Ph.D. position: SaS in e-Government - University of Groningen, The Netherlands
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Project description:
In a Software as Service (SaS) approach, a provider can realize and maintain business processes efficiently, that can be used by different consumers. The SAS-LEG project aims to offer a software engineering approach to build and maintain SaS platforms in the domain of local e-Government, emphasizing on offering powerful configuration possibilities. This process will leverage a number of disciplines and technologies:
    - Model-driven development at the business, architecture and services level.
    - Variability management to handle configuration at the three aforementioned levels.
    - Quality-driven architecting to ensure the satisfaction of critical Quality Attributes.
    - Powerful run-time reconfiguration techniques.
A pilot in the application of health care for local e-Government in the Netherlands will be the testbed for the technologies developed in the project. PhD Posn: Generalization for Portrayal in Web and Wireless Mapping
Company University of Zurich, Department of Geography, GIS Division
Workplace University of Zurich, Irchel Campus
Description The Geographic Information Systems unit at the Department of Geography, University of Zurich invites applications for two Doctoral Research Assistant Positions to work on a Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) grant focusing on the development of novel techniques for multiple representation databases (MRDBs) and real-time map generation in support of mobile geoservices. The successful applicants will be based in Zurich and jointly supervised on their PhD research by Prof. Robert Weibel and Dr. Dirk Burghardt.
The project will build on highly successful previous work and be organized in two PhD theses that are closely linked. One PhD project will seek to develop new MRDB data models capable of accommodating highly heterogeneous data derived, among others, with Web 2.0 applications; and new methods for model generalization to harmonize and integrate heterogeneous datasets. The second PhD project will study how generalization operations for web and mobile devices can be made sufficiently efficient so that the information portrayal can take place in real-time, and so that the scale and content of the map display can be flexibly and instantaneously adapted to the information requests and the context of a mobile user. For further details of the proposed research see http://www.geo.uzh.ch/~weibel/genw2_summary.pdf . Information about our research group can be found at http://www.geo.uzh.ch/gis. A clear set of research goals are iden-tified in the full project proposal, but the successful candidate will be expected to de-velop and refine these throughout the project.

Education Applicants are required to have successfully completed a Masters level degree in a rele-vant area such as GIScience/GIS, Geomatics, Computer Science, Maths, Physics, or Computational Geography. Familiarity with digital cartography or computational ge-ometry and solid programming experience will be an advantage. You will have a good standard of written and spoken English; knowledge of German, whilst not required, would be an advantage.
Send Curriculum Vitae, a motivation statement, transcripts, and contact details for two referees (including e-mail addresses) in a single PDF document to and . We will also be happy to answer informal inquiries. Review of applications will begin on 5 June 2008 and continue until positions are filled.
