Amsterdam, 1081, (Noord-Holland), VU University Amsterdam

    Job description
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The VU University Amsterdam is one of the leading institutions for higher education in Europe. It is part of international science networks and collaborates with many major universities throughout the world. The Faculty of Sciences consists of four departments, with 650 employees including researchers, lecturers, full- and part-time professors. The group of Computer Systems has a vacancy for a Ph.D. Position.
    Summary
The Ph.D. candidate carries out research in the MINIX 3 research project. This project has several funding sources, including NWO and the KNAW grant to Prof, A.S. Tanenbaum as an Academy Professor. The research goal of the project is to determine how to produce an operating system with much better reliability and security than current operating systems. This Ph.D. position will focus on file systems. Current file systems are all basically derivatives of the MULTICS file system dating back to 1965. Since then a lot has changed in how computers are used but file systems have not kept paced. We want to investigate issues such as provenance, longevity, naming, and other issues that relate to how files are now used.
The Ph.D. will be a member of the Computer Systems group. Furthermore, the Ph.D. will be working in The Advanced School for Computing and Imagine. This is a multi-university research organization
in which over 200 researchers from all over the Netherlands participate.

Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, has been a renowned cultural, scientific and commercial centre for many centuries. It was here, in 1880, that the VU University Amsterdam first opened its doors to students. VU stands for ''Vrije Universiteit'' (dutch), which means ''Free University''. Here, ''free'' refers to freedom of state and church interference. Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam was established in 1880 by orthodox protestants. Nowadays it aims to be inspiring, innovative and involved.
Throughout the past century, the university has continued to expand. It now comprises twelve faculties and has teaching facilities for 18,000 students.

One Ph.D. research assistantship at the Department of Computer Science is
available starting Fall 2008 for research in concurrent program testing
    and verification.
The project is funded by the US National Science Foundation. It
involves collaborations with researchers at EECS, University of Michigan.
Project title: Trace-Driven Verification of Multithreaded Software.
    Project Summary:
The ever increasing use of hyper-threading and the availability of
inexpensive multiprocessor hardware present tremendous opportunities
as well as serious challenges for software developers. In order for
software applications to benefit from the continued exponential
throughput advances in multicore processors, the applications must be
well-written multithreaded software programs. Unfortunately, writing
multithreaded software programs that can unleash the full potential of
present and future hardware systems remains as challenging today as it
was thirty years ago. This research aims to develop practical tools and
methodologies that can bring down the complexity of testing/debugging
multithreaded programs to a level comparable to that of
    testing/debugging sequential programs.
    Requirement:
You will have a BS degree in Computer Science (MS preferred). Excellent
programming skill is required. Knowledge on formal verification, model
checking, and SAT/SMT solver is preferred.
Informal enquires about the position should be addresses to:
    Dr Zijiang (James) Yang,
    Department of Computer Science
    Western Michigan University
    zijiang.yang@wmich.edu

    (see http://www.cs.manchester.ac.uk/research/groups/ for an overview
of the research activities of the School). Two of the studentships,
in particular, must relate to research in areas of interest to the
    Medical Research Council (http://www.mrc.ac.uk/)
If you are interested, you are encouraged to approach potential
supervisors and suggest a possible PhD topic. A list of members
of the academic staff with their research interests is available from:
