We are inviting applications for a 4-year Ph.D. position.
The PhD student may work on a variety of topics in the intersection of learning theory, (theoretical) statistics and information theory; specific topics are listed at the end of this email. We are looking for truly excellent people who are capable of doing theoretical research.
The information-theoretic learning group is headed by P. Grunwald, author of the recent book ''The Minimum Description Length Principle'' (MIT Press 2007). We now have 3 Ph.D. students and one postdoc. The group is part of a larger research unit, which includes world-class researchers in the area of Kolmogorov complexity (P. Vitanyi) and quantum computing (H. Buhrman). We can offer an
excellent working environment: the CWI is located in the beautiful city of Amsterdam, only a short distance from the city center.
