My Vietnamese ?~big brother?T said I should begin my year in Vietnam with a visit to a Buddhist temple, otherwise know as a Pagoda. When I arrived in Saigon it was the end of a week of big celebrations for Tet, the Luna New Year. According to the fortune teller who read my palm, cards and made me break a twig off a bush (!?), the first part of the Year of the Monkey would be full of difficult obstacles, I wasn?Tt going to marry a rich man as I would give all his money away but the gods, my ancestors and my guardian were looking after me and if I needed anything, all I had to do was ask?.
I spent the first week or so finding my feet again in all this craziness, catching up with friends, visiting my Vietnamese God daughter who is now a healthy 4 month old and meeting new Vietnamese friends and family of Lan, the Vietnamese lady who stayed with us in Townsville for a month when I was home. Lan took me away for a weekend to the next province to visit her friends and find some hibiscus leaves to make tea in order to help improve my skin!! We were scooting along at about 70km (Yes with helmets on Mum!) when another bike passed us: Father driving with one hand, other hand was holding his sleeping son, then behind was the Mother with another baby in her arms? The mind boggles!
I decided to stay in Saigon a few days longer so I could greet Colour4kids, the Dutch charity that is funding lots of the renovations at the Kon Tum orphanages. They began working in Vietnam 4 years ago, renovating orphanages and then coming for a few weeks to paint beautiful murals and decorate. They are all professional decorative painters in Holland so they really transform the buildings and brighten the lives of so many children. This time they were coming to Vietnam not only armed with their paints, brushes and bright curtains but also with a documentary team! Their documentary began with Ms An and I welcoming them at the airport: flowers, hugs and kisses Whilst in Saigon they organised for the Dutch Lady, one of the biggest milk powder companies in Vietnam *****pply the orphanages with milk free of charge! Wonderful news! A few days later the 7 of us, (3 C4K, 2 documentary team, Ms An and I) set off in a hired mini van, full and overflowing with gifts for the children. It was a 13 hour trip to the orphanages in the Central Highlands, travelling along the bumpy roads barely missing bikes, cars and lots of CHICKENS, (which were supposed to have been culled!) C4K had bought bright curtain material in Bangkok, collected clothes and toys in Holland and I had my bags full of donations from Australia and a few extras from Austrian and Dutch friends in Saigon. What an international effort!
We arrived safely and after a good night?Ts sleep Ms An and I began what would be our month of ?~Kon Tum Orphanage Guided Tours?T. I was ?~Tour Leader?T at the front and Ms An would hurry along the stragglers at the back.. First comments were regarding the churches on almost every second corner, the constant ?~Hello?Ts?T from the locals, the bombshell fence and by the time we had walked the 10 mins to the old wooden church Marcel, the C4K director was already planning on buying a house there. Kon Tum had won them over before we even got to the children! We were welcomed into the orphanage by the nuns with some of their home-made port. Nothing like a shot of port at 9am to wake you up! C4K were impressed by the con***ions at the orphanage and surprised that so many children lived there. Bravo for the nuns - they really do such a great job! We showed them all the renovations that had been completed last year. They had funded the large new covered area for drying clothes and V.N.O.P. funding had been used for the rest of the work including, renovations to all the bathrooms and kitchen. After visiting the orphanage and spending some time with the children the nuns had prepared us a feast for lunch.
After visiting the second orphanage, Vinh Son 2, it became clear that there was lots of renovation work that still needed to be done here. There were many long discussions with Sister Jeanne, the head nun, Father Lien, the priest who oversees both orphanages and Mr Son, the contractor before all the work began. Sometimes things can happen really fast in Vietnam, often by the end of a conversation about a certain renovation the workers had already started knocking down the wall or fixing the cement. So C4K were set for a month of renovation work at Vinh Son 2, lots of work to do before they could start decorating with their paintings and curtains and the film crew were there to record it all and with Ms An?Ts help most things seemed to run smoothly.
Then the next 2 lovely Aussie visitors walked through the door! Emma, a special Education teacher, who had visited last year, and Donna, a nurse, were girlfriends from Townsville who had come to spend some time with the children and help me out for a week. Talk about hands on helpers! Emma started teaching Blip, the 4 year old deaf boy some sign language together with his carer and some of the older girls who were interested. We plan to eventually take him to Saigon to get an actual hearing assessment done. The girls spent most afternoons bathing the babies, (in the bath we bought last year but nobody had used it!) taking time to give each baby a bottle so they didn?Tt have to feed themselves and giving many of much the needed hugs. One day we decided to buy lots of face washers and actually clean all the grubby faces, snotty noses, and dirty eyes. One little girl must have had ear infections for a long time and had wax and puss that had seeped out all over her ears and dried into a hard crust. It took me about 30 mins to clean it off!
Another morning was spent with the Aussie girls showing the Kindergarten teachers and workers how to measure the correct quantities of milk powder and water for the children. As they didn?Tt have enough milk powder they had been watering it down and putting in 1kg of sugar in a 15litre container to make it sweet enough for the children to drink ?" not helping all those baby teeth that were rotting! So we organised with C4K for the Kindy to be included on the Dutch Lady, milk donation list. Whilst talking with the Kindergarten teacher, she mentioned that she would like to continue her studies in Early Childhood Education. As she was only paid approximately $AU20 a month she couldn?Tt afford to do it and asked if I could find a sponsor. Of course I immediately thought of the Zonta Women?Ts club in Townsville who had offered to sponsor a project for educating women! I asked her to write up a profile outlining her family and employment backgrounds and details on the course she would like to do. Ms An is in the process of translating it so I can send it back to the Zonta Club.
Early one morning I went to pick up Visitor Group Number 3. from the airport in the next province. The Australian Vietnam Veterans Reconstruction Group had recently joined forces with Project Vietnam, a team of nurses from Melbourne who come to Saigon once a year to run nursing conferences at the local hospitals. They do such a fantastic job and are much loved by all the Vietnamese medical teams. I had been in email contact with the group for 2 years but had only met a few of then so it was lovely to finally put names to faces and to have them take time out of their busy schedules to visit us at the orphanages. Aussie women were now entering the Kon Tum orphanages in force. Our numbers had jumped from 1 to 3 and now to 11! But this wasn?Tt enough to scare away our wonderful male Vietnamese friend Dr Nhu who also took time out to come and help at the orphanage for the weekend! First we visited the Kindergarten, run by the nuns for the ethnic minority children, of the 100 students about 50 where from Vinh Son 1, the orphanage just across the road. Dr Nhu started taking lots of photos, mostly of the skin problems that the children had, to show to his colleagues back in Saigon. Then we walked across the road to Vinh Son1 orphanage and spent the morning playing with the toddlers, helping feed them and giving lots of hugs. Dr Nhu spent the time discussing the children?Ts health problems with Mr Thuy, the nurse who has been volunteering there for 15 years. The AVVRG nurses had bought with them many donations including some medical supplies and Nurse Thuy especially liked the new baby scales they had given him.
After lunch we took the nice walk through one of the local villages to the second orphanage Vinh Son 2. We were all sitting down waiting to meet the Director Sister Jeanne, when Ms An came in and told me we had to ?~scatter?T! The police had been there earlier on, looking at all the renovation and construction work happening so they didn?Tt want it to look like a ?~meeting?T with a group of foreigners. Emma took some of the nurses to the nursery and I took the rest down the back to see the new bathrooms, dorms and pig pens. Dr Nhu went to meet Nurse Buan and discuss what medication and supplies she needed. It was discovered that she only had the 1992 version of a pharmaceutical dictionary in French so Dr Nhu promised to get her the 2003 version in Vietnamese! Dr Nhu also examined a little girl of 18 months, Julie who was born with no arms and a club foot. He suggested that she be taken to a specialist in Saigon for another examination to see if she could be fitted with prosthetic arms and have an operation to straighten her foot so she could learn to walk. Her young and very caring parents brought her to the orphanage when they heard that a team of foreigners where working there, in hope that someone could help their daughter. All of the children love to sing and dance so they put on a small performance for the nurses before it was time to head back to the hotel and sort out all of their bags of donations. In the morning we visited a small Banhar village not far from Kon Tum and then had to say goodbye to the lovely Aussie nurses. It wouldn?Tt be long before we would see them again as 4 nurses from Kon Tum had been invited to attend their Nursing Conference in Saigon the following week.
Visitor group number 4 ?" more Aussies! My good friend Roberta, the chief pharmacist at the French Vietnamese hospital, her recently adopted 1 year old Vietnamese son, Oliver and her 76 year old mother from Brisbane made the trip up to visit us for a few days! Roberta had brought a bag full of worm tablets and more clothes for the children. They arrived just at the end of the big soccer match that C4K had organised between the eldest boys at the two orphanages. The players even got the official Dutch soccer team jerseys which were donated before C4K left. Unfortunately one of the boys dislocated his knee so they called in the local ?~Medicine-Man?T to PULL it back into place!!!!! One ?~friend?T held him down screaming while the ?~Dr?T yanked it back into place! I just about passed out watching and made Ms An promise that she wouldn?Tt call the same Dr if I had an accident! But half an hour later he was up hobbling around again in no pain. Maybe the locals do always know best?

Bài này không trực tiếp liên quan đến công việc "từ thiện" mà chỉ là công tác "thiện nguyện", "tình nguyện". Tuy nhiên không biết post vào đâu, có lẽ vào đây là hợp nhất. Chả là United Nations ở Hà Nội sẽ hỗ trợ $1000 cho bác nào có hoạt động tình nguyện hay nhất, sáng tạo, và có nhiều ảnh hưởng đến phong trào làm việc tình nguyện ở VN.

Sponsorship Contest: Promoting Volunteerism for the MDGs
United Nations Volunteers (UNV) is pleased to launch a
contest inviting young Vietnamese people to apply for
sponsorship of USD 1,000 *****pport an initiative that
promotes volunteerism for the Millennium Development Goals
(MDGs).
This contest follows on an innovative effort made in 2003 by
Nguyen Van Dung, a 24 year-old volunteer, who traveled from
Hanoi to HCMC by bicycle to raise awareness of the MDGs
amongst young people all over Viet Nam. He spoke to groups
of young people in Hue, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Dalat, and Vung
Tau encouraging them to help achieve the MDGs Viet Nam.
This year, UNV?Ts sponsorship wants to reward a similar
initiative that is both innovative and effective in
promoting volunteerism for the MDGs. The contest is open to
all Vietnamese individuals or groups whose members are under
25. Sponsorship will be granted for one best innovative idea
on International Youth Day (12 August 2004) and the
initiative should be completed by International Volunteer
Day (5 December 2004) at the latest.
To apply for this sponsorship, candidates need to send a
proposal (in Vietnamese, max. 4 pages) to UNV, including the
following components:
- Clear description of the initiative you want to undertake
(including time, venue, target group, etc.)
- Explanation of how the initiative will promote
volunteerism for the MDGs
- Short introduction of the person or persons that will
undertake the initiative (educational background,
occupation, motivation, etc.)
- Breakdown of how the financial sponsorship of up to USD
1,000 will be used
- Contact details (including phone number and e-mail
address, if possible)
Sponsorship proposals should be submitted by 15 July 2004 to

Millennium Development Goals
Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
Halve, between 1990 and 2015, the proportion of people whose
income is less than one dollar a day, and the proportion of
people who suffer from hunger
Goal 2: Achieve universal primary education
Ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls
alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary
schooling.
Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women
Eliminate gender disparity in primary and secondary
education preferably by 2005 and to all levels of education
no later than 2015.
Goal 4: Reduce child mortality
Reduce by two-thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under-five
mortality rate.

Goal 8: Develop a global partnership for development
Develop further an open, rules-based, predictable,
non-discriminatory trading and financial system. Including a
commitment to good governance, development, and poverty
reduction - both nationally and internationally.

Một số địa chỉ của những gia đình bị nhiễm chất độc da cam/điôxin:
- Ảnh hưởng từ người bố, 6 đứa con của anh chị Nguyễn Tiến Chiến và Vũ Thị Gái ở thôn Bến Hiệp, xã Quỳnh Giao, Quỳnh Phụ, đều bị chết vì thiếu tháng và sinh non. Hiện nay, mặc dù đã ngoài 50 tuổi, nhưng anh chị vẫn phải thay nhau chăm sóc đứa con gái 26 tuổi bị dị dạng. Chị Gái sức yếu vì đã qua nhiều lần sinh nở, cả gia đình chỉ trong chờ vào suất lương hưu ít ỏi và quầy tạp hoá nhỏ. Họ chỉ mong làm sao có được chiếc xe lăn dành cho cô con gái 26 tuổi để tiện chăm sóc hàng ngày.
- Vợ chồng anh chị Trần Đào Ngọc và Nguyễn Thị Nhung ở thị trấn Quỳnh Côi, đã 16 năm nay phải dùng xích để cùm chân con mình. Cháu Trần Đào Tân, sinh năm 1981, từ nhỏ mỗi khi lên cơn động kinh thường đập phá mọi thứ xung quanh và tự cắn mình. Mười đầu ngón tay của Tân gần như hỏng hết, hai cánh tay chằng chịt sẹo do những vết răng để lại. Đứa con thứ hai của anh chị chết từ năm 1 tuổi do đầu bị biến dạng. Những đứa con còn lại, đứa thì thường xuyên lên cơn co giật, đứa thì trí não kém phát triển và phát triển không bình thường, bị tật ở đốt xương sống gây đau lưng kinh niên.

- Thái Bình là một trong những tỉnh có số nạn nhân nhiễm chất độc màu da cam nhiều nhất trong cả nước ( 27.734 = 1/8 số nạn nhân nhiễm chất độc màu da cam trên cả nước. Trong số đó số người đã chết lên tới 1.492 người )
- Một gia đình có 4 nguời con bị nhiễm chất độc màu da cam : Anh Trần Đào Ngọc và chị Nguyễn Thị Nhung cùng tham gia chiến đấu ở vùng bị rải chất độc màu da cam tại Thanh Hoá và Nghệ An, hai anh chị trở về với nhiều thương tật trên người. Nhưng những tai hoạ thật sự dày vò cuộc đời họ khi những đứa con lần lượt ra đời . Đứa đầu tiên năm nay đã 24 tuổi cũng là 24 năm anh chị quay quắt với những đứa con ấy trong những cơn điên những cơn đập phá cuồng loạn, những tiếng thét tiếng cười tiếng gào lanh lảnh, rùng rợn khi hoang dại vang lên cả ngày lẫn đêm . Không biết bao nhiêu lần nó đã đập đầu vào tường, tự cắn vào tay m ình trong những cơn điên - Chị Nhung kể. Hai anh chị phải xích chân con lại để chúng không thể bỏ đi lang thang, kh ông đánh đ ập cha mẹ và những người thân trong gia đình. Cả bốn đứa con đứa nào cũng điên loạn bệnh tật, anh chị giờ không còn đủ nước mắt để khóc thương cho cuộc đời mình. Ngày ngày hai anh chị phải làm lụng rất vất vả để có tiền thuốc ********* các con. Chị Nhung cho biết khoản tiền anh chị nợ ngân hàng lên tới ...30 triệu đồng . Và tất cả khoản tiền trợ cấp mà anh chị được hưởng chỉ vừa đủ tiền lãi xuất. Chị sợ sau này vợ chồng chị già yếu, không đủ sức nuôi các con, nêu không ai cưu mang chắc chúng sẽ đi lang thang rồi bỏ xác nơi đầu đường xó chợ. Và nghĩ tới đó thôi chị không còn muốn sống nữa.
- Gia đình anh Nguyễn Tiến Chiến và chị Nguyễn Thị Gái ở thôn Bến Hiệp, xã Quỳnh Giao huyện Quỳnh Phụ tỉnh Thái Bình. Chị gái kể 11 lần mang thai thì 5 lần sẩy thai. Đến đứa thứ 6 may mắn được ra đời thì trong suốt 24 năm qua nó vẫn nằm co quắp trên giường như một cành cây héo. ?o Nhìn những đứa trẻ khác cùng tuổi con mình giờ đã có chồng có con, còn con mình chỉ quanh năm nằm bẹp như con mèo hen, tôi chỉ còn biết khóc ?o .

một topic rất hay,nhưng có lẽ chúng ta chưa đủ khả năng để làm một hôị như thế naỳ mà có lẽ chúng ta nên làm theo là nêú ai cần giúp đỡ mà trong tầm khả năng cuả mình thì haỹ nhanh chóng làm còn nêú ngoaì khả năng thì sử dụng những biện pháp tôí ưu nhất đẻ giaỉ quyết miễn sao là phù hợp vơí tình hình.

Chúng ta đã bàn về hoạt động giúp đỡ trẻ em gặp hoàn cảnh khó khăn ở quê nhà trong buổi offline ngày 31/8 và kế hoạch sơ bộ đã đạt được sự đồng thuận của tất cả các thành viên tham gia!
Trong mấy ngày qua, khi Tết Trung thu ngày càng tới gần, các thành viên quản trị Box đã nhận được rất nhiều ý kiến của các bạn, phần lớn đều "mong ngóng" về sự kiện này và không ít người sốt ruột vì box vẫn cứ "im ỉm, không thấy rục rịch" gì. Đặc biệt có bạn 108CBL từ trong Sài Gòn cũng muốn được gửi quà ra cho các em nhỏ. T9G68 phải đi công tác các tỉnh suốt nhưng cũng phải lên tiếng ở SMS... Kắc Tùng Cheng va? King_Demon ngày nào online cũng hỏi tôi tổ chức hoạt động từ thiện đến đâu rồi.
Tôi đã liên hệ với Đức (InterGerman) ở đầu Thái Bình. Đức cho biết đã bàn với Hương (huong26iws2002) và hai bạn đang cố gắng lên danh sách sớm nhất. Bạn cũng nói rõ sẽ đón chúng ta tại thị xã Thái Bình ngay khi đoàn từ Hà Nội về!
Ở Hà Nội, Connector sẽ là đầu mối liên lạc của các bạn (số cellphone của tôi là 0912236466). Về phương tiện đi lại, tôi muốn nhờ chị Toét sắp xếp cho anh chị em sao cho tiện nhất (chúng ta cho ý kiến nên thuê xe hay là đi xe khách ngoài bến, hoặc xe máy...). Về tổ chức, tôi muốn nhờ đồng chí VoHongKong. Chúng ta cùng bàn bạc về hình thức quà tặng cho các em nhỏ.
Đây là một việc la?m hết sức có ý nghifa, đóng vai tro? vô cu?ng quan trọng trong hoạt động cu?a Box Thái Bi?nh và thể hiện một bước tiến mới, vượt trội do với nhưfng gi? chúng ta đạt được kê? tư? nga?y khai sinh. Vi? vậy tôi kêu gọi tất ca? tha?nh viên, không kể trong hay ngoài Box, không kể cũ và mới, trong hay ngoài nước, các bạn hãy góp phần nhỏ bé giúp các em nhỏ gặp khó khăn ở Thái Bình có thêm niềm vui trong ngày Rằm Tháng Tám.

Nói chung còn nhiều nội dung cần nêu rõ ràng hơn.
hãy ý thức rằng đây là hành động từ thiện, vì vậy, nếu có thể tiết kiệm được những gì cho các em thì chúng ta nên tiết kiệm. Ví dụ: thuê xe ô tô bèo cũng hết 900, nhưng nếu chuyển sang đi xe máy thì sẽ chỉ mất tiền xăng, ..... nói chung nên tiết kiệm đến mức tối đa để các em được hưởng phần nhiều hơn chúng ta.
