Gerard Houllier believes the future is bright for Liverpool Football Club despite the fact that he's unable to compete with his major rivals in the transfer market.

While the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea are expected to lay out vast sums of money to strengthen their squads during the summer Houllier has been quietly going about his business at the opposite end of the market.

Since taking sole charge of the team Houllier has overseen a gradual progression in the Reds' fortunes each year. Last season Liverpool claimed their highest ever Premiership finish and the boss has every confidence that with the current crop of players he has at his disposal, plus the new faces he will bring in, this progression will continue.

He says: "Money doesn't mean everything in football. I know Manchester United and Arsenal will spend to improve, and Chelsea for that matter, but we have to think differently if we are to go forward again. And we will do it.

"My riches are already in my team. Half of the team are under 24, many are going to the World Cup and there would have been more but for injury. These players will develop. They have progressed this season.

"When you don't have the same amount of money to spend, you just need to be clever when you buy, which is what I've always tried to be with players like Sami Hyypia and Stephane Henchoz. Even last summer, not many people had heard of John Arne Riise.

"To be clever is to be on the go all the time. Nicolas Anelka was a good signing, that proved a good move for us. That's how I spent my Christmas!

"We have already signed Bruno Cheyrou, he's a skilful player who will do well for us, and we are also close to signing the captain of the Senegal World Cup team, Salif Diao, a strong guy.

"Then we've got the two young French players arriving the season after next. No-one knew Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Anthony Le Tallec when we signed them, but after the World Under-17 Championships everyone want ed them. Too late.
