    . IELTS Speaking tips

How to practice speaking on your own? That't s tough question but there's an easy answer.

Many students ask for advice on speaking and one of the biggest problems is how to practice without a teacher. There's a simple answer here which I have tried with many students and it really works.

All you need is a mobile phone or voice recorder, DVDs or TV shows and some patience.

    1. Find some IELTS topics you want to practice and without thinking, answer the questions - BUT record yourself doing it.
    2. Listen to the recording and assess yourself with the following criteria
    a. fluency - do you stop between each word and say "errrr" a lot?
    b. vocabulary - do you have an interesting range of words or are you using just "safe" words from your pre-intermediate course you did in highschool?
    c. grammar - are you remembering to change the verb forms, using the past tense to speak about the past or using a range of future tenses and not only future simple? Did you remember the correct preposition for the comparative structure?
    d. pronunciation / intonation - listen carefully, did you clearly say the final sounds of words? -S, -ED, -T, etc. Did you say SH or S on words like school or sit? Are you speaking flat like a robot or do you have clear up and down emotions in your speech?
    3. Write down the exact things you said and then improve it, include better vocabulary, check the grammar, practice intonation and speakign fluently.
    4. Record yourself again!

To get further ideas and practice on how to speak "naturally" use DVDs, TV and films etc. These will be a great source of phrases and expressions for speech and also to check your use of grammar. And, of course, finally, they provide NATURAL pronunciation! Copy the way they speak and maybe even ACT WHAT THEY SAY TO YOUR FRIEND!
