    Liverpool 1 - 1 Ipswich Town
    Fourth Round
Diouf spot on to send Reds through
El Hadji Diouf was the Liverpool hero as he broke Ipswich hearts to send the Reds into the last eight of the Worthington Cup with a dramatic penalty shoot-out victory.
After 120 minutes action this game was tied at 1-1. Tommy Miller had givene Ipswich a surprise first half lead before Diouf levelled from the spot in the second period.
Anfield then staged only its second ever penalty shoot-out and the Senegal striker struck the winning kick in front of the Kop after Jamie Clapham had missed for Ipswich.
Gerard Houllier reshuffled his pack for the visit of First Division Ipswich Town. Young reserve striker Neil Mellor made his senior debut for the Reds but the biggest surprise in Houllier's team selection was the dramatic reprieve handed to the under-fire Jerzy Dudek.
Despite originally stating that Chris Kirkland would take Dudek's place between the sticks, the manager decided to give his Polish goalkeeper the chance to start rebuilding his shattered confidence following his catastrophic error against Manchester United at the weekend and he was warmly supported by the Anfield crowd.
Apart from the inclusion of Mellor there were seven other changes to the team that started against United as Liverpool attempted to take another step on the road that will hopefully end in cup glory at the Millennium Stadium in February.
Houllier has publicly stated his desire to experience another Worthington Cup triumph this season but his makeshift side failed to make any impression during the opening stages and Ipswich were well worth the lead they took after 13 minutes.
Bent crossed from the right, Babbel could only clear the ball into the path of Tommy Miller and the midfielder proceeded to slot the ball into the bottom far corner of Dudek's net.
Ipswich continued to look the better side. It was they who looked more likely to add to the score and the under-fire Dudek came to Liverpool's rescue on more than one occasion. His best save coming in the 34th minute when he denied Counago after the striker had been sent racing clean through on goal.
Liverpool's firsteffort ofnote only came just three minutes earlier. Diouf played Smicer through to the right of goal and the Czech international forced Andy Marshall into a low diving save.
But whatever Gerard Houllier said to his side during the break it seemed to do the trick and attacking the Kop in the second half Liverpool lay siege to the Ipswich goal.
Ten minutes after the restart they drew level. Mellor made a determined run into the Ipswich box and was brought crashing to the ground by a late tackle from the veteran defender Mark Venus. Dermot Gallagher correctly awarded a penalty and Diouf converted the spot kick, firing low into Marshall's bottom right-hand corner.
Moments later Mellor burst through the Ipswich defence again and was unlucky to see his shot come back off the upright. After a quiet first half the youngster began to impose himself more and more as the game wore on and before leaving the field to a standing ovation in the 75th minute he went close on three further occasions.
Houllier handed another Academy graduate his first team debut when he sent on 18-year old midfielder John Welsh in place of the injured Vladimir Smicer but it was ex-Liverpool reserve Jim Magilton who almost snatched a sensational winner for the visitors with five minutes remaining.
The home fans were left breathing a huge sigh of relief as the Northern Ireland international headed onto the post, with Dudek beaten, following a free-kick on the right by Venus. At the opposite end Baros and then Riise squandered late opportunities to win the game inside 90 minutes and extra time beckoned.
A superb one-handed save from the grounded Marshall then denied Riise but it was not all one way traffic and Ipswich looked equally capable of plundering a second goal as the tie ebbed from end to end.
Neither side, however, could make the breakthrough and the lottery of a penalty shoot-out was required to determine who would go through to meet Aston Villa in the last eight ofthe competition
Gerrard, Baros, Riise, Carragher and Diouf all converted for Liverpool in the shoot-out. Jamie Clapham was the unfortunate villain for Ipswich, striking the bar with the visitors' second kick.
It meant Liverpool won the shoot-out 5-4 and a trip to Villa Park now awaits them in the next round.
