Việc xếp hạng các truờng Y theo rất chủ quan, student doctor network chỉ xếp hạng dựa theo phiếu bầu (vote) của các thành viên. Các truờng Y ở vùng Caribbean (Ross, SGU) thì làm sao so đuợc với các truờng Y châu Âu, nói chi đến tốt nhất thế giới, đơn giản là các truờng này chạy theo lợi nhuận (for-profit-organization).
Bằng y khoa bên Mỹ là tiến sỹ y khoa (doctor of medicine), danh xưng là BS, không hề có thạc sỹ, chuyên khoa I, II gì cả. Học ngắn nhất là BS gia đình (11 năm), cho đến BS phẫu thuật thần kinh (15 đến 16 năm).
Theo tôi biết thì có sv quốc tế học chuơng trình MD, nhưng rất hiếm và ít. Trung bình sau khi ra truờng thì các BS thiếu nỡ khoảng 200 ngàn. Một trong những ngành "hot" nhất bây giờ trong y là BS chuyên khoa tiết niệu (học 13 năm), ra truờng luơng khởi điểm là 450,000/ năm. Ngành bèo nhất bây giờ là BS nhi tổng quát (110,000/năm), 11 năm. Tuỳ theo tình hình cung cầu mà lên xuống.

Hừ, bây giờ tôi mới để ý thấy trường Y ở California lại nổi tiếng
nhất nước Mỹ, trong khi các trường đại học ở Tây và Nam nước Mỹ chẳng
có thứ hạng gì so với các trưỜng Đông Bắc Mỹ . Có thế tôi chỉ là một
con ếch trong một cái giếng nhỏ nên thấy thế chăng ?
Thêm một điều nữa, là sau khi có bằng của các trường đại học Y, học
sinh lại phải thi qua một kỳ thi nữa của tiểu bang để có được giấy
phép hành nghề. Chỉ 99% học sinh trai da trắng qua được kỳ thi này,
và tỷ lệ được giấy phép hành nghề của học sinh da đen gái chỉ có
98% thôi. Nếu suy nghĩ kỹ, thì 1% học sinh được giấy phép hành nghề năm nay là số học sinh đã trượt năm ngoái cũng nhảy vào thi cùng
thì trong 100 học sinh năm nay thi lấy giấy phép, sẽ có 2 thằng
trượt, còn con gái da đen thì sẽ có 3 cô trượt.

Chỉ tính các ngành Natural Sciences & Technology thì trong Top 5 Grad School ở Mỹ, West Coast bao giờ cũng có 3 anh chễm chệ là Cal Tech, Standford, & UC Berkeley, so găng với MIT & Harvard. Tính riêng từng ngành nhỏ dĩ nhiên sẽ có trồi sụt, nhưng tổng quát vẫn là 3 anh đó trong Top 5.
Ngoài ra, hệ thống UC System là hệ thống trường công tốt nhất nước Mỹ. Nói tới Biochemistry, hay tất tần tật những liên quan đến Công nghệ Sinh học, lúc nào cũng có mặt UC San Diego.

Mục đích học Y là gì? Nếu vì yêu nghề thì hãy học Y, nhất là học Y ở Mỹ. Nếu học Y chỉ vì danh vọng và tiền thì hãy thương bản thân mình và thương những bệnh nhân tương lai mà chọn nghề khác. Học Y ở Mỹ phải hy sinh bản thân và gia đình rất nhiều. Tiền lương sau hơn 10 năm học hành trên mặt bằng chung tuy cao nhưng tính theo giờ thì chỉ là trung bình.
Bảng xếp hạng phần lớn dựa theo tiêu chí ngân sách dành cho nghiên cứu. Harvard, Stanford, Hopkins, Yale, U of Washington at St. Louis, UCSF, U Penn v.v. có ngân sách tài trợ cho nghiên cứu rất lớn nên luôn đứng đầu. Nếu thật sự yêu nghề Y thì ở Mỹ học trường nào cũng thế. Có bằng MD ở Mỹ, qua được residency, khi hành nghề không ai hỏi học ở trường nào ra. Nếu đi theo ngành acedemia (sư phạm?) thì tên tuổi của trường may ra có tí tẹo ấn tượng. Nếu muốn làm practitioner (bác sĩ tiếp xúc bệnh nhân), đặc biệt thì ngoại khoa, thì tên tuổi của residency program quan trọng gấp nhiều lần tên trường học.
Trường Y ở Mỹ thường không nhận học sinh du học, đặc biệt là từ VN. Nếu là du học sinh thì hoc sinh đấy phải học xong 4 năm đại học ở Mỹ. Học Y ở VN xong rồi nộp đơn vào residency program ở Mỹ cũng được, nhưng điểm thi USMLE 1, 2 phải thật cao (trường hợp này thì highly impossible). Tốt nhất là sang Mỹ học đại học. Tiền bạc không thành vấn đề mà hỉ

Đông Nam có Emory, U of Florida, U of Alabama at Birmingham. Miền Nam có UNC, Duke, Wake, UVA. Trung Tây có Chicago, Northwestern, Case Western. California có không ít trường Y giỏi. Hệ thống trường công U of California nói chung tốt nhất Mỹ nhưng rất "địa phương chủ nghĩa." Người Mỹ ở bang khác muốn vào hệ thống Y khoa của các trường UC rất khó. Du học sinh thì miễn bàn.
