The end of the year 2008 is coming so close. We would like to send to you our best regards and wishes for a new year to come.
We would like to introduce ourselves: SJ Vietnam is an independent Vietnamese Branch of SJ France (Solidarités Jeunesses French) which was set up in 2004 in Vietnam by Vietnamese and the United Nations volunteers. SJ Vietnam is a full member of CCIVS (UNESCO) and NVDA, a partner of YAP and ALLIANCE.
Through volunteering activities, we promote values of solidarity, peace, tolerance of citizens. SJ Vietnam is an independent, non-political and non-religious organization open to everybody without any distinction of nationality, race, philosophy, financial resource, education and ***.
In 2008, SJ Vietnam had organized 2 international volunteers?T camps in Vietnam: (1) ART DIEM is an art performing project involving 30 international volunteers and 100 Vietnamese volunteers from Hanoi & Hai Duong; (2) World Heritage Volunteers supported by UNESCO involved 17 international volunteers & 7 Vietnamese Volunteers in Ha Long. These achievements were from the support of Vietnamese and international volunteers, companies and organizations.
Christmas of love sharing will be in this December, a special camp of sharing love and helping the disadvantaged children to enjoy Christmas and New Year Eve 2009.
We would appreciate all of your support in celebrating and organizing special events of love sharing and bringing faith in the future to the children and even among us.

CHRISTMAS AND NEWYEAR WORKCAMP
Christmas and New Year are special holidays in many countries in the world. Families are always happy to celebrate these holidays which bring hope and strengthen relationships. In Vietnam, there are still a lot of disadvantaged children, disabled children and orphans as well as disadvantaged elder people who don?Tt have family *****pport them and a warm holiday in love.
This year our work-camp will take place in the Fisher Village (Long Bien districts, Hanoi), the Peaceful Village (Hai Ba Trung districts, Hanoi) and the Vinh Phuc welfare center (Vinh Phuc) to organize the Christmas and New Year celebration and to offer gifts to disadvantaged children, orphans, disabled children, and disadvantaged elder people in these places.
The workcamp?Ts message ?oWarm heart, warm Christmas? comes from a Danish fairy tale written by Hans Christian Andersen: "The Little Match Girl".
On New Year''s Eve the Little Match Girl lights all her matches to keep her warm. In the light of the burning matches, happy visions appear to her... a warm stove, a Christmas goose, a Christmas tree and finally, her grandmother. But they are only visions, and when the light from the last match is gone, the Little Match Girl lies frozen in the snow. We understand and see the misery and beauty surrounding the child as she leaves this world. The story points out what is underneath the poverty and hunger and the fact that there are people who lack love and attention. ?oBy paying attention to people and showing your concern you will warm their hearts.?
In this story reveals that there are lonely and disadvantaged children living in the street during winter time. If the little match girl could have received people?Ts attention her visions could have become true and she could have had a warm Christmas. Our workcamp purpose is to offer some of our time to provide disadvantaged people a warm atmosphere that is being seen in families during the Christmas period and New Year. We also want them to keep hope for a better future.

Where does the workcamp take place?
1. Fisher Village (Long Bien districts, Hanoi)
The Fisher Village is a very poor village where people live in floating houses on the Red river near the Long Bien bridge. Many of these families are single mothers, and divorced couples. Most of them are no longer in contact with their relatives. They came from the countryside and they cannot afford to travel back to their province.
There are about 50 disadvantaged children in this place who have hard living con***ions. Most of the children when they reach the age of 5 or 6 year olds have to help parents to earn money.

2. Peaceful Village (Hai Ba Trung districts, Hanoi):
The Peaceful Village is located in Hai Ba Trung districts and belongs to Hai Ba Trung. The People''s Committee was established in 1993. It is in charge of taking care of children and especially disadvantaged ones. Most of them are orphans or have their parents in jail.
In the campus of this centre their a board with the following message: ?oBy paying attention to people and showing your concern you will warm their hearts.?Recently, this village started to host 50 orphans and disadvantaged children. The children who live in this center are sent to school in this same district.

3. Vinh Phuc welfare center (Vinh Phuc)
Vinh Phuc welfare center is 60 km away from Hanoi. It belongs to Vinh Phuc Labour and Social Welfare Service. It was established 10 years ago and it is takes care of disadvantaged elder people and children, disabled people. In this center there are currently 40 members of the staffs taking care of 60 orphans, 30 disabled children, 10 new-born babies, 30 disadvantaged elder people. Such as the Peaceful Village, the children also live in this center and go to school.
Workcamp activities:
With the key message ?oWarm heart, warm Christmas? this work-camp hopes to foster relationship between people. And also to give people hope to the beautiful future. These activities are also base on the goals of SJ Vietnam that promotes the values of solidarity, peace, tolerance through young citizenship projects to improve society during and after the voluntarism.
During these two weeks, 10 local volunteers and 20 international volunteers will be divided into two groups: a Theatre Group and a Decoration Group to do the following activities:
1. Performance:
The Theatre Group will first work with the international and local volunteers. Then, school children from Hanoi will join the workshop to practice the play, the music and the songs. These children will have a basic English knowledge so they can participate to the play with local and international volunteers. After one week of workshop volunteers and school children will perform in Peaceful Village and Vinh Phuc welfare center to celebrate New year?T eve party.
The name of the play is the Christmas Star. It will help Vietnamese people to know more about the Western. We hope to give the children and elder people a memorable celebration with this play. The followings are a short extract from the beginning of the play and a brief summary of the story:
- ?oThe story we are about to tell took place many hundreds of years ago, but it has been told and retold more than any other story in the world. Because of it, millions of people all over the world celebrate a huge festival every year. This is the story of Christmas.?
- This is the story of Jesus?T birth in a small village called Bethlehem. The birth takes place in very simple circumstances: in a stable with animals around. An angel tells the Shepherds in the mountains about the special birth. A star will show them the way. The star is also seen by Wise men who decide to go and worship the baby.
2. Decoration:
The Decoration Group will make the decorations and then decorate the Fisher Village and the Peaceful Village as this is where we will celebrate Christmas Party. We want to make the children feel the Christmas atmosphere.
Another activity of this group will be to make the background, costumes and props for the performance.
3. Activities to interact:
We have activities to interact with children after decorating and before performing. We hope that through these activities the volunteers will get to know more about the orphans and disadvantaged children.
- The Time Capsule: ?~What are my wishes for next year??T
The children will write a letter to and for themselves. All the letters will be put in the time capsules and buried. Next Christmas, the children and the volunteers will open the time capsule. We hope through this activity to foster the relationships between SJ, the volunteers and the children.
- Games: Volunteers can think about games to play with the children. Here is a list with some examples: bag race, ?opull the rope? game, the bamboo dance, the cat & mouse, and play the tree.
- Drawing: The volunteers will help the children to draw what are their hopes for the future.
- Speeches contest: In the beginning of the work-camp one volunteer will give a topic to a group of 10 children in the Peaceful Village and in the Vinh Phuc welfare center. They can prepare it in one week, write and practice. The speech contest will take place in the day we come to do activities to interact. Through these activities the volunteers will get to know the children better.
4. The gifts: From the beginning of November local volunteers collect old clothes, toys, books, magazines and cakes from people living in Hanoi and sponsors. During the work-camp the volunteers will bring these gifts to the orphans, disadvantaged children and elderly people. We hope to provide them a beautiful Christmas with a lot of presents and joy!!!
Leisure and exchange activities
As you might know the aim of this work camp is not only to help poor people but it is also a chance to meet other volunteers from other countries, and to get to know local people. During your free time (evening and Sunday) the volunteers will have the opportunity to enjoy different activities and to show more about their life, family, country with pictures and games.

SJ Vietnam is a non-governmental organization, help bridging and creating opportunities for the youth to involve in the projects of improving the environment and community. Through these programs, SJ Vietnam wish to be a bridge between like minded people, the companies and organizations that are interested in social activities, helping the poor, disadvantaged children & old homeless people, etc.
In this project, we call for the support of the items mentioned below. Each of us, either an individual or an organization can contribute your effort in helping other people. In companion with other 10 Vietnamese and 20 international volunteers, we wish to bring a warm Christmas and New Year Eve to the poor people.
If you are an individual, you can contribute old clothes, magazines or toys for the children.
If you are a group of people from an organization, we would appreciate your contribution of milk, snack, magazines or a part of estimated expense for celebrating the events by organizing the performance and little parties for the children.

The estimated cost for the project is VND 50,000,000 (USD 2,890) for all the activities at Fisher Village, Peaceful Center & Vinh Phuc Welfare Center for the disadvantaged children and elder people. By the end of the project, our project leader will send a financial report, media report and the final evaluation of the project to all sponsors.

Năm 2008 sắp sửa khép lại, chúng tôi xin kính chúc công ty gặt hái được nhiều thành công hơn năm trước.
Trong năm qua, Solidarités Jeunesses Vietnam (SJ Vietnam) đã đạt được nhiều thành quả nhất định cũng là nhờ rất nhiều vào sự trợ giúp của các tình nguyện viên, các tổ chức, doanh nghiệp cũng như các đối tác trong và ngoài nước.
SJ Việt Nam là một tổ chức phi chính phủ của Pháp (Solidarités Jeunesses French) hoạt động từ năm 2004 tại Việt Nam do các tình nguyện viên (TNV) của Việt Nam và Liên hợp quốc sáng lập. Hiện nay, SJ Việt Nam đang là thành viên của CCIVS (thuộc UNESCO) và NVDA, đối tác của YAP và ALLIANCE. Thông qua các hoạt động tình nguyện, chúng tôi muốn nêu cao sự yêu chuộng hòa bình, tình đoàn kết, ý thức chủ động của công dân. Trong năm 2008, SJ Việt Nam đã có hơn 3000 TNV Việt Nam và 500 TNV Quốc tế tham gia vào các dự án ngắn hạn và dài hạn.
Trong năm 2008, SJ Việt Nam đã tổ chức thành công 2 trại tình nguyện Quốc tế tại Việt Nam: (1) Arte Diem là chương trình biểu diễn nghệ thuật với sự tham gia của 30 TNV quốc tế, 100 TNV Việt Nam tại Hà Nội và Hải Dương; (2) Bảo vệ di sản thế giới là chương trình được bảo trợ bởi UNESSCO với sự tham gia của 17 TNV quốc tế và 7 TNV Việt Nam tại vịnh Hạ Long. Giáng sinh trao yêu thương sẽ diễn ra vào tháng 12 tới đây, là chương trình đặc biệt trao sự ấm áp và tình yêu cho trẻ em thiệt thòi tại Việt Nam nhân dịp Giáng sinh và năm mới 2009.

Vậy cho mình hỏi một chút. Điểm khác biệt giữa Ielts và Toefl với. Hình như bây giờ thi Toefl khó hơn Ielts thì phải. Cũng muốn học Toefl vì muốn đi Mỹ quá, nhưng chẳng biết tình hình thế nào.

***IELTS:
Hệ thống kiểm tra tiếng Anh quốc tế'' (tiếng Anh: International English Language Testing System, viết tắt là IELTS, đọc là /?Tielts/) là một bài kiểm tra về sự thành thạo Anh ngữ. Nó được đồng điều hành bởi ba tổ chức ESOL của Đại học Cambridge (University of Cambridge ESOL), Hội đồng Anh (British Council) và tổ chức giáo dục IDP của Úc. Người thi có thể lựa chọn giữa hai hình thức: Academic (học thuật) hoặc General training module (đào tạo chung):
* Loại hình học thuật dành cho những ai muốn học ở bậc đại học hoặc các học viện, các hình thức đào tạo sau đại học.
* Loại hình đào tạo chung dành cho những ai muốn tham gia những khóa học nghề, muốn tìm việc làm, hoặc vì mục đích di cư.
IELTS được chấp nhận bởi phần lớn các học viện ở Australia, Anh, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand và Nam Phi, ngày càng nhiều các học viện ở Mĩ, và nhiều tổ chức nghề nghiệp. Nó cũng là một yêu cầu bắt buộc đối với việc di cư đến Australia và Canada.
Những tính chất đặc trưng của kì thi
Bài thi IELTS bao gồm những nét đặc trưng sau:
* Trong bài kiểm tra sẽ có nhiều kiểu giọng Anh của các nơi (Anh, Mĩ, Úc) để tránh sự phân biệt ngôn ngữ. Trong khi TOEFL chỉ bao gồm tiếng Anh của vùng Bắc Mĩ, IELTS luôn được công nhận là đáng tin cậy hơn TOEFL bởi một số cá nhân và tổ chức (đặc biệt là các tổ chức ngoài Mĩ), mặc dù nhìn bề ngoài thì TOEFL có bao gồm cả những bài thi nghe của giọng Anh và giọng Úc.
* IELTS kiểm tra khả năng nghe, đọc, viết và nói bằng tiếng Anh.
* Hai dạng bài thi có thể được lựa chọn 1: Học thuật và dạng đào tạo chung.
* Điểm sẽ được chấm cho từng kĩ năng nhỏ (nghe, đọc, viết, nói). Thang điểm từ 1 (không biết sử dụng ) đến 9 (sử dụng thông thạo).
Thang điểm:
Thang điểm: IELTS được đánh giá trên một thang điểm 9 cấp. Mỗi một mức điểm điểm ứng với từng trình độ khác nhau, trong đó có tính đến điểm 0.5 (Ví dụ như 6.5 hay 7.5). Một thang điểm 9 cấp độ được miêu tả gồm có:
9 Thông thạo:
Đã hoàn toàn nắm vững ngôn ngữ với một sự phù hợp, chính xác, lưu loát và thông hiểu hoàn toàn đầy đủ
8 Rất tốt
Hoàn toàn nắm vững ngôn ngữ, chỉ đôi khi mắc những lỗi như không chính xác, không phù hợp nhưng lỗi này chưa thành hệ thống. Trong những tình huống không quen thuộc có thể sẽ không hiểu. Sử dụng tốt với những chủ đề tranh luận phức tạp, tinh vi.
7 Tốt
Nắm vững ngôn ngữ, nhưng đôi khi có những sự không chính xác, không phù hợp, không hiểu trong một số tình huống. Nói chung là sử dụng tốt ngôn ngữ phức tạp và hiểu những lí lẽ tinh vi.
6 Thành thạo
Sử dụng ngôn ngữ tương đối hiệu quả tuy có những chỗ không chính xác, không phù hợp, không hiểu. Có thể sử dụng và hiểu tốt ngôn ngữ phức tạp, đặc biệt là trong những tình huống quen thuộc.
5 Bình thường
Sử dụng được một phần ngôn ngữ, nắm được nghĩa tổng quát trong phần lớn các tình huống, dù thường xuyên mắc lỗi. Có thể sử dụng ngôn ngữ trong những lĩnh vực riêng quen thuộc của mình.
4 Hạn chế
Có sự thành thạo cơ bản bị hạn chế trong những tình huống quen thuộc. Thường có khó khăn trong việc sử dụng ngôn ngữ phức tạp.
3 Cực kì hạn chế
Có thể nói và hiểu trong những tình huống rất quen thuộc. Thường thất bại trong giao tiếp.
2 Lúc được lúc không
Không có những giao tiếp thực sự ngoại trừ những thông tin cơ bản nhất với những từ ngữ riêng lẻ hoặc những cú pháp ngắn trong tình huống thông thường để đạt được mục đích tức thời. Khó khăn lớn trong việc nói và viết tiếng Anh.
1 Không biết sử dụng
Hoàn toàn không có khả năng sử dụng tiếng Anh ngoài vài từ riêng lẻ.
0 Bỏ thi
Không một thông tin nào để chấm bài. Người dự thi đã không thể tham dự kì thi.
Địa điểm và ngày thi
Có khoảng 300 trung tâm dự thi trên toàn thế giới. Số lượng thí sinh đã tăng từ khoảng 100000 năm 1999 lên nửa triệu người năm 2003. Ba quốc gia có nhiều thí sinh nhất năm 2003 là Đại lục Trung Quốc, Ấn Độ và Vương Quốc Anh cho kì thi học thuật và Ấn Độ, Đại lục Trung Quốc và Úc cho kì thi đào tạo chung.
Có lên đến 48 ngày thi hợp lệ trong một năm. Mỗi trung tâm tổ chức nhiều nhất là 4 kì thi mỗi tháng tùy nhu cầu từng địa phương.
***TOFLEđược đọc là toe-full hoặc toffle) là viết tắt của Test Of English as a Foreign Language. TOEFL là bài kiểm tra trình độ tiếng Anh (Mỹ). Bài kiểm tra này bao gồm các kĩ năng: nghe, nói, đọc, viết. TOEFL đánh giá kỹ năng hiểu và sử dụng tiếng Anh chuẩn Mỹ của một người có đạt đến trình độ có thể sử dụng ở bậc đại học. Điểm TOEFL thường được yêu cầu khi nhập học ở hầu hết các trường đại học và cao đẳng ở Mỹ. Điểm số TOEFL có giá trị trong 2 năm.
Bài thi TOEFL là thương hiệu bản quyền của Cơ quan khảo thí giáo dục (Mỹ) (Educational Testing Service - ETS) và được tổ chức trên toàn thế giới. Bài thi lần đầu được tổ chức vào năm 1964 và cho đến nay đã có gần 20 triệu thí sinh dự thi.
Các dạng thi TOEFL
TOEFL trên Internet (iBT)
Đây là bài thi TOEFL thế hệ mới, sử dụng Internet để chuyển đề thi từ ETS về đến trung tâm tổ chức thi. Kể từ khi được giới thiệu vào cuối năm 2005, TOEFL iBT đang từng bước thay thế hoàn toàn dạng thi trên giấy (PBT) và dạng thi trên máy tính (CBT). Kỳ thi đã được tổ chức ở các quốc gia Mỹ, Canada, Pháp, Đức và Ý vào năm 2005 và các quốc gia khác vào năm 2006.
Bài thi TOEFL kéo dài trong 4 giờ và gồm có 4 phần, đòi hỏi thí sinh phải sử dụng thành thạo 4 kỹ năng. Nội dung của bài thi tập trung vào việc sử dụng tiếng Anh trong môi trường đại học hoặc cao học. Trong khi làm bài thí sinh có thể ghi chú.
1. Nghe: khoảng 34-50 câu hỏi, kéo dài từ 50-90 phút.
Có hai hình thức của bài nghe: dạng bài thi dài và ngắn. Ở dạng thi dài, thí sinh sẽ phải nghe và trả lời câu hỏi cho 3 đoạn hội thoại và 6 bài giảng văn. Dạng thi ngắn gồm 2 đoạn hội thoại và 4 bài giảng.
Nội dung các bài nghe lấy trong bối cảnh của một trường đại học hay cao đẳng ở một nước nói tiếng Anh.
2. Nói: gồm 6 bài nói.
2 bài đầu là hình thức bài nói riêng (Independent Task) về một đề tài quen thuộc trong xã hội và sinh hoạt hằng ngày. Thí sinh có 45 giây để nói.
4 bài nói tiếp theo là bài nói tích hợp (Integrated Task). Thí sinh phải nghe một đoạn hội thoại hay một bài thuyết giảng và sau đó trả lời dựa theo câu hỏi đưa ra có liên quan đến đoạn hội thoại hay bài thuyết giảng. Ờ phần này, thí sinh có 60 giây để nói.
3. Đọc: cũng có hai hình thức là dài và ngắn.
Ở dạng dài, thí sinh sẽ trả lời câu hỏi về 5 bài đọc trích từ các sách giáo khoa của trường đại học hoặc cao đẳng ở Bắc Mỹ. Ở dạng ngắn, thí sinh phải trả lời câu hỏi về 3 bài đọc cũng có độ dài từ 700-750 từ nhưng với thời gian ngắn hơn là 60 phút (so với 100 phút của dạng dài).
4. Viết: gồm 2 bài viết.
Bài thứ nhất là dạng Integrated Task. Thí sinh phải đọc một đoạn văn sau đó nghe một bài thuyết giảng rồi tóm tắt lại và nêu mối quan hệ giữa đoạn văn và bài thuyết giảng. Bài viết phải vào khoảng 150-225 từ. Thí sinh có 20 phút để viết.
Bài thứ hai là dạng Independant Task về một đề tài trong xã hội. Bài viết phải vào khoảng 300-350 từ. Thí sinh có 35 phút để viết.
TOEFL trên máy tính (CBT)
TOEFL trên máy tính (CBT) được tổ chức đầu tiên vào ngày 30 tháng 9 năm 2006. Bài thi cũng được chia ra làm 4 phần : nghe, cầu trúc ngữ pháp, đọc hiểu và viết. Trong lúc làm bài thí sinh không được phép ghi chú.
1. Phần nghe (45-70 phút).
gồm 2 dạng: thí sinh sẽ nghe những đoạn đối thoại giữa 2 hoặc nhiều người trong lớp học hoặc trong trường đại học; hoặc những mẫu đối thoại giữa sinh viên với giảng viên. Các câu hỏi thường là dạng : ai, chủ đề của câu chuyện và ở đâu.
2. Phần ngữ pháp (15-20 phút).

*** Tuy nhiên IELTS hiện nay được chấp nhận rộng rãi hơn do việc thi cử diễn ra dễ dàng hơn ( làm trên giấy). Đối với nước Mỹ ( vốn được biết đến với hình thức thi TOFLE), nước này theo Thản biết hơn 2000 trường trên đất Mỹ chấp nhận IELTS rồi.Việc bạn muốn đi Mỹ thì hoàn toàn có thể take IELTS và sang đó như bình thường nhé.

VietNam Electricity (EVN) is the largest power company in Vietnam having an installed electricity generation capacity of 8,860 MW and a distribution network of 19,396 km. According to 2007 UNDP report on the 100 largest enterprises in Vietnam, EVN came in at 3rd position after Agribank and VNP.
In 2004 the company generated 40.9 TWh of electricity from 14 power plants as follows: hydropower plants 50.8 %, coal-fired power plants 13.6 %, gas turbine power plants 29.4 % and diesel fired power plants 6.2 %.
As everyone knows, EVN represents the case of monopoly since this company provides electricity to all the country.

Mouth Expressions: The Experience Left a Bad Taste in My Mouth
Now, the VOA Special English program, Words and Their Stories.
People use their mouths for many things. They eat, talk, shout and sing. They smile and they kiss. In the English language, there are many expressions using the word mouth. But some of them are not so nice.
For example, if you say bad things about a person, the person might protest and say ?oDo not bad mouth me.?
Sometimes, people say something to a friend or family member that they later regret because hurts that person?Ts feelings. Or they tell the person something they were not supposed to tell.
The speaker might say: ?oI really put my foot in my mouth this time.? If this should happen, the speaker might feel down in the mouth. In other words, he might feel sad for saying the wrong thing.
Another situation is when someone falsely claims another person said something. The other person might protest: ?oI did not say that. Do not put words in my mouth.?
Information is often spread through word of mouth. This is general communication between people, like friends talking to each other. ?oHow did you hear about that new movie?? someone might ask. ?oOh, by word of mouth.? A more official way of getting information is through a company or government mouthpiece. This is an official spokesperson. Government-run media could also be called a mouthpiece.
Sometimes when one person is speaking, he says the same thing that his friend was going to say. When this happens, the friend might say: ?oYou took the words right out of my mouth!? Sometimes a person has a bad or unpleasant experience with another person. He might say that experience ?oleft a bad taste in my mouth.? Or the person might have had a very frightening experience, like being chased by an angry dog. He might say: ?oI had my heart in my mouth.?
Some people have lots of money because they were born into a very rich family. There is an expression for this, too. You might say such a person, ?owas born with a silver spoon in his mouth.?
This rich person is the opposite of a person who lives from hand to mouth. This person is very poor and only has enough money for the most important things in life, like food.
Parents might sometimes withhold sweet food from a child as a form of punishment for saying bad things. For example, if a child says things she should not say to her parents, she might be described as a mouthy child. The parents might even tell the child to stop mouthing off.
But enough of all this talk. I have been running my mouth long enough.

Why should you use visual aids?
1. How we take in information during a presentation
Professor Albert Mehrabian did a lot of research into how we take in information during a presentation. He concluded that 55% of the information we take in is visual and only 7% is text.
There are some important conclusions that we can take in from this information
1. Use visuals (pictures, graphs, tables, props) whenever you can

If I said that I could double your chances of achieving your objectives in a presentation with just one piece of advice you would probably be very skeptical. And yet if you use visual images that is just what happens.
This study by Decker Communications showed that by using visuals in your presentation you could expect roughly to double the chance of achieving your objectives. And if you are trying to make a sales presentation or a job interview presentation, this piece of advice could have a major impact on your bank balance.

Rehearse your presentation and it will get better.
Sorry to sound like a bit of an old nag. It''s obvious - rehearsing - isn''t it? But it''s also a bit of a drag and one that is easy to forget. It is probably the most common mistake of all presentations that I have seen.
You wouldn''t dream of going to see a Shakespeare play at the RSC only to find that they hadn''t properly learnt the script. You wouldn''t dream of going to the opera to hear the band play out of time because they hadn''t got round to rehearsing properly. Yet in presentations and in speeches we see this happening all the time.
The impact of inadequate rehearsal on the audience
Rehearsing could make the difference between a good and an average presentation.
1. Plan to rehearse your presentation out loud at least 4 times.
We suggest that you should rehearse at least four times, and if you can get word perfect so much the better. I know that you haven''t got the time, but we have seen so many presentations that have been let down due to a lack of rehearsal.
Make sure that one of your rehearsals is in front of a really scary audience - family, friends, partners, colleagues; children. They will tell you quite plainly where you are going wrong - as well as providing you with the support that you need.
2. Rehearse against the clock
If you have to give a presentation in a short period of time then try to practice your presentation against the clock. This is particularly true with something like the five minute job presentation. You can add in parts from the script or take them out to fit the time. Allow extra time in your presentation for questions and watch out for nerves - this could mean that you talk faster on the day.
In the actual presentation you could take in a clock or take off your wrist watch and put it on the podium. This way you can see how the timings can develop.
3. Take a leaf out of Winston Churchill''s book - memorize your script.
He is widely attributed as being one of the great speakers. It took him six weeks to prepare his Maiden Speech in the House of Commons and he learnt it word perfect.
4. Video or tape record yourself
A very simple trick that could help you with your performance is to video or tape record yourself. This will give you some immediate feedback and will enable you to fine tune your performance.
Videoing a rehearsal is the staple of many presentation training companies - so why not save time and money and do it yourself?
