    ----------------------------
Stam fires off fresh salvo at United as he joins Lazio
    ROME, Aug 27 (AFP)
Lazio's new recruit Jaap Stam fired another parting shot at former club Manchester United during his formal unveiling by the Italian first division outfit on Monday.
Dutch international Stam said he was looking forward to relaunching his career - but made no attempt to hide the fact that he was angry at United's decision to part company with him.
"Now I am happy to be here," the giant defender told reporters. "But certainly I am not happy at the way I have been treated. It is not simple to start the English season and then to hear that your services are no longer required."
Stam revealed he had talked by telephone with United's England international midfielder David Beckham since learning he was to be transferred, but said: "It's true I spoke with him but I have no intention in divulging what we said to each other."
But Stam is adamant he can continue to win trophies in Rome as he did with United, saying: "Lazio are a great team, you only need to look at the players. I think we can be as successful as United. I don't know if it was a mistake to let me go - we will see that in the future. But I would have never joined another English club because for me United are the greatest."
The Dutchman said he felt he would strike up a great partnership in central defence with Lazio skipper Alessandro Nesta.
It was also revealed that Spanish giants Real Madrid had made a late attempt to pip Lazio but the player had already decided to move to Rome.
Stam had accused United of 'throwing him onto the streets' in British press reports on Monday, saying he was shocked by the club's sudden desire to sell him just six months after he had inked a new five-year deal.
Stam is reported to have upset United manager Alex Ferguson with remarks in a candid autobiography although Ferguson denied any link between Stam's transfer and revelations in the book.
But Stam cast doubt on Ferguson's denials, telling the Daily Mail he could not understand why he had been axed.
"The only conclusion I can draw is that I have been kicked out by Sir Alex Ferguson," the paper quoted Stam as saying.
"I can think of no good sporting reason why I should be sold. For three years I have been in the first team and we have won every trophy we could.
"I wanted to sit down with Sir Alex to have a real chat about some of the things that had appeared in my book and caused so much trouble.
"I wanted to clear the air but when we sat down for the talks, they took a very different turn. Ferguson started to go on about wanting a different player for my position. He asked me if I would be happy to stay on the bench all season," he said.
"I was shocked. I could not believe what he was saying. He must have known what my answer would be. I said: 'No way'. He then said there was a club in for me and that United had already accepted the fee. The situation was crystal clear - I was being forced out," Stam added.
"I wanted to end my career with United and I thought I would be there for life."
France's World Cup-winning central defender Laurent Blanc, now with Inter Milan, is head of the list of possible replacements for Stam. PSV Eindhoven's Dutch international Kevin Hofland and Valencia's Argentine defender Roberto Ayala are also in the reckoning, according to British reports.
