Hitzfeld named the coach of the year

MONACO, August 24 (DS) - Bayern Munich manager Ottmar Hitzfeld was named the coach of the year at UEFA's annual awards gala in Monte Carlo.

According to UEFA officials Liverpool and Alaves fans were the best supporters last year. The award was the result of their excellent behaviour at last season's UEFA Cup final.

The trophy of the most valuable player went to Bayern Munich skipper Stefan Effenberg, who will miss European Super Cup match due to the injury.

Effenberg's teammate Oliver Kahn was honoured as the best goalkeeper of the year. Kahn was also given the Fair Play award as he consoled Valencia's goalie Santiago Canizares after Champions League final.

The other three awards went to Spain as Valencia player Argentinean Roberto Ayala was named the defender of the year, his former teammate Gaizka Mendieta, now with Lazio, was nominated as the best midfielder, while the best striker was Real Madrid's star Raul.
