Kênh tiếng anh...( dành cho khách nước ngoài và những bạn yêu thích ngoại ngữ tới thăm An Giang!)

AN GIANG - Japanese rice, which fetches twice the price of the local product, is thriving in the Mekong province of An Giang.

Ten years after Japanese joint venture firm Angimex-Kitoku (AKJ) planted its first seeds in Viet Nam, the company is producing up to 7 tonnes of export quality rice from each of its 400ha.

Established in 1991, AKJ is a joint venture between Japan's Kitoku Company, which has an 80 per cent stake, and local company Angimex.

Between 1992 and 1998, the Japanese partner has imported a variety of rice, black sesame and red bean strains to An Giang for experimental cultivation.

The company exports around 5,000 tonnes of unhusked Japanese rice, 500 tonnes of Japanese rice and 500 tonnes of rice seeds to Japan each year.

Due to the initial success of their operations, AKJ increased its legal capital from the initial US$300,000 to US$716,000 in 1998.

Nearly 360 households grow the Japanese rice and sell it back to the company at VND2,500 per kilogramme of unhusked Japanese rice. Rice seeds have been substituted every two years.

The director of AKJ Akira Omori, said his company has tried to perfect a production line which includes cultivation, purchase, processing and export, not just for Japanese rice but also for long-grain Vietnamese rice.

Between 2000 and last year, AKJ's exports increased from 2,000 tonnes of unhusked Japanese rice and 12,000 tonnes of long-grain Vietnamese rice to 5,000 tonnes and 22,000 tonnes respectively. The company's main markets are Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines.

The chairman of the An Giang Provincial People's Committee, Nguyen Minh Nhi, said the province had created favourable con***ions for AKJ's investment and operations in the hope it would attract more foreign investors to the region. - VNS

An Giang makes advantage of ecological tourism
Ecological tourism represents an exclusive advantage for Mekong Delta provinces. Apart from some general features, each region in this delta possesses its own particular traits. In An Giang province, one of those traits is Ong Ho isle, located in My Hoa Hung commune, Long Xuyen town.
Beside huge orchards and crowded amateur-singer and musician groups like in other places, Ong Ho isle is surrounded with tra***ional handicraft villages of weaving, fish-raising rafts and, particularly, beaches created by sand dunes. Separating from Long Xuyen town only by a half of Hau river's width (about 500m), visitors can come by themselves to the isle from Long Xuyen town by wooden ferry or go there, following tourism tours, by yacht. After visiting the museum of the former President Ton Duc Thang, visitors can use canoes to go here there by canals and ***ches to see garden houses, make their acquitance with the daily life and habits of local people, try various fruits, tra***ional dishes and enjoy amateur musicians-singers. And when the day declines, visitors can take their bath in the river, wallow themselves in the infinite universe of air and water, feeling how the alluvium-bearing water fondles their skin and flesh, letting their mind fly back to the times when the first pioneers came to this land. And while the evening comes, visitors are led to houses on stilts, made from wood, bamboo and various leaves, to take their rest and attend an artistic show conducted by amateurs-singers. They can walk on foot or go by boat and land on the river banks to pay a visit to fish-raising rafts, drinking ruou de (rice vodka) and try some meals made from fish grown in rafts together with the raft owners and local men, enjoying flavor and taste of the life in a water-full region. After the party, if they want they can sleep overnight on the raft. And before their departure, visitors are invited to pay a visit to the artisan village of weavers. Here, they can buy different souvenirs, such as non (typical Vietnamese cone hat), baskets for flowers, bamboo grain baskets and panniers, tea-pot shells made from coconut... Presently, every year the Ong Ho isle receives nearly 100,000 domestic and foreign visitors.
