NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- A B-52 Stratofortress from Barksdale Air Force Base, La., drops live ordnance over the Nevada Test and Training Range near here May 12 during an Air Force firepower demonstration. The demonstration showcases the Air Force''s air and space capabilities.

For more than 40 years B-52 Stratofortresses have been the backbone of the manned strategic bomber force for the United States. The B-52 is capable of dropping or launching the widest array of weapons in the U.S. inventory. This includes gravity bombs, cluster bombs, precision guided missiles and joint direct attack munitions. Updated with modern technology the B-52 will be capable of delivering the full complement of joint developed weapons and will continue into the 21st century as an important element of our nation''s defenses.

OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM -- A B-52 Stratofortress takes off on a unique mission with new equipment, April 7, 2003. The mission they are preparing for will be the first "real world" mission where a Lightening 2 Pod is used for laser-guided bomb delivery. The base at which the aircrew is deployed is currently the home of the 457th Air Expe***ionary Group, which has been positioned *****pport Operation Iraqi Freedom.

OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM -- A B-52 Stratofortress from the 457th Air Expe***ionary Group takes off for its 100th combat mission from a forward-deployed location April 11. Aircrews at this forward-deployed location have flown more than 1,200 flying hours and dropped more than 2,400 bombs in the coalition effort.

BAGRAM AIR FIELD, Afghanistan -- Airmen offload a CH-47 Chinook heavy lift helicopter from the back of a C-17 Globemaster III here. The helicopter arrived in parts from Fort Hood, Texas. After reassembly, it will fly to Pakistan to help with earthquake relief operations. This was the first of 30 CH-47s to transit through Bagram. The base has been a hub of relief efforts.

MCCHORD AIR FORCE BASE, Wash. -- Airmen here load pallets of fuel onto a C-17 Globemaster III *****pport the C-17 Globemaster III''s first polar airdrop. About 10,000 gallons of fuel were dropped to help National Science Foundation scientists near the North Pole.

OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM -- U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster IIIs are lined up waiting to transport U.S. Army and Air Force personnel forward from an air base in Europe in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom on March 26.

BAGRAM AIR BASE, Afghanistan -- A C-17 Globemaster III from Charleston Air Force Base, S.C., moves up the taxiway as another begins its climb over the mountains surrounding this base. Airlift serves a vital role in ongoing operations in this landlocked country, bringing critical supplies and equipment to coalition forces supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
