Interviewer: Will you tell me something about your hometown?
Candidate: Yes, Harbin is about a thousand kilometres away from Beijing. It takes you about 15 hours to get there by train. Itõ?Ts very cold there in winter, much colder than it is in Beijing. The average temperature in winter is about 20 degrees centigrade below zero. I have experienced minus 30 degrees. It was terrible.
Interviewer: Oh, yes. I canõ?Tt stand cold weather.
Candiadate: But many people in my hometown like winter, because they can do a lot of winter sports, such as skating and skiing. And itõ?Ts fun to play in the snow, too. They enjoy winter sports very much, My hometown is famous for its annual ice sculpture festival, which attracts visitors from all over the world. You can see ice houses, ice palacies, ice figures, ice birds, even the Great Wall and Effiel Tower made of ice. Youõ?Tll feel that you are in a totally different world. I like the ice lanterns very much. They are of different shapes and colours. Itõ?Ts fascinating.
Interviewer: How about summer in your hometown?
Candidate: Itõ?Ts very nice in summer there. Itõ?Ts cooler than it is in Beijing. My hometown is a summer resort. You may swim in the Songhua River or relax on an island in the river. I think the average temperature in summer there is about 26 degrees centigrade.
Interviewer: Have you noticed any other differences between your hometown and Beijing?
Candidate: Yes, I think there is some difference I the architecture styles between these two cities. The modern buildings are more or less the same. But the old buildings are different. In my hometown, you can see many buildings of Russian style. The tops of the buildings look like an onion. But these kinds of buildings canõ?Tt be seen in Beijing. My hometown is influenced by Russian culture in many ways, because some Russians came to this city a long time ago and lived there. For example, bread is called Mianbao in Chinese. But in my hometown, it is called õ?ohlebõ? instead. Itõ?Ts a Russian word. Many streets and shops have Russian names. So Harbin has earned its reputation as õ?oMoscow in the Eastõ?.
Interviewer: Is there any difference between the food in the two cities?
Candidate: Well, I havenõ?Tt seen a big difference in the food between these two places. They are more or less the same. They are tasty. But Beijing has many excellent restaurants serving food from almost every part in China and from every country in the world. You can have very hot and spicy food from Sichuan, sweet food from Guangdong, American food, French food, Japanese food, Korean food etcõ?Ư
Interviewer: How about the difference between the people in the two places?
Candidate: In my opinion, people in my hometown are more straightforward. They say what they want to say, seldom in a roundabout way. So this gives you an impression that they are quarrelsome. I think this character is affected by the cold weather. You know, people have to do things very quickly in cold weather. Another characteristic of the people in my hometown is that they are friendly and generous. Whenever you are in trouble, they will give you some help. When you eat out together, they usually offer to pay the bill for the meal. Once youõ?Tve made friends with them, they are your friends forever. But in Beijing, I had some unpleasant experiences. I remember I went shopping in a big clothing store one day. I asked for the price of a leather jacket. To my surprise, the salesgirl looked at me for some time and then said it was very expensive. These kinds of things often happen in Beijing. People from other places are looked down upon by the local people in Beijing.

I have been to many cities, but the city I know and like best is the one Iam describing to you. The name of the city is Dalat. I spent a week there on business. Dalat is located in the Highlands in Central Vietnam ad is about 300 km from HCM City.
It is a very pretty city built on the â?oLang Biangâ? Plateau and is situated in the middle of a valley which is surrounded by rolling hills and a range of high and rugged mountains.
The city is centered to the west of the beautiful Ho Xuan Huong Lake. For the most part, the roads in the area are curved and steep. Magnificent villas are scattered on both sides of the roads. We can also find some lovely villas nestled in the pine-woods and others located far up on the mountains and overlooking the city and valley. The beautiful mountains, trees and lakes make Dalat resemble a city located somewhere in Switzerland and not belonging to Vietnam.
I think Dalat is a very pretty and enjoyable city. It is a favorite place for tourists and artists. Artists find Dalat ideal for their work. It offers beautiful scenery for their inspiration. Other persons find the beauty and solitude inspirational for their writing.

õ? Advantages of living in a city:
We are living in the Information Age. Change is much more rapid than ever. Cities and towns represent the central pulse of change. Change, information, media events etcõ?Ưare coming but very slowly to the rural areas. The young generation is easily swept up into this pace. They have the energy, the verve that they want to exert. They naturally seek out new and exciting things. They are in a hurry to grow up, to find excitements, to meet new friends.
For many young people, rural life- a simple and slow aced existence- does not appeal to their idea of fulfillment. One example of a cityõ?Ts appeal is fashion. Designs and fashion trends begin in the cities and slowly, if at all, filter out to the rural areas. The young generation has always wanted to be õ?oinõ? on fashion. Designer magazines, fashion shows, new labels are readily available in the city.
Apart from that, modern amenities are more prominent in the city. Satellite TV, fax machines, computers, newspapers, telephone, even simple electricity are sometimes difficult to come by in rural areas. The outside world is so much close to us, in the city. With all this information and technology in the city, opportunities to do (of doing) something open up. The countryside offers jobs such as farming or small cottage industry. The range of carreer choice is very narrow. The educational facilities in rural areas reflect these limited opportunities. The younger generation often moves to large cities primarily for a better education, which, in turn, facilitates their job search. As cities grow, carreer choices widen- big business, banking, investment, foreign companies, hotel and service industries, all have head offices in the city.
We also must not forget the appeal for meeting new people and friends. Rural areas are often very homogenous. Yet the city offers friendship with people from all over the country as well as from distance lands.
In conclusion, we can see that for many young people, the quiet life in the countryside is not attractive. Cities and towns have movement, energy, excitement, noise that young people crave for. Cities also offer new music, arts, a variety of night life and fashion. And in young peopleõ?Ts minds, the educational and carreer possibilities are located in the city.
õ? The traffic problems in city and how to solve them
Our country in general and our city in particular has seen great changes recently thanks *****ccessful ecomic achievements. Many people, especially the young are attracted to this city in the hope of finding good opportunities to study as well as to secure a good job. As a result, the city is more and more populated, and more and more vehicles of all kinds are being used as means of transport. This creates many traffic jams all over the city, especially during rush hours. According to the latest statistics there were more than 4000 traffic accidents in the last six months, killing hundreds of people and damaging thousands of vehicles. The frequent traffic congestion also causes a lot of trouble to the people going to their work places or going somewhere to deal with urgent matters.
So itõ?Ts about time the government did something to solve these problems.
As we all know, the streets in our city were built a long time ago and were designed for a city of two million people or so. The increase in population seems to make the streets narrower, resulting in traffic congestion. The government should enlarge the streets or turn them into one- way streets. Then to reduce the need of using private vehicles to go to work or on business, the government can set up more bus lines leading to major areas, markets, shopping centres and recreation places. Next the government should clear up sidewalks and pavement occupied by sellers and buyers so that pedestrians donõ?Tt have to walk in the streets. A lot of riders often violate traffic laws. They go against traffic lights in defiance of eve the policemen standing guard over the traffic at the crossroads and else where without being fined since the number of traffic policemen seem to be few in number. So we should have more traffic policemen keeping an eye on traffic everywhere. Then traffic laws and regulations should be announced repeatedly through mass media and taught in class. Driving licenses should be a õ?omustõ? and age limits to ride a motorbike should be raised. The police should have tighter control over traffic enforcements in this city and should severely penalize those who violate traffic laws. Last but not least, we should see to it that everyone moving in the streets have self- discipline. They should know how to cherish their own lives as well as the lives of others by observing traffic laws. Only then can traffic problems be solved.
