    Scholarships
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The conference organizers are committed to making AIDS 2010 accessible to people from resource-limited settings and communities, researchers, young people, community activists and civil society representatives.
For AIDS 2008 in Mexico over 800 scholarships were granted. For AIDS 2010 the same share of the total budget has been allocated for international and media scholarships. The organizers therefore have the ambition to be able to offer the same level of scholarships as that for AIDS 2008.
Scholarships will be offered to people from a variety of backgrounds, including those who are submitting abstracts, workshop proposals and programme activity proposals (Global Village or Youth Programme). A number of applicants who are not submitting directly to the conference programme, as well as media representatives will also be granted scholarships.
Please note that funding is limited and demand for scholarships is high.
Scholarship applications are accepted from 8 December 2009 to 10 February 2010.
    International Scholarship Programme
Scholarships provide financial assistance to a number of people from resource-limited settings and communities, key affected populations, people living with HIV, young people, researchers and students to help them attend the conference. The International Scholarship Programme is open to everyone around the world. Priority will be given to those whose participation will help enhance their work in their own communities, to those who are able to assist in the transfer of skills and knowledge acquired at the conference, and to those whose abstract, workshop or programme activity (Global Village or Youth Programme) submission has been selected.
Scholarship selection is made based on a non-biased scoring system established in advanced.
Although every attempt will be made to assist as many people as possible, we regret that there are only a limited number of international scholarships available. On average, less than 10% of applicants are awarded. Applicants are therefore strongly encouraged to seek other funding as well.
Click here to read the terms and con***ions of the International Scholarship Programme.
    Media Scholarship Programme
A very limited number of scholarships will be available for media representatives from around the world. Media scholarship applicants will be asked to provide media accre***ation and supporting documents. No applications will be accepted without submission of the required supporting documents. It is the applicantsõ?T responsibility to ensure they have submitted the correct documents.
Click here to read the terms and con***ions of the Media Scholarship Programme.
Applying for a an International or Media Scholarship
Those interested in applying for a scholarship must complete the online scholarship application form. For general scholarship applications (International or Media), your scholarship application begins through your conference profile between 8 December 2009 and 10 February 2010.
If you plan *****bmit an abstract, programme activity or workshop proposal and are interested in applying for a scholarship, you should start your scholarship request through the abstract or proposal submission system. You will then receive instructions on how to complete the scholarship request.
    Types of Support
Scholarship applicants will be able to request a full or partial scholarship.
    A full scholarship includes:
õ?Âregistration to the conference (includes access to all sessions and exhibitions)
õ?Âeconomy-class travel (pre-paid ticket at the lowest fare available)
õ?Âaccommodation (shared in hotel twin rooms for the days of the conference)
õ?Âmodest living allowance for the conference duration (18-23 July 2010, the equivalent of EUR 30 per day)
õ?Âtravel insurance for the duration of the conference
A partial scholarship includes any combination of the above.
    Application Criteria
Applications are open to anyone working in the field of HIV and AIDS.
Most of the questions asked on the application form are related to personal details and work experience. There are also four essay questions which ask for further details regarding the applicantõ?Ts organization, occupation or involvement in HIV/AIDS, motivation to attend the conference and how the applicantõ?Ts organization or community would benefit from the scholarship.
General scholarship applicants will be asked *****bmit a letter of recommendation after completing the scholarship application. No general application will be accepted without submission of the letter of recommendation.
Media scholarship applicants will also be asked to provide media accre***ation and supporting documents. No media application will be accepted without submission of the required supporting documents.

    Overview
The Jefferson Fellowships program was launched in 1967 to enhance public understanding through the news media of cultures, issues and trends in the Asia Pacific region, broadly defined as Asia, the Pacific Islands and the United States. The Fellowships provide U.S. and Asia Pacific journalists with an opportunity to broaden their understanding of Asia Pacific issues and build a professional network through one week of dialogue with professional colleagues and experts at the East-West Center, followed by a two-week study tour to cities in Asia or the U.S.
    Fall 2010 Jefferson Fellowships
Theme: The Road to Energy Security: Paved with Efficiencies, Renewable Technologies and Investment
Energy security is one of the most pressing challenges of our time, especially in light of its inextricable link to economic well-being and the environment. However, the uneven distribution of energy supplies among countries has led to significant vulnerabilities. Threats to energy security include the political instability of several energy producing countries, the manipulation of energy supplies, the competition over energy sources, attacks on supply infrastructure, as well as accidents and natural disasters. For these reasons, governments in nearly all the large consuming nations are now considering various domestic and foreign policy measures to increase energy efficiencies develop renewable technologies to scale and create a positive investment climate for industry.
Against this backdrop, the Fall 2010 Jefferson Fellowships program will look specifically at two of the largest users of energy, the U.S. and China, and their efforts in addressing energy security. The program will take special care to look at the challenges and opportunities involved in improving energy efficiency and in developing renewable technologies. In ad***ion, the Fall 2010 program will examine the two countriesõ?T efforts to facilitate joint research and development. Finally, the program will examine how each country seeks to promote public and private investment in the supplies of todayõ?Ts fossil fuel sources as well as the clean technologies that will transform the energy system for the future.

    Fellowship Application

    What Is the Fellowship?

The Joan Shorenstein Center offers a one-semester fellowship at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. Fellows are domestic or international journalists, scholars and/or policymakers who are interested in the influence of the press on public policy and politics.
The fellowships offer a unique opportunity for scholars and practitioners to share their knowledge and expertise in a collegial and intellectually stimulating environment. Fellows participate in weekly seminars with scholars, a luncheon speakers series with invited journalists or policymakers and in other organized programs of the Shorenstein Center and Harvard University. The Fellowship Program is not a degree or journalism training program.
    Objective

The purpose of the Fellowship Program is to advance existing research in press/politics and to provide an opportunity for distinguished experts to reflect on their discipline. Our goal is to foster a collegial and intellectual environment that will enrich and complement one's knowledge of the field. The primary focus for a fellow in residence is a paper (approximately 15 pages in length) on a topic examining and analyzing the influence of the press on politics and public policy in the domestic or international arena.
    Guidelines

    • Applicants must be fluent in reading, writing and speaking English.
    • Applicants must be journalists, scholars or policymakers active in the field of press, politics and public policy.
    • Fellows are required to live in residence for one semester (fall semester runs approximately September through December; spring semester runs approximately February through May).
    • Domestic and international applicants are eligible.
    • Stipend: $30,000 disbursed in four installments over the semester. Travel and living expenses are not covered by the Center.
    • Office space, computer, printer and telephone are provided.
    • All application materials must be received on or before FEBRUARY 1, 2011.
    How to Apply

Applicants may submit materials either as printed hard copies OR electronic files. Download a PDF of the fellowship application form.
Originals of the following documents must be received on or before February 1, 2011. PLEASE DO NOT STAPLE.
    • A cover letter from the applicant stating interest in the fellowship.
    • Completed fellowship application form.
    • A three- to five-page research project proposal.
