Mellberg snubbed Milan for Villa Posted July 19, 2001 - 22:42 by Matt
Aston Villa's new Ê5million central defender Olof Mellberg has revealed he turned down the chance to join Inter Milan in favour of moving to Villa Park.

The Italian giants made an 11th hour bid last night to try and persuade Mellberg to move to Serie A - but the 23-year-old had already decided to join Villa.

The Swede revealed: "I know about the interest from Inter Milan, but Villa were the club that showed the most interest in me."

Milan move for Dalla Bona Posted July 18, 2001 - 19:35 by Matt
AC Milan are leading the race to sign Chelsea ace Sam Dalla Bona after the Blues admitted they were resigned to losing the Italian midfielder.

The Stamford Bridge club's managing director Colin Hutchinson confirmed that Milan have jumped ahead of rivals Inter in the queue to capture the 20-year-old Italian midfielder.

"There is interest from AC Milan, but we haven't heard anything back from the player or his agent, which tells us he isn't really committed to Chelsea," said Hutchinson.

"That's why we accepted an offer of just over Ê5million from Venezia this summer, but Sam didn't want to join them."

Dalla Bona had a fine season for the Blues last term after being given a central midfield role by boss Claudio Ranieri.

But the former Atalanta player turned down a new contract earlier this year and it is now believed he wants to return to Italy.

The loss of Dalla Bona will not be a massive blow to Ranieri as the former Atletico Madrid manager has already strengthened his midfield this summer by signing Frank Lampard and Emmanuel Petit for a combined price of Ê18.5million.

Guly to Inter - Brocchi to Milan Posted July 18, 2001 - 19:33 by Matt
AC Milan's Argentinian midfielder Guly has moved to San Siro co-tenant Inter Milan in yet another player exhange between the two clubs.

Guly was very close to forming part of last week's deal which saw Inter's Pirlo move to AC, but this time the Argentine has moved in exhange for Inter's Christian Brocchi.

Guly is reportedly keen to work under new Inter Milan coach Hector Cuper who is of course also Argentinian.

Marseille raid Milan for Ba, Boban and Chamot Posted July 18, 2001 - 19:32 by Matt
Having completed the loan deal of AC Milan midfielder Ibrahim Ba, Olympique Marseille have been linked with two of his teammates - Jose Antonio Chamot and Zvonimir Boban.

According to Italian reports, L'OM's general manager Bernard Tapie is set to make offers to both players.

After missing out on Laurent Blanc, Tapie sees Argentinian international Chamot as an alternative at sweeper, while he is self-confessed fan of Croatian playmaker Boban.

Press reports suggest an answer from both players should be given before the weekend.

Milan enter chase for Mellberg Posted July 17, 2001 - 12:41 by Matt
Aston Villa may find themselves locked in a two-way battle with AC Milan to sign Swedish international central defender Olof Mellberg.

Villa hope to push through a deal for the 23-year-old from Racing Santander for Ê5million this week but interest in Mellberg in Italy is growing.

Villa remain hopeful that they can still pull off a deal and, if Mellberg does sign, manager John Gregory has admitted that he will need some time to get to grips with the pace of the Premiership.

Gregory said: "I think the Premiership is a one-off in world football. In the Spanish league for instance you get more time than you do over here.

"There will be an adjustment but he has been playing in their first team for the best part of four seasons. He has got a lot of experience under his belt for someone so young.

"He is in the national side and, at 23, he is the right age. I think he has got a lot to look forward to.

"There are similarities between him and Gareth Southgate. He is not as good as Gareth yet. But Gareth is seven years older than him. But the kid can become a very good player for us.

"He has a lot of pace for a big lad. He can play. Mellberg doesn't quite have the footballing technique of the top Spanish defenders. But he can certainly control and pass the ball.

"He puts himself about. He has weaknesses but I think there is a lot of potential and I am excited at the prospect of him coming to Villa."

Chelsea confirm Milan approach for Sam Posted July 17, 2001 - 9:43 by Matt
Chelsea managing director Colin Hutchinson has confirmed that they are talks with Milan regarding the transfer of Sam Dalla Bona to Serie A, but denied contact from Internazionale.
Both Serie A sides have confirmed their interest in the young midfielder, but Hutchinson stated that Milan are the only team to have made an approach.

"There is some interest from AC Milan," Hutchinson said. "We`re in talks at the moment, but we have not had an offer from Inter."

Hutchinson added that The Blues are desperate to keep the 20-year-old at Stamford Bridge, but appear resigned to losing him to Serie A.

"We made Sam an offer to improve and extend his contract in April but we haven`t heard anything back from the player or his agent, which tells us he isn't really committed to Chelsea," Hutchinson said.

"That's why we accepted an offer of just over Ê5 million from Venezia this summer, but Sam didn't want to go there."

Dalla Bona established himself as a regular under Claudio Ranieri last term, but it appears that he is desperate to return to his native Italy.
