DescriptionThe South African Scatter Mine System may be mounted either in ahelicopter cargo bay or on the rear of a 5-ton or larger truck. Thesystem is based around the use of modular launch frames (a helicoptercould carry two frames, a truck four), each of which carries 20disposable launch tubes. Each tube carries either 10 anti-tank minesor 84 anti-personnel mines. The resultant minefield densities willvary according to the speed at which the launch vehicle travels andthus the length of the minefield created.The anti-tank mine used with this system is cylindrical withspring-loaded arms protruding from the side to ensure correctalignment once the parachute-retarded mine comes to rest. The minewill detonate upon the electronic fuze receiving the correct firecommand signals from magnetic and seismic sensors. The mine will alsodetonate if disturbed, when a self-destruct time elapses or when a lowbattery signal is provided.The anti-personnel mines used with the system do not have aparachute retard system as they are small kidney-shaped mines with abuilt-in arming delay. The mine will detonate if disturbed, when aself-destruct time elapses or when a low battery signal is provided.
