Ph.D. positions in Interactive Media
IDIAP Research Institute, which is part of the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne EPFL doctoral school, is seeking candidates for Ph.D. student positions in Interactive Media.
We are interested in developing and integrating interactive computer vision and multimedia signal processing techniques in novel human-centered applications for creativity. For example, by integrating multimodal input from different sensors (audio, visual, metadata, etc.) and multimedia processing (e.g., automatic speech recognition, recognition of actions from camera input, etc.) considering cognitive, cultural, and social issues to create new media content, interfaces, and applications. A special focus will be placed on the integration of ideas and processes from the arts and other disciplines (e.g., cognitive psychology, social studies, etc.) in technical frameworks, as well as on implementing working systems (interactive artworks, or domain-specific applications). Possible topics include the following: interacting with and creating media collections in fixed and mobile settings, novel interfaces for media expression (e.g., for creating music, video, etc.), sonification and locative-media, applications for personal media management and creativity (e.g., photo, video, audio collections; tools for browsing, summarizing, storytelling, etc.).
The successful candidate will have a Masters degree in Media Arts, Engineering, Computer Science or a related field, and proven skills in designing and developing interactive computer systems or artworks (Java, Max/MSP/Jitter, Processing, open source, etc.), as well as the desire to collaborate in an interdisciplinary team. Experience at the intersection of arts and technology is desired, but not a requirement. However, preference will be given to applicants with a background in and/or research commitment to both technical and humanistic disciplines since this research falls under the umbrella of human-centered computing.
Positions are open immediately, with competitive salaries. IDIAP is located in Martigny, a scenic region in the south of Switzerland near the borders with France and Italy, surrounded by the highest mountains of Europe and offering exciting recreational activities, including hiking, climbing and skiing. It is close to Montreux, Lausanne, and Geneva, making it one of Eurpe''s most central and culturaly active locations. Although Martigny is in the French speaking part of Switzerland, at IDIAP the working language is English. Free French lessons are provided.

Em thì chưa aplly được mà bác cứ post lên làm em thèm
Mà bác quyet định làm phd ở đâu chưa? chắc bác vẫn thích ở lại lục địa già này nhỉ?

Năm 2007-2008 thì tôi không kịp rồi, do đó có lẽ sẽ apply cùng thời gian với bác đó. Có điều chắc chắn là khi apply tôi sẽ thiên về chọn ngành, thầy, rồi mới đến danh tiếng của trường. Bạn của tôi sang US rốt cuộc lại được 2 thầy 1 Ấn, 1 trung Quốc hướng dẫn, mặc dù trường danh tiếng nhưng như thế thì cũng chán.

Thế thì mình có dịp cùng chuẩn bị hồ sơ rồi, tôi cũng ko hiểu lắm về các thầy châu Á, đặc biệt nếu thầy Vietnam thì sao nhỉ?
Cái này tôi nghĩ cũng rất khó so sánh.

Nhiều thầy người châu Á có lẽ làm khoa học không được trung thực, đọc các bài của họ có cảm giác họ cố làm để đếm số bài báo, còn kết quả thì đôi khi chỉ là một phát hiện nhỏ, không biết là có đúng với tất cả các trường hợp hay không, hay chỉ là lựa chọn số liệu phù hợp.
Tôi thấy dù sao người châu Âu làm khoa học vẫn tốt hơn, gần đây người Nga không hứng thú làm khoa học vì không có tiền, nhưng trước đây một số GS NGa làm khoa học tận tuỵ và trung thực lắm, số public của họ chỉ đếm trên đầu ngón tay, nhưng cái nào ra cái nấy, đứng trên tầm cao mà nhìn chứ không nhỏ nhặt, thấy như thế mới sinh ra hàng loạt nghiên cứu sinh giỏi được.
Tất nhiên cái gì cũng có ngoại lệ, Torence Tao là " tàu" đấy nhưng lại là GS trẻ tuổi và giỏi toán nhất tại thời điểm này.
