The VU University Amsterdam is one of the leading institutions for higher education in Europe. It is part of international science networks and collaborates with many major universities throughout the world. The Faculty of Sciences consists of four departments, with 650 employees including researchers, lecturers, full- and part-time professors. The group of Computer Systems has a vacancy for a Ph.D. Position.
    Summary
The Ph.D. candidate carries out research in the MINIX 3 research project. This project has several funding sources, including NWO and the KNAW grant to Prof, A.S. Tanenbaum as an Academy Professor. The research goal of the project is to determine how to produce an operating system with much better reliability and security than current operating systems. This Ph.D. position will focus on file systems. Current file systems are all basically derivatives of the MULTICS file system dating back to 1965. Since then a lot has changed in how computers are used but file systems have not kept paced. We want to investigate issues such as provenance, longevity, naming, and other issues that relate to how files are now used.
The Ph.D. will be a member of the Computer Systems group. Furthermore, the Ph.D. will be working in The Advanced School for Computing and Imagine. This is a multi-university research organization
in which over 200 researchers from all over the Netherlands participate.

Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, has been a renowned cultural, scientific and commercial centre for many centuries. It was here, in 1880, that the VU University Amsterdam first opened its doors to students. VU stands for ''Vrije Universiteit'' (dutch), which means ''Free University''. Here, ''free'' refers to freedom of state and church interference. Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam was established in 1880 by orthodox protestants. Nowadays it aims to be inspiring, innovative and involved.
Throughout the past century, the university has continued to expand. It now comprises twelve faculties and has teaching facilities for 18,000 students.

Description The open position is for a research assistantship in a PhD program in computer science with a focus on interactive 3D computer graphics and scientific visualization in general, and specifically on parallel rendering systems. The research project addresses the development of load-balancing strategies for scalable (cluster) parallel rendering. In particular, the research is focused on the analysis and development of an effective practical load-balancing mechanism that dynamically adapts to the varying rendering load that occurs during interactive parallel rendering. In cooperation with partners from industry and in scientific visualization, conceptual problems and implementation challenges are addressed.
The activities of this position not only include research and continuing education, but also support in teaching as well as administrative tasks. The main goal is to conduct excellent research generating results which are published and presented in top international journals and conferences, and eventually work towards achieving a PhD degree through the writing and defense of a dissertation thesis. This particular project ad***ionally has a focus on technology-transfer, thus the developed solutions are targeted for an industrial software product.

Education The prospective candidates have an excellent background in computer science and systems (such as operating systems and networks) as well as strong mathematical skills and practical experience with computer graphics.
A MSc degree in computer science or closely related area from a research university is required to enter the PhD program of UZH.

    Job description
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The aim of the HaCDAIS project is aimed at the development of a unifying framework and corresponding data mining techniques for handling concept drift in AIS. The project is subsidized by the Dutch National Science Foundation (NWO).
    Brief Project Summary:
One of the main goals in Adaptive Information Systems (AIS) is to serve the information need of users by adaptively filtering content based on the users" interests, knowledge, background, goals and tasks. User Modeling is an active research area that studies how a machine can learn, model and make use of a representation of the users" state of mind (and other factors). An AIS only has partial information about the users as it can only observe their behavior. The AIS is thus performing user modeling under the presence of (many) hidden contexts.
In this project we deal specifically with the problem of detecting changes in the goals or interests of users, which corresponds to the problem of concept drift (CD) in Data Mining (DM) and Machine Learning (ML). Modern DM/ML techniques that address CD have so far had only modest success in real AIS applications. We believe that this is mainly due to the fact that the state-of-the-art ML approaches do not fully take into account several factors which the UM community is aware of:
the development of the scope of user-interests
the hierarchical nature and rich semantics of information content, and existence and evolution of the user social networks.
His project is aimed at development of a unifying framework and corresponding DM techniques for handling CD in AIS, evaluation of the framework and techniques, first through various simulation studies, and through integration of the techniques with existing AIS for the external validation of our work.
