The topic about pronounciation was very useful, and I''ve learned quite a lot that day.
However, I am under the impression that many people, especially ones from Uni of Foreign languages, are relying to much on the dictionary. They consider it a sacred Bible. I think the dictionary alone is insufficient, because:
- Different areas may have different ways of pronouncing one word, and the the dictionary normally only lists one or two. And the pronounciation may also change a little - pron. of the same word now can be a little bit different from that of the past. You can see the pron. of many words listed in different dictionaries are not identical. Online dics, e.g www.m-w.com, usually have more updated and correct pron. than old book-formed ones.
- There are some subtle phonetic distinction that the dic cannot cover. For example, the /t/ sound has at least 4
allophones, and /t/ in "story" is different from /t/ in "truck" and is different from /t/ in "winter", .... Or the /ơ/ sound (pron. symbol looks like a 180degree-rotated letter e) is usually mixed with one of /e/, /a/, /i/, /u/.. sound and the difference is recognizable. I usually hear most VNese people (including myself - i''m changing it) speaking the word "to" with too much more aspirate than native ppl do.
- This is not I''m not so sure about, but I''m so used to hearing the word "apple" or "happy" with solid /a/ sound, in both AmE and BrE that I was very surprised to see its pron. in the dictionary as /ae/ sound. dunno why, but I''ll just keep on imitating what I heard ^.^ Some ppl please give me your oppinion about this /a/ or /ae/ thing in this case.
So I think listening a lot and carefully is always necessary. English pron. does not strictly follow any rules and you''ll have to learn it by remembering the pron. of each word, and the best way is to listen a lot. Intensive listening can make your English sound naturally and natively, while the dictionary with its pronouciation symbols cannot.

Từ tháng 7- 2007 , HYEC bắt đầu làm thẻ thành viên và thu phí thành viên với mức phí tối thiểu như sau :
- Sinh viên : 15.000 VNĐ /tháng
- Những người đi làm : 20.000/ tháng
Với visitor : 5000/buổi
Những bạn đăng kí thành viên thì sẽ có thẻ thành viên HYEC.
( Mức maximum ko được quy định vì điều đó tùy thuộc vào mỗi thành viên của HYEC ) .
HYEC thu phí thành viên ko nhằm mục đích nào khác ngoài việc chi trả các chi phí thường xuyên ( tiền phòng, tiền in và photo topic, tiền mua các dụng cụ phục vụ cho topic như đất nặn, giấy màu.v.v.., tiền tổ chức các sự kiện như Trung thu, 8-3.v.v..) để nâng cao hơn nữa chất lượng các chương trình của HYEC.
