NEW MEXICO -- The F-117A Nighthawk Stealth fighter from the 49th Fighter Wing, 9th Fighter Squadron "Iron Knights," from Holloman Air Force Base, N.M. flies a training mission over the New Mexico desert. One of only two operational Nighthawk squadrons, the 9th deploys world wide using special low-observable technologies to deliver precision guided weapons against heavily defended targets.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the "Warthog." Hawgsmoke is a biennial bombing and tactical gunnery competition of the A-10, in which 20 squadrons around the globe come together to fly the Warthog and compete for the honor of the "best of the best" in ground attack and target destruction.

KORAT ROYAL AIR FORCE BASE, Thailand (AFPN) -- Aircrews from the 25th Fighter Squadron perform pre-flight procedures during an exercise Cope Tiger ''06 mission here Feb. 8. The crews are some of the 300 U.S. servicemembers participating in the exercise here, about 110 miles northeast of Bangkok. An ad***ional 1,000 Thai and Singaporean forces are participating in the exercise. Cope Tiger ''06 provides air-to-air, air-to-ground and large force employment training for crews while expanding the capabilities and readiness of U.S. and allied forces. Cope Tiger ''06 runs through Feb. 18.

BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan (AFPN) -- An A-10 Thunderbolt II takes off on a combat mission as A-10 crew chiefs, weapons loaders and an avionics specialist ready others for another mission. Since Sept. 15, A-10s here have flown more than 1,700 combat sorties, totaling more than 6,000 combat hours in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The A-10 was the first Air Force aircraft specially designed for close air support of ground forces.

The exercise is a multi-aircraft exercise simulating combat operations in Southeast Asia. The aircraft are from the 23rd Fighter Group at Pope Air Force Base, N.C.
