    Istituto Dalle Molle di Studi sull''Intelligenza Artificiale (IDSIA, www.idsia.ch) invites applications for a PhD student position at University of Lugano Faculty of Informatics (http://www.inf.unisi.ch/education/phd/).
    We are looking for an outstanding Ph.D. student with excellent mathematical as well as computer programming (e.g., C, C++, Java) skills. In order to be admitted, the applicant must have completed a Master degree in computer science, informatics, or a closely related field prior to joining the program. We are currently particularly interested in candidates for the following areas:
    Theoretical and experimental understanding of heuristic methods (like tabu search, simulated annealing, Ants Algorithms, etc..)
    Stochastic vehicle routing problems
    Objective function estimated by sampling or simulation.
    The position is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation ( www.snf.ch). The initial appointment will be for 3 years, with possible prolongations. The salary is for the first year 38,400 CHF (Swiss Francs) for the second year 41,400 CHF and for the third year 44,4000 CHF, low taxes. No teaching is required. There is travel funding in case of papers accepted at important conferences. The official language at IDSIA is English. The position is suitable for students no older than 35 years.

    The Colour and Texture Group of the Computer Vision Centre (CVC) at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB, Spain) is offering a 3 years PhD studentship. The work will be within the general framework of Computational Colour Vision and will involve perceptual experiments with human subjects.
    The Colour and Texture Group offers a well funded, amicable and very creative environment not far from Barcelona city in Spain. Its main work is related to computational colour and texture representations. We focus on the basis of colour and texture perception in order to automatise the task of labelling the colours and the textures within an image (e.g. automatic image annotation, colour assessment of textured surfaces, illuminant estimation, etc).
    The CVC is located inside the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona campus in Bellaterra (beautiful land), some 15 Km (and a 30 min train ride) away from Barcelona city centre. The campus provides a diverse and stimulating scientific environment while the city provides an infinite cultural offer (Barcelona City with its beach and nearly perfect whether is usually voted by travel journalists as one of the most exciting cities in the world and lives up to its reputation).
    Salary is around ,16,000 gross per year during the first year and around ,22,000 gross per year during the last two years. This research grant is funded by the European Union through its CONSOLIDER-INGENIO 2010. The starting date for this position is September 2008.
    Academic requirements that the candidate must hold:
    a good first degree in computer science, electrical engineering, physics, experimental psychology, applied mathematics or related area.
    a masters degree (to be able to complete the official UAB doctorate in three years instead of the usual four) in a related area.
    Skills:
    strong programming skills (Matlab, Delphi, C, etc.)
    good communications skills and fluency, both written and oral in English is also a plus.

    Research Background
    Research in the silicon industry is maturated considerably. Now inkjet technology is being utilized for developing cheaper and accurate digital devices. Semiconductor giants like Samsung and Hynix are investing huge money in to the electronic printing system. Our research group is carrying research in printed electronics which will be the preferred manufacturing process for RFIDs, flexible panel systems, displays, and sensors in future.
    Research Area for PhD Studentship Material Science Engineer
    Studying nano-materials, nano-physics and nano-device applications with respect to electrostatic inkjet printing. Study of the polymer based thin films, substrate property, chemical properties of ink and role of nano particles in electrostatic printing will be of main focus of research. Knowledge of laser technology for printing systems, curing method and emerging technologies in printed electronics will be of added advantage.
    Research Area for PhD Studentship Mechanical Engineer
    Designing of multi-nozzle inkjet system for printed electronics which will include flow regulators, pumping system and control sensors. In ad***ion to this the students is required to perform numerous experiments for the evaluation of proposed printing method. Strong background in controls and micro-fabrication is necessary.
    Research Area for PhD Studentship Electronics Engineer
    Control of the multinozzle mechanism and control of the substrate with respect to the printing parameters to print different types of electronic devices through Electrostatic Inkjet Printing System. Knowledge of the programming language and machine interface is necessary.
    Research Area for MS Studentship Computer Engineer
    Strong knowledge of C++ and MFC programming is required. The person will be working on the integration of the systems and real-time control.

    PhD position in Apple-CORE project

    Job description

    This is a full-time, paid position, funded by the EU project Apple-CORE and promoted by Prof. Jesshope, head of the CSA group and coordinator of that project. This is one of a number of funded projects in this successful group helping to develop the next generation of computer systems, which will surpass the current trend for multi-core chips and bring about a revolution in many core CPUs. CSA is working on both simulators and soft-core prototypes of its microthreaded processor designs and is also working on compilers and operating systems within the Apple-CORE project. The goal is to build many-core chips with thousands, maybe tens of thousands of microthreaded processors, that can execute existing binary code and which will run legacy operating systems. This is a demanding and exciting challenge.
    Tasks:
    The successful applicant will work on a parallelising compiler in conjunction with our Greek partner in the Apple-CORE project within a well-motivated team at Amsterdam. He or she will be expected to travel for collaboration and to present results at conferences. It is expected that the appointment will lead to a PhD thesis.
