On the occassion of 30th anniversary of Vietnam and German diplomatic relationship, Goethe Institute co-operate with VNSO to hold a concert named German Symphony Concert. Under baton of German Conductor Wolfgang Hoyer, VNSO''s 70 members and pianist Ton Nu Nguyet Minh will perform the concert.

On the occasion of Vietnamese Day For the Poor, a special classic music program will be held under the co-ordination of Vietnam Television - Vietnam Association of Musicians - Xahoi & Thong tin Journal (Vietnam Post and Telecommunication Corporation) with the title:

?oHAND IN HAND?

This is a great program carefully prepared and will be officially performed on October 15, 2005 at Hanoi Opera House.
Aiming at bringing a wonderful performance to the audiences and creating a good chance for politicians and businessmen to express their kindness through practical activities for the poor in Vietnam, the Organizers welcome all of your contributions to the Program.

Purpose & Meaning of the Concert

?oHand in hand? is a special concert carefully arranged by the Director of Vietnam National Symphone Orchestra - Vietnam?T s leading cellist, Mr. Ngo Hoang Quan. It is made with classic masterpieces of world-famous composers played by qualified artists (who have had performance around the world in such countries as China, Japan, Thai Lan, Singapore, etc.) As an outstanding cultural event, ?oHand in Hand? also bears great spiritual meaning in the world of integration. It is rather a great event participated with people of all ranges, all social positions, all nationalities, who are living in Vietnam with the sense of humane. Therefore, your joining and sponsoring the program also means to attach your enterprise to the social works and the career of helping the poor in Vietnam for a better life of the whole community.

All the supporters of the program including social organizations, enterprises, and individuals will be recorded, their names on digital screen directly broadcasted on Vietnam Televisions. All contributions and supports will be publicly announced in a press conference 10 days before the concert and repeatedly on VTV1, VTV3 channels. They will be handed to the representative of Vietnam Fatherland Front - the Central Committee.

Following the prologue sung by Tonio who explains briefly what is about to happen, the people of the village celebrate the arrival of a troupe of strolling players who are to perform a comic play that evening. Canio the leader of the troupe explains to the people the story they will show, how Pagliaccio will take jealous revenge on the clown, his wife''''s lover. Canio shows too his jealousy of Nedda, resenting Tonio''''s attentions towards her. Canio then retires to the tavern for a drink while Tonio takes advantage of Canio''''s absence to declare his love for Nedda. She firmly rejects his advances and is forced to defend herself with a whip when he tries to kiss her.

Nedda is in love with Silvio who has persuaded her to elope with him after the play that night. However, Tonio overhears their declarations of love and, seeking revenge on Nedda, informs Canio of her betrayal. Canio returns too late to catch the lover but threatens Nedda with a knife and demands to know her lover?Ts name. She refuses to tell and he is only prevented from carrying out his threats by Peppe who disarms him. Canio now gets ready for the play, although his feelings, which he must hide, are in turmoil.

In the second act the villagers gather to watch the play which then starts and we see clearly that the action exactly mirrors the real life events. Nedda, as Columbine, awaits her lover Harlequin, who serenades her. The clown Taddeo returns from the market, makes advances to Columbine and is decisively rejected when Harlequin makes his appearance. Taddeo brings news of Pagliacciô?Ts imminent return, and Harlequin makes his escape, reminding Columbine to use drugged wine he has brought to put her husband to sleep.

Canio''''s jealousy takes over, as he seeks to force Nedda to reveal the name of her lover. The audience is now alarmed, since it is clear that Canio is no longer acting and that Nedda is terrified for her life. She tries to escape him, but Canio, in a jealous rage, stabs her with a knife. As she collapses, she calls for Silvio thereby identifying her lover. As he rushes to her side, he too is fatally wounded by Canio, and the "comedy" ends abruptly.

Leoncavallo based his realistic opera on an incident in the Calabrian village of Montalto in Sicilly, where the subsequent trial had been before his father, the village magistrate.
