PhD Hierarchical/distributed model predictive control of large-scale systems
Delft, (Zuid-Holland), 40 hours per week Delft University of Technology

    Job description
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Manufacturing systems, power networks, transportation systems, road traffic networks, process plants, and other large-scale networked systems are often composed of multiple subsystems, with many embedded sensors and actuators, and are characterized by complex dynamics and mutual influences such that local control decisions have long-range effects throughout the system. This results in a huge number of problems that must be tackled for the design of an overall control system in order to achieve a safe, efficient, and robust operation and prevent serious disasters and malfunctions.
To deal with these problems and to cope with the complexity of the control task, we will use a hierarchical control set-up in which the control tasks are distributed over time and space. In such a set-up, systems of supervisory and strategic functionality reside at higher levels, while at lower levels the single units, or local agents, must guarantee specific operational objectives. At any level, the local agents must negotiate their outcomes and requirements with lower and higher levels.
The goal of the project is to develop methods for designing controllers for complex large-scale systems based on such a hierarchical control framework. In particular, we will use Model Predictive Control (MPC), which has already proven its usefulness for control of small-scale systems, but which cannot yet be applied to large-scale systems due to computational, coordination, and communication problems. We will solve these issues and develop new MPC methods for large-scale networked systems, both under normal operation con***ions and in the presence of uncertainty and disturbances.
The project involves both fundamental research and more application-oriented research in which the methods developed in the project are applied to case studies and benchmarks provided by the industrial partners.

    PhD Student: Mixed-Integer Optimization
Delft, (Zuid-Holland), 38 hours per week Delft University of Technology

    Job description
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The optimization group is seeking a PhD student for the topic "Mixed-integer optimization: Unification of polyhedral combinatorics and lattice basis reduction algorithms" financed by The Netherlands
    Organization for Scientific Research (NWO).
Brief project description: Algorithms based on polyhedral knowledge are used in all academic and commercial software. When the variables are allowed to take integer values other than just 0 and 1, and when continuous variables are added in ad***ion, much less is understood. An algorithm by H.W. Lenstra answered many questions from a theoretical viewpoint. Until recently this algorithm seemed to have less practical value. The main goal of this project is to translate the knowledge gained by reformulating the problem as Lenstra does into polyhedral information. This should lead to better understanding and facilitate the resolution of the problems, resulting in a significant practical impact.
    Requirements
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PhD vacancy at INSA de Lyon LaMCoS, Multi physics & multi phase modeling in lubrication
    Host laboratory
LaMCoS - Laboratoire de Mécanique des Contacts et des Structures, TMI group
    INSA-Lyon, CNRS UMR5259, http://lamcos.insa-lyon.fr
    Context
Lubrication of machine elements represents nowadays important environmental, economical and technical issues. Minimization of friction losses (environmental and economical aspects) and film thickness reduction (technical aspect) in lubricated devices lead to new operating con***ions and among them the early lubricating film breakdown or the presence of multi phase flow. The work conducted in our group so far showed the interest in developing multi physic models[1]. However the initial numerical approach should be left and a new modeling strategy is to be developed. SKF - Engineering & Research Centre (based in the Netherlands) supports this research activity since the early phase in 2005. In ad***ion of its financial contribution, the company also provides a part time visiting professor.
    Subject
We propose to develop a new numerical approach of lubricated contact modeling based on the finite elements method. This approach requires both the coupling between several equations (Reynolds (a simplified form of the fluid dynamics), Elasticity, Energy and those describing the physical behavior of the fluid) and the implementation of efficient numerical methods.
Among the cases to deal with, the coupling between the exit part of a contact (where the fluid film rupture occurs) and the inlet zone of the following contact offers the challenge of the entrainment of a gaseous phase to be modeled. Furthermore, the simultaneous resolution of thin film mechanics and fluid thermodynamics equations could bring supplementary numerical difficulties.
The overall objective is to develop new numerical tools and to obtain qualitative validation from tests performed on in-house devices and conducted in collaboration with our technical staff.
    Supervisors
    P. Vergne, Directeur de Recherche CNRS, LaMCoS, INSA de Lyon
    D. Eyheramendy, Professor, Ecole Centrale de Marseille, Laboratoire de Mécanique et dAcoustique
    Profile
The candidate should have strong elementary formation in mechanical / numerical engineering with some background in Tribology and Thermodynamics, must be independent and pro-active in generating ideas and hypotheses. A previous experience in programming numerical methods and algorithms would be appreciated. Good knowledge and communication skills in the English language are highly desired. The candidate should be graduated at the Master level at the start of the thesis, planed in early October 2008.
    Application
An interview of the candidates will be organized at LaMCoS.
