    Cultural landscape
    *-*-*
    I. TASK 1: Reading
The recognition of the significance of the concept of cultural landscape is now widely accepts around the world in cutural heritage convervation practice. Reflecting this world- wide tend, UNESCO?Ts Operational Guidelines for World Heritage listing were amended in 1993 to include cutural landscapes. There is often the tendecy to assume that only rural areas are includes in the concep tof cutural landscapes. But it really does embrace urban areas. In the contexr of the AWPNUC Symposium in Ha Noi the culture landsape contruct is particularly germane because it proposes a contextual view of humand settings where the material cultural and humane values are inextricably associated.
The concept of cutural landscapes demands that humand settings, urban and rural, are seen as composite entites where inter- relationships between people.events, and place exist through historic periods. Hence cultural landscapes have continity because they are imprint of human history. They are results of humand intervention and present a record of human activity and human values. They reflect our , and our predecessors?T, relationships with our surrounds. They are a record of who we are and of our experiences, customs, and idcologies. Thus cutural landscapes are a social construct. They are not what we see, but a way of seeing where we interpret what we see through cultural con***ionings.
Given that people value their past, both its physical manifestation and meanings inherent in places which are bound up in the world ?~heritage?T. There are two fundamental canons which apply to the cutural landscape idea:

    1. The first canon is the existence of layers in the lanscape which can be read and their meaning interpretd. It is the layers which refect human values and signficance.
    2. The second, and following from 1, is that heritage is not a matter of separate dots on a map where individual sites or buidings are separately listed. The cutural landscape idea means that everything is interconnected because of the composite nature of cutural landscapes. People find attachment, and therefore heritage values, in these interconnections. There is a connection here with one of the focuses of the Symposium, that is the cmprehensive value in the urban patterns, specific components and cutural tra***ions are intergrates so that conservation of social value is award due recogniton. It also embraces that fact that there are two categories of cutural landscapes. There are:
    (i) The icons or special places, and
    (ii) Ordinayry, everyday places.
It is important to remember that the later are just as important as the forner when it comes to deciphering heritage significance. Conservation is not about protecting only the Great White House.
II. TASK 2: What is the main idea?
    Now answer the following questions
    1. What is the topic?
    2. Where is the text probably taken from?
    3. What os the write?Ts main purpose?
    4. Who is the intended reader?
