    The Sikorsky H-19 Chickasaw, (also known by its Sikorsky model number, S-55) was a multi-purpose helicopter used by the United States Army and United States Air Force. It was also license-built by Westland Aircraft as the Westland Whirlwind in the United Kingdom. United States Navy and United States Coast Guard models were designated HO4S, while those of the U.S. Marine Corps were designated HRS. In 1962, the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Marine Corps versions were all redesignated as H-19s like their U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force counterparts.
    The H-19''''s first flight was on November 10, 1949 and it entered operations in 1950. Over 1,000 of the helicopters were manufactured by Sikorsky for the United States. An ad***ional 550 were manufactured by licensees of the helicopter including Westland Aircraft, the Société nationale des constructions aéronautiques du sud-est (SNCASE) in France and Mitsubishi in Japan.
    The helicopter was widely exported, used by many other nations, including Portugal, Greece, Israel, Chile, South Africa, Denmark and Turkey.
    The H-19 underwent live service tests during the Korean War beginning in 1951 as an unarmed transport helicopter. Undergoing tests such as medical evacuation, tactical control and front-line cargo support, the helicopter succeeded admirably in surpassing the capabilities of the H-5 Dragonfly which had been used throughout the Korean conflict by the Army.
    In 1956, the French Air Force experimented with arming the H-19, then being superseded in service by the more capable Piasecki H-21 and Sikorsky H-34 helicopters. The H-19 was originally fitted with a 20-mm cannon, two rocket launchers, plus a 20-mm cannon, two 12.7-mm machine guns, and a 7.5-mm light machine gun firing from the cabin windows, but this load proved far too heavy, and even lightly-armed H-19 gunships fitted with flexible machine guns for self-defense proved underpowered.
    The H-19 was also used in the early days of the Vietnam War before being supplanted by the Sikorsky H-34 Choctaw, which was based on the H-19.

    De Vertol/Piasecki H-21 Shawnee was een van de eerste echte tandemrotor-helikopters die door de voormalige firma Piasecki Helicopter (later Vertol) werd gebouwd. Het toestel kent meerdere bijnamen, waaronder ?oworkhorse? (werkpaard), "de banaan", en ?orescuer? (redder).
    De ontwikkeling van *** toestel startte in 1946, toen een experimentele lichtere versie werd gebouwd; de Piasecki HRP-2.
    Het prototype van de H-21 maakte vervolgens in 1949 zijn eerste vlucht en brak vanaf 1952 (voor helikopters) diverse hoogte en snelheidsrecords.
    De H-21 was een transporthelikopter die standaard met met wielen, maar ook met ski?Ts en drijvers kon worden uitgerust en het toestel bleek, vanwege de goede prestaties bij lage temperaturen, zeer geschikt om mee te werken in een arctische omgeving.
    De H-21 Shawnee werd intensief gebruikt in de eerste jaren van het Vietnam conflict en werd voor vrachtvervoer, troepentransport en search and rescue ingezet.
    De Franse landmacht (Armée de Terre) en marine (Aéronavale) zetten 108 H-21A?Ts in tijdens het conflict in de oude Franse kolonie Algerije. Hierbij werden in 1956 op redelijk grote schaal luchtlandingstroepen afgezet.
    In 1956 werd de firma Piasecki Aircraft Corporation opgekocht en werd deze opgenomen in de VERTOL Aircraft Company die de productie verder overnam. Deze firma werd op zijn beurt in 1960 weer opgekocht door de firma Boeing en werd Boeings helikopterfabriek.
    De H-21 kan daarom ook zonder meer worden beschouwd als een rechtstreekse voorvader van een latere bekende; de CH-47 Chinook.
    Er werden 1100 stuks geproduceerd.
    Er bestonden 3 versies van het toestel:
    * de H-21A, herkenbaar aan een deur met ronde vorm en met 7 ronde patrijspoorten.
    * de H-21B, deze had geen automatische piloot en
    * de H-21C, die was voorzien van 9 patrijspoorten.
    De H-21 werd met succes militair ingezet. Het bleek een toestel met grote laadcapaciteit te zijn en was ook in technisch opzicht zeer betrouwbaar. Daarom werd het ook een prima export product.

    Although it resembles the much larger S61/H3 Sea King series, the single engine S62 was an earlier design, based upon the piston powered S55.
    The S62 has the distinctions of being Sikorsky''s first production design powered by a turboshaft (rather than piston) engine and Sikorsky''s first amphibious helicopter, although it was only produced in small numbers.
    The S62 takes the S55''s dynamic systems, including the rotor blades, main and tail rotor heads, main, intermediate and tail gearboxes and components of other systems including hydraulics and flight controls coupled with a General Electric CT58 turboshaft and a new, larger fuselage.
    The new fuselage combined a hull and outrigger floats (housing retractable main undercarriage) giving the S-62 its amphibious capability and a larger more voluminous main cabin. The comparatively light weight of the turboshaft meanwhile meant that it could be mounted above the S-62''s fuselage, rather than in the nose as on the S55 and S58.
    The S62 was built in three versions. The prototype flew for the first time on May 14 1958, and the first of the initial production version, the S62A, was delivered to Los Angeles Helicopters in 1961. Only one S62B flew, it differed from the S62A in having the dynamic systems of the S58 (described separately). The S62C was a commercial development of the US Coast Guard''s search and rescue HH52A with a more powerful engine.
