fine. I assure you. But I do need to have a moment alone with him if you don?Tt mind.? Remus looked down at Harry with fatherly concern before retreating out of the room silently. Harry didn?Tt understand what was going on. He felt slightly annoyed at seeing the headmaster, but maybe he could get some answers. ?oWhy?Ts Wormtail here? He asked flatly. ?oHe should already be dead at showing his face. ?oHarry, Peter can still be of some use to us right now.? Dumbledore replied calmly. A light bulb went off in Harry?Ts head. ?oWe can get Sirius?T name cleared. Dumbledore was silent for a moment, and then answered, ?oNo Harry. It is not as simple as that.? ?oWhat!?? Harry asked giving the headmaster an incredulous look. ?oListen Harry. I will tell you a few things, But you have got to understand, it won?Tt be easy to get the ministry to corporate with everything that?Ts happened.? ?oI understand perfectly!? Harry screamed. ?oYou have an opportunity to clear an innocent man but you have some crazy plan for him.? Dumbledore did not respond quickly enough; Harry continued to rage, anger rising well to its boiling point. ?oOhh! And let me guess. This plan has everything to do with me, but I can?Tt know about it!? Suddenly, a few vases began to shatter, and Harry shook violently. Dumbledore placed a firm but gentle hand on Harry?Ts shoulder. He quickly became motionless and a calm _expression rested on his face. Harry blinked in confusion. ?oI see you are not ready.? Dumbledore said in a gently voice. ?oSir,? Harry said politely. ?oPlease tell me what?Ts going on.? ?oThere are some things that must wait until you are ready and other that you must discover on your own,? Dumbledore spoke sagely. ?oBut you can ask you questions and I will decide what?Ts pertinent for you to know.? Harry remained calm and asked, ?oWhy do thinks like that happen? Is that the unknown power the prophecy says will help me kill Voldemort?? ?oI cannot know for sure Harry, but I have my suspicions.? ?oProfessor, can you explain these powers? What are they?? ?oThere are powers in this world that cannot be explained. They go beyond the understanding of reason, and into the mysteries that life and death hold. Life and Death are both grand adventures that hold only meaning to the individual definitions that a person takes to heart. ?o Dumbledore said profoundly. Harry blinked at his Professor in disbelief. His mouth gaped in both shock and confusion. Dumbledore seeing his stunned _expression tried to explain in different terms. ?oHarry you know that the power that flows through your veins was evoked through an ancient magic when your mom sacrificed herself for you. It is this quality that is in every part of you that makes you Voldemort?Ts opposite. You see, he detests anything to do with the Light Harry. He thinks death is an ultimate evil while evidently it is neither good nor evil but a part of life. The only evil that theoretically exists is the desire to control whether by power or any other means. Voldemort?Ts power grows by the fear and chaos that he spreads, thus giving him more power. He uses that power to control others?like playing a god who can cause pain and take lives. That kind of deed kills you and damns you. Every time you take a life, it kills a part of you.? Dumbledore sighed deeply. ?oJust like you Harry, Voldemort was an extremely gifted wizard, but his actions led to his soul being dead and unfeeling. But when you do things considered as extraordinary feats of magic like your patronus, or throwing off strong magical curses, or doing wandless magic occur when certain emotions rise. This is an ability that all possess but most are not able to even show signs of it much less master it if they do. Your ability to feel and hurt as deep as you do is one of your greatest strengths, and it can be a powerful tool in your defeat against Voldemort.? Dumbledore paused to let this sink it. It was, after all, a lot to take in much less swallow the first time hearing it. ?oBut Professor,? Harry managed to speak out still seemingly dumbfounded. ?oWhy is it that I am the only that?Ts supposed to stop Voldemort?? His headmaster looked thoughtful for a moment, and then responded, ?oHarry. Tell me. Do you think that Voldemort has been the only evil that has risen throughout history?? Harry looked up at the old wizard and remembered his defeat of the Dark Wizard Grizwauld. ?oNo,? he said quietly. ?oVoldemort is one of the strongest dark wizards that his risen in centuries, but each time an evil has arisen, a savior has always been lifted out the ashes to face this evil.? Harry nodded, but was still troubled. ?oWhat does that have to do with the prophecy and me killing Voldemort?? ?oBe patient Harry. I am getting to that.? He glanced out the window briefly before continuing. ?oIt is almost impossible to predict the future because things are always changing as well as people. No one can predict the future because no one can see beyond what is physically in front of them, although a select few are given a limited inner sight that is considered prophetic. The best anyone can plan are moves to anticipate both the moves of their opponent and a reaction for counterattack, but all that does is prepare someone.? This sounded a lot like chess to Harry. For a moment, he had an amusing thought watching Ron play Professor Dumbledore at a game of wizard?Ts chess. But his thoughts were interrupted as Dumbledore continued. ?o?no one can know exactly the consequences of their actions?that is where fate likes to show it?Ts odd sense of humor. Fate cannot control anything or anyone; that is done by an individual?Ts will of their own, but setting the events afterward is like its revenge for lack of control. But Harry you have to be wise of the choices that you choose to make. You cannot control what happens afterwards. I would be very careful in the future not to be so quick to act so instantly on your emotions. If you do, you lose complete control even over the choices you make.? Harry thought Dumbledore was both wise and mad at times, but he was convinced that Dumbledore was now more than ever. Professor Dumbledore clearly saw Harry?Ts confusion and tried one more time to explain. ?oHarry, though it is not certain that you will kill Voldermort, you will be the one who overcomes him and vanquishes his power. The prophecy recorded predicted you, but again Voldemort was the one to choose to go after you thus marking you as his equal. How you will do this, I do not know. But understand this Harry, the ancient magic that saved you the first time has many forms that I do not pretend to understand. Just like the love that surrounds you from the sacrifices others have made for you, the choices you make will also leave their mark. When the time comes Harry, you will know what to do.? Dumbledore stood up and left, leaving a very puzzled Harry to think about everything that was just said
