Topic 24: The leisure industry is growing rapidly. The active role of modern technology in people's leisure lives nowadays has made them less creative. Do you agree or disagree?

I disagree with the statement that people do not entertain themselves as much as they used to because of modern technology. I believe that modern technology has not made people less creative. In fact it has changed the definition of leisure and the lifestyle of people.
Modern technology has changed our definition of leisure. Earlier, leisure meant going out and meeting people, playing outdoor games, going to cinema to watch movies and so on. However, today, leisure time is full of choices. We have so many things to do within the four walls of our house. We can watch countless programs on national and international channels; we can play online games; we can chat with friends and relatives in any corner of the world; we can do arm-chair tourism by which we can visit any historical place or museum sitting in our arm-chair. That is why perhaps it looks as if we people do not entertain ourselves as much as we used to before.
Another reason why people don‘t entertain as much as before is also not because of technology. Technology has, in fact, given us more time to enjoy but we can‘t strike a balance between work and play. We have become workaholics. Life in the past was simpler. People worked for basic needs. Now work is not just a way of life. It is for personal fulfillment. We set goals for ourselves such as a house or a car. We choose this way of life. Now we have improved standard of living but this has come at a very high cost.
Finally, I would like to state that the given statement is flawed because nowadays people specially take out time to entertain themselves. This can be evident from the mushroom growth of leisure centres such as hotels, restaurants, fun parks and spas. Tourist places are always full of people.
*****m up, I pen down saying that, technology has not made us less creative. We entertain ourselves more than earlier times but the ways of entertainment are different and technology has given us more choices than before.

Topic 22: Many people are optimistic about the 21st century and expect scientists to make positive changes to the world. To what extent do you agree or disagree with their optimism? What changes would you like to see in the new century?

As one of the most important inventions of the 21st century, high technology has a wide application in all aspects of our lives. A sizable percentage of people have high expectations on the development of technology, while some others hold the view that not all the changes are beneficial to the world. To all extents of this issue, I stand on the third side that the improvement is worth being expected but negative impacts are still remain unsolved.

On the positive side, there are a considerable number of new inventions making life more convenient and comfortable. For instance, a range of technological appliances, such as television, computer and telephone, have helped people not only access instantly to useful information, but also communicate with each other easily. Besides, high-tech equipment has been advanced rapidly and has played a significant role in human life. In the near future, people will no longer have to do housework, go out for shopping or go to the offices to work thanks to modern devices with smart functions: robot, smartphone, tablet computer, to name but a few.

However, on the negative side, technological advances have posed threats on both individuals and the whole society. People using these modern devices for a long time may be prone to numerous health problems or become lazy, less active in thinking and less creative. Take the United States, for example, a recent study has revealed that dependence on high-tech tools could lead to poor sleep habits and harmful effects on the brains. Moreover, the continuing improvement in technology has created cumulative negative impacts on global environment, for instance, pollution, over-exploitation and global warming. Above all, future changes should be strongly linked with the benefits of human life and natural environment, rather than only focus on upgrading this high-tech equipment.

All the evidence supports an unmistakable conclusion that along with countless positive changes the 21st century brings to us, detrimental effects on society are inevitable. The top priority now is that people should step up efforts to minimize the negative impacts for a clean and beautiful world.

TOPIC 17: THERE ARE SOCIAL, MEDICAL, AND TECHNICAL PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THE USES OF MOBILE PHONES. WHAT FORMS DO THESE PROBLEMS TAKE? DO PROBLEMS OF USING MOBILE PHONES OUTWEIGH THE BENEFITS?

Along with the rapid development of the society, remarkable changes have taken place in telecommunication, especially in mobile phones. The fact is that mobile phones have revolutionized the way we communicate, people keep in touch with others much more easily than did the generations before. There is no denying that mobile phone is one of the most important inventions of the 20th century. However, there are some problems when people use mobile phones, which can be seen from social, medical and technical perspectives.
From the social perspective, mobile phones can be a problem in some public places. This is due to the fact that some people being indeliberate or impolite annoy or distract others around by using mobile phones. That’s why people are required to switch off mobile phones in some places such as libraries, hospitals, cinemas and before the class begins. Another problem of mobile phones is that they can cause bad effects on our health because of their waves. For instance, they cause damage on our brain or even cancers. Another lethal health concern is the link between mobile phones and road accidents. This is because when driving and talking on the phone, people lose control of the vehicles easily, which puts much more risk of collisions. Moreover, some peoples use mobile phones as fashion accessories and they can pay a fortune for them. Hence, mobile phones can be a target for thieves.
Although mobile phones have a number of problems, they still play a significant role in our everyday life and continue to perform their roles as a key social tool. This is due to the fact that mobile phones are produced with more and more helpful functions, which allows users to not only call, send text messages but also take photos, listen to music, surf the internet and so on. In conclusion, the number of problems above can be well handled for people to enjoy the marvelous benefits of mobile phones in a completely way.

Some people think that radio has become out-of-date, and there is no need to listen to the radio for entertainment and news. Do you agree or disagree?
<FONT class=imageattach face=[/IMG]
Along with the development of society, people nowadays have more various types of telecommunications to satisfy their demands for news and entertainment. Over the past decades, the spread of using televisions and the internet for these purposes has lead to a significant decline in the number of people who listen to the radio frequently. Although many people believe that radio is not necessary and not as efficient as television and the internet, I strongly support the idea that radio still plays an important role in social life.

First of all, many programs in the radio have higher quality than ones in television and the internet, especially the news programs and musical programs. Even thought several people think that radio is less attractive than television and the internet which provide the viewers with both images and sounds, it is the fact that audience can concentrate more properly in the contents of programs on the radio because they are not distracted by the presence of the announcers or other visual effects. For this reason, people can get more useful information or approach the real factors of arts that are broadcast. In ad***ion, there is a sizable percentage of programs from television or the internet containing mature contents, which rarely appear on radio, for example: action films, scary movies or pornography. As a result, radio is still the safest type of mass media due to their educational programs.

Secondly, for many people, in this society with very high pace of life, radio is most convenient to get information and to relax. It is clear that listening to the radio doesn’t take as much time as watching television or browsing websites, because people can do it during other activities, such as: doing housework, driving cars or jogging in the parks. Obviously, listening to the radio still helps people to relax and keeps them update with social life but it does not make some people become couch potatoes like television and the internet do. Besides, radio is easier to approach and use by people of all ages and levels of income than other types of telecommunications. Even when you come to an underdeveloped region without satellite television or online computer, you can still receive the radio signals and listen to the news.

Some people might argue that radio can not reflect the reality as well as television or the internet and consequently, the audience do not get adequate information. This seems to make sense, however, in fact, the producers of programs on television and the internet nowadays tend to focus on making money from commercial and attracting the viewers by more entertaining but less educational contents. More over, despite an increasing number of people ignore the usefulness of radio, it is still a popular type of mass media due to its convenience and simplicity.

In conclusion, radio should not become obsolete because of its variety of advantages. In the near future, radio broadcasting will probably continue to form a large segment in mass media. Absolutely, it is still used widely by people all over the world.
