Very nice topic for April Fool''s Day! :-)
This topic reminds me of a hairy instance when I had to
choose to lie or not to lie.
Because of a minor conflict, my (then) girlfriend and a mutual female
friend of ours had an argument, which left my ex very angry.
This friend was a really nice girl, and everybody in our circle
respected her! I was pretty sure my ex knew that this girl was a nice
person, but she didn''t like the poor girl anyway. Perhaps, it''s a
women''s thing. Or perhaps, it''s the fact that I was quite close to
    this girl.
When my ex and I were alone, she asked me if I thought the girl was
a bitch!!! I was momentarily taken off guard! Should I choose to tell
the truth and risk pissing off my girlfriend even more? Or should I
choose to lie and betray my own standing?
After a deliberate and overtly uncomfortable pause, I replied with a
straight face: "Yes, I absolutely think this girl is a f**king, bloody,
    bitchy bitch!!!"
My ex stared at me in complete bewilderment! And then she broke
out laughing; I laughed with her too. She''s visibly more at ease
and did not push the matter any further. The day after, she
apologized to me for putting me in a difficult situation. (But she
still didn''t like the poor girl. Well, something will never change!)
    Geez... that was hairy! :-)

    On learning English
A lot of people in HYEC have asked me to share my experience in
learning English. My answer is almost always the same: ?oYou need
to read a lot!? The complaint after hearing this advice is also almost
always the same: ?oI tried, but it?Ts so hard, and boring!?
Yes, it?Ts quite tough at first when your vocabulary is still limited. But,
who says reading has to be boring? You can choose what you read,
can?Tt you? You can choose to read about architecture if you?Tre an
architect, about cool new gadgets if you?Tre an on-the-edge geek, or
about bags, shoes, and dresses if you are a fashion-crazed girl.
Read what fascinates you and it won?Tt be boring.
However, in order to enrich your vocabulary, sometimes you will also
need to venture out of your comfort zone: You have to regularly read
something out of your interest areas. If I did not, my entire vocabulary
would now consist of 0 and 1 (since I?Tm an IT guy).
Just kidding, but you get my drift!
In my experience, the best source of general reading is news (e.g.
Yahoo News, CNN, etc.). So instead of checking out vnexpress.net
(or whatever your favourite portal is) every morning, make it a habit to
    check out news.yahoo.com!
    Hindsights
Today, I would like to introduce a piece of general reading that I think
is very useful for final year students or young professionals. It is a
graduation speech given six times in various schools throughout the
US. It gave advices to young people on how to be happy, and
successful, and is aptly named ?oHindsights!? The author is Guy
Kawasaki, a successful entrepreneur, a prolific writer of many books
on business and entrepreneurship, and a happy father! This dude is
some kind of hero to me; he is always very inspiring and
    encouraging.
    Herê?Ts the speech:
    http://blog.guykawasaki.com/2006/01/hindsights.html
I like Kawasaki?Ts blog very much, and I make a habit to read his
articles as soon as they come out! Somewhere in his blog there is a
link to his excellent presentation named ?oArt of the Start.? This
presentation is a classic in public speaking and presentation skills.
It also offers valuable advices on how to start a business.
Enjoy your reading, and good luck!
