    Research Doctorate in
    ANALYSIS AND GOVERNANCE OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
    Academic Year 2006/2007
    Call for Applications:
    There are 6 places in total with 5 scholarships available *****ccessful
    candidates.
    Two of the five scholarships are directly bound to the research areas
    ?osustainability of territorial transformations on coastal and insular
    areas" and is financed by THETIS S.p.a and ?oAnalysis and Governance of
    Sustainable Development in China? financed by Venice International
    University (VIU)

    Obligatory requirements for application:
    Candidates are obliged to provide a detailed Curriculum Vitae and a
    Research proposal (as detailed below) together with complete compiled
    applications and other relevant qualifications as specified in detail in
    the rules and regulations found on:

    Research Proposal
    The candidate will be required to develop a research project concerning
    sustainable development, based on analysis, evaluation and planning.
    Both the research method and approach must be interdisciplinary in
    nature. The project must state which research instruments are to be used,
    such as environmental evaluation, economic evaluation, definition of
    indicators and multi-criteria analysis, geographical information systems
    etc. The utility of the new procedures suggested must be specified when
    developing policies, in particular with regard *****stainability and
    governance. These may directly involve planning, decision support systems,
    change management, legal aspects etc. It may be useful to refer to
    specific subject areas such as the integrated management of coastal areas,
    risk analysis and redevelopment of industrial sites, integrated
    management of water supplies, governance and civilian society in the
    Me***erranean area. The project proposal length must not exceed 20,000
    characters, spaces included.
    Project proposals bound to the stipulated research areas:
    Where the candidate intends to compete for one or both of the
    externally funded scholarships (offered by Thetis and VIU) he/ she is required
    to develop individual research project proposals coherent to the titles
    as stated. The aforementioned guidelines given for the research
    proposals are also applicable for the thematically bound scholarships.

    Peace through Health Travelling Studentships
    For a research project...
    Deadline: July 1 - Annually
    Population Health Research Institute is offering a paid studentship for
    up to two students to undertake a research project in Peace through
    Health. One of these studentships will be available to Canadian
    students, and the other to students from other countries, to pursue a
    project in Peace through Health.
    The final product of the student''s research should include a report for
    publication in the Peace through Health website. The amount available
    for each studentship is up to CDN $2,500. This amount could be used to
    support travel or living expenses when the student is away or can be
    used towards the costs of the project.
    The project must be undertaken within 6 months of the award and is
    expected to last 4 to 6 weeks. A report is to be completed within 6
    months of completion of the project.
    The final form of the student''s research should both contribute to the
    development of the career of the student and in advancing the Peace
    through Health discipline. Possibilities include research work in
    war-affected country; design of a research project; a systematic review
    article; or a critical analysis of a relevant area. Possible topics
    include but are not limited to: peace-through-health; health impact of
    war and armed conflict; small arms/light weapons; health impact of
    militarism; women and children''s health (impact of media violence, war
    toys).

    Transitional Justice Fellowship Program
    For professionals to explore post-conflict strategies...
    Deadline: June 1 2006
    The fellowship programme will bring together 12 professionals from
    select countries to Cape Town, South Africa for three months to explore
    strategies to be used following a period of conflict or repressive rule
    in order to bring about a more just society. For 2006 eligible
    countries
    are: any African country; any Middle Eastern country; any country from
    the former Yugoslavia; Afghanistan, Burma, Cambodia, Indonesia, Sri
    Lanka, and Timor-Leste. The programme seeks to empower people with
    knowledge and analysis so that they may implement the lessons learned
    from experiences in other nations in their own countries. The training
    also aims to provide participants with the opportunity to develop a
    practitioner''s network within and across these world regions.
    The programme encourages fellows to engage in significant dialogue and
    undertake productive collaboration with each other. To this end, it
    includes regular core seminars, workshops, and conferences with
    professors from universities in Cape Town and elsewhere. Throughout the
    programme, fellows will be asked to share experiences, relate the
    lessons of their academic work and fieldwork, and debate critical
    issues
    of transitional justice.
    The fellowship is essentially a short sabbatical during which basic
    expenses are covered. Flights to and from Cape Town are included.
    Fellows receive sufficient financial support to pay for modest daily
    expenses during the fellowship period, including food, transportation,
    and entertainment. The programme also covers rent in modest
    accommodations. Fellows have private lodgings in apartments shared with
    other fellows located in a safe and secure housing complex near the
    University of Cape Town and the Observatory neighbourhood in Cape Town.

    The Centre for Peace and Reconciliation Studies at Coventry University
    in England is offering eight scholarships to overseas (non-European
    Union, or EU) students for their one-year Master''s programme in Peace
    and Reconciliation Studies. The scholarship will cover the tuition
    fees,
    valued at Ê8500, and recipients will be responsible for securing funds
    for subsistence and accommodation. It is meant *****pport the higher
    education of people from low income countries outside the EU; that is,
    applicants from the United States, Japan, and so on will not be
    eligible.
    The aim of the MA in Peace and Reconciliation Studies is to "enable
    students to develop the knowledge and skill base necessary to
    understand
    the linkages between the different levels of destructive conflict in
    the
    world, to understand the theory and practice of peace-making and
    peace-building at the various levels, and to evaluate alternative modes
    of action and intervention in the attempt to transform violent and

    Ph.D. Fellowships in Economics
    University of Milan (Italy)
    The Ph.D. in Economics of the University of Milan offers advanced
    research training in several fields of theoretical and applied
    economics. During the first year, entirely spent in Italy, students
    attend core courses in mathematics, econometrics, microeconomics,
    macroeconomics, some selected field courses (including international
    trade, and competition and regulation) and methodological courses
    (including game theory and epistemology). Students?T achievements are
    assessed through final examinations at the end of each group of
    courses.
    Students are encouraged to spend their second year abroad. Second-year
    students are required to attend ad***ional courses and seminars in the
    fields they have selected for their research activity. Moreover, by the
    end of the year, each student is expected both to produce a first draft
    paper for her/his dissertation and *****bmit and discuss a detailed
    project of the whole thesis. The third year, usually spent in Italy, is
    entirely devoted to the doctoral dissertation, under the supervision of
    one or more members of the Faculty.
    An exchange program covering all fields of economics is promoted with
    Queen Mary, University of London, the University of Leicester and the
    University of York in the United Kingdom, Boston College in the United
    States, and the Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium. Each
    foreign institution accepts at least two students per year from our
    Ph.D. program in Economics. Research students can also enrol in the two
    recently launched joint Doctorates with Queen Mary, University of
    London, and the University of Leicester, respectively.
    For the academic year 2006-2007 there will be two selection phases. The
    first and the second selection will be based on an interview. For the
    first selection the interviews will be held in early June 2006. For the
    second selection the interviews will be held in September 2006.

    CALL FOR APPLICATIONS õ?" 2006/2007
    The Graduate School in Social, Economic and Political Sciences of the
    University of Milan
    The Graduate School in Social, Economic and Political Sciences of the
    University of Milan (www.graduateschool.unimi.it) offers four Ph.D.
    programs: Economics, Labour Studies, Political Studies and Sociology.
    Each program focuses primarily on advanced training in the respective
    discipline to enable students to master the dominant paradigms,
    research
    methods and essential literature. In ad***ion, the Graduate School
    provides an opportunity for cross-disciplinary training in approaches
    and methods. The objective is to teach graduate students to combine the
    rigorous use of their disciplinary tool-kit with knowledge of the
    tool-kits of adjacent disciplines. First year students of the four
    doctorates share the same working environment at the Graduate School at
    the University of Milan. This provides opportunities for interacting
    and
    exchanging research interests. Second and third year students will work
    in close contact with their supervisor in the research departments
    partners of the School. They will also be encouraged to spend at least
    one term as visiting students in one of the foreign Universities which
    are partners of the Graduate School. Admission is open to candidates
    from all countries. A good knowledge of English is required. Several
    scholarships are available for EU citizens and non-EU citizens resident
    in the EU.
    THE PH.D. PROGRAMS
    Economics
    The aim of this Ph.D. program is to provide advanced training in both
    economic theory and applied economics for high level research in the
    field. The duration of the doctoral program is three years and can be
    extended up to four years. The first year is devoted to the main
    courses
    in quantitative methods, microeconomics and macroeconomics. During the
    second year students are encouraged to spend a period as visiting
    scholars abroad. The third year is devoted to the completion of the

    Labour Studies
    The interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Labour Studies aims at providing
    high level training to doctoral students in all those disciplines which
    are relevant to the understanding of labour issues in a complex
    society,

    relations, welfare and labour policy, organizational-corporate studies.
    At the same time, students will be trained to work at the frontier of
    scientific research within a specific area with the final objective of

    The aim of this doctoral program is to train professionals who can

    The aim of this program is to provide structured training in

    sociological fields and to introduce students to current international

    the country and it has formed some of the most outstanding academic
    sociologists who have gone on to make significant contributions to

    HOW TO APPLY
    For the academic year 2006-2007 there will be two selection phases. A
    first selection procedure takes place in May 2006. There will be 5
    scholarships, assigned as following:
    Ph.D. in Economics õ?" 2 scholarships Ph.D. in Labour Studies õ?" 1
    scholarship Ph.D. in Political Studies õ?" 1 scholarship Ph.D. in
    Sociology õ?" 1 scholarship.
    Two of these five scholarships are preferably designated to non EU
    applicants. The amount of the scholarship is approximately 10.500 õ,ơ per
    year.
    The second selection will take place within July 2006 with a new call
    for application. This selection will offer at least 1o positions with
    scholarship and 14 positions without scholarship. Candidates that
    applied in the first stage that did not obtain a scholarship but were
    considered eligible may re-apply for the second selection.
    The admission committee will be the same for every Ph.D. program in
    both
    stages. Students interested in applying to the Ph.D. programs of the
    Graduate School are invited to fill in the application form and to
    submit their Curriculum Vitae (CV); a research project in English; two
    letters of recommendation; University courses with test scores and
    final
    GPA (grade point average); copy of the Master dissertation including an
    English abstract; scientific publications, work experience if any,
    other
    qualifications and/or accomplishment. All these documents must be
    submitted by May 30th, 2006. Students must specify which of the four
    Ph.D. Programs of the Graduate School they are applying to.

    For Italian candidates a õ?oLaurea Magistraleõ? (or a "Laurea
