The new transport arrived after flying from the Lockheed Martin production plant on Dobbins Air Reserve Base, Ga. It is the first J model assigned to an active-duty unit.

A B-52 Stratofortress takes off from Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, Nov. 3 armed with four Mk 56 mines. This sortie was the 10th and final mission of a week-long joint sea mine-laying exercise with the Navy. The B-52s dropped a total of 96 inert mines on two practice mine fields that were each three miles long and a mile wide.

BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. (AFPN) -- Munitions on display show the full capabilities of the B-52 Stratofortress.

ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam (AFPN) -- B-52 Stratofortress mechanics inspect their aircraft during phase maintenance at Hangar 1 here. The Airmen are members of the 2nd Maintenance Squadron based at Barksdale Air Force Base, La. The B-52s come here from a forward-deployed location and go into phase maintenance after 300 flying hours. The $34-million hangar is the newest in the Air Force and can house any type of Air Force aircraft.

MINOT AIR FORCE BASE, N.D. (AFPN) -- B-52H Stratofortress bombers taxi before taking off for a mission. Nine of the huge bombers took part in a rapid-launch exercise Dec. 9 to test the base''s ability to respond quickly to national directives.

BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. -- A B-52H Stratofortress bomber, assigned with the 2nd Bomb Wing here, takes off on a training mission Dec. 2.

1950s -- The B-52 Stratofortress joined the Air Force inventory in February 1955. It is still flying.
