Easter, also called Pascha, is the most important religious feast in the Christian liturgical year.[1] It celebrates the resurrection of Jesus, which Christians believe occurred on the third day after his crucifixion around AD 33. Many non-religious cultural elements have become part of the holiday, and those aspects are often celebrated by many Christians and non-Christians alike.
Easter and the holidays that are related to it are moveable feasts, in that they do not fall on a fixed date in the Gregorian or Julian calendars (both of which follow the cycle of the sun and the seasons). Instead, the date for Easter is determined on a lunisolar calendar, as is the Hebrew calendar.
In Western Christianity, Easter always falls on a Sunday between March 22 and April 25 inclusively.[15] The following day, Easter Monday, is a legal holiday in many countries with predominantly Christian tra***ions. In the Julian calendar used by Eastern Christianity, Easter also always falls on a Sunday from March 22 to April 25 inclusive, which in the Gregorian calendar, due to the 13 day difference between the calendars between 1900 and 2099, are dates from April 4 to May 8 inclusive.
Non-religious Easter tra***ions
As with many other Christian dates, the celebration of Easter extends beyond the church. Since its origins, it has been a time of celebration and feasting. Today it is commercially important, seeing wide sales of greeting cards and confectionery such as chocolate Easter eggs, marshmallow bunnies, Peeps, and jelly beans.
Despite the religious preeminence of Easter, in many tra***ionally Catholic or Protestant countries Christmas is now a more prominent event in the calendar year, being unrivaled as a festive season, commercial opportunity, and time of family gathering â?" even for those of no or only nominal faith. Easter''s relatively modest secular observances place it a distant second or third among the less religiously inclined where Christmas is so prominent.

Easter eggs are specially decorated eggs given to celebrate the Easter holiday or springtime. The oldest tra***ion is to use dyed and painted chicken eggs, but a modern custom is *****bstitute chocolate eggs, or plastic eggs filled with confectionery such as jellybeans. These eggs are often hidden, supposedly by the Easter Bunny, for children to find on Easter morning.
Claims are made that Easter eggs were originally pagan symbols, however as with most European pagan religion, the evidence for this is sketchy. One source of information on Eostre, a pagan goddess who may have given her name to the festival, does not mention eggs at all. [1]. It is, however, the more accepted historical line that Eostre was associated with eggs and Hares. [2]. There are also good grounds for the association between Hares (later termed Easter bunnies) and eggs, through folklore confusion between Hares forms (where they raise their young) and Plovers nests. [3] In the 18th Century Jakob Grimm theorised a pagan connection to Easter eggs, with a putative goddess of his own who he named Ostara, a suggested German version of Eostre.
