Job description: The Molecular Spectrometry and Dynamics group at the University of Provence (Marseille, France) is seeking outstanding candidates for a Ph.D. position in the field of astrochemistry.
This interdisciplinary project aims at studying in laboratory the formation and the destruction of interstellar organic molecules on ice mantles. An interstellar grain (made of water, methanol, ammonia forming a ?odirty? ice mantle surrounding a silicate core) will be simulated in laboratory and put under VUV radiations simulating a stellar flux. The reaction mechanisms driving its photochemical evolution will be studied using IR spectroscopy. This laboratory work will be used to propose astronomical detection of the resulting photoproducts, complex organic molecules up to amino-acids, in molecular hot cores, molecular clouds and comets. The role played by silicate surfaces onto the reactivity of ices will also be investigated to assess the importance of grain surface reactions in the chemical evolution of the interstellar medium.
The candidate should have excellent degrees in chemistry, chemical physics or in physics, with an interest in astrochemistry. Acquaintance with infrared spectroscopy is desired. We expect both the capability of independent research as well as teamwork spirit during the experiments and a strong motivation to learn new experimental techniques.
The duration of the contract is 3 years and the net salary is approximately 13000 euros a year.
Information on activities and publications of the group may be found at: http://www.up.univ-mrs.fr/wpiim/themes/sdm/mis.htm
Applications with complete resumes including a motivating cover letter stating the current (and future) research interests and the names and contact information of two references should be sent as soon as possible to either Dr. Thierry Chiavassa ( Thierry.Chiavassa@up.univ-mrs.fr ) or Dr. Patrice Theulé ( patrice.theule@univ-provence.fr ). The application deadline is June 20th 2006.

Job description: In our group, we work on an atom chip experiment where ultra-cold atoms are trapped in micro-magnetic traps made by micro-wires deposited on a chip. This technology enables the realization of very anisotropic geometry with a strong transverse confinement and various geometries. We plan to work on different directions.
First, the strong confinement available opens the possibility to investigate properties of very elongated ultra-cold Bose gas. This physics is almost unexplored experimentally yet. Many interesting behaviors are expected. In particular, effects of interactions play an important role and gas with strong correlations between atoms may be studied. Along this line, in our experiment, we measured density fluctuations in very elongated gas. We have observed the Bosonic bunching effect and, at higher density, a reduction of density fluctuations in the quasi-condensate regime. In this regime, the gas has locally properties of a Bose Einstein Condensate, although the system is not phase coherent on its entire length. We would like to pursue these work for gazes in the strong coupling regime where interactions between atoms are very strong. The gas is then expected to have similarities with a fermionic gas. In particular, it is expected to show anti-bunching.
The second direction of work is the realization of Josephson oscillations between two condensates coupled by tunnel effect in a double well potential. The realization of such oscillations would constitute a coherent beam splitter for a guided atomic interferometer. We would like to investigate the physics of two coupled condensates. For instance, we could study quantum fluctuations of atom number. We would also look for instabilities in such systems.
The work of the PhD student will be an experimental work involving the fabrication of chip (in collaboration with experts of nano-fabrication) and also a lot of optics for the optical cooling of the atoms and their detection. It also requires a solid theoretical background on atomic physics, quantum physics and statistical physics.

Cái này rất hay nhưng mà cũng hơi bị khó, phải thuộc loại outstanding và có leadership skill mới dám chơi!
The Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) is the new scholarship scheme which will be available for many developing countries for commencing in 2007. Vietnam is in the list. Current estimates are that around 300 PhD, 1200 Masters and 1700 fellowships will be under the program.
The application will open on May 1 2006 with a closing date of July 31 2006. It will be managed by AusAID. If you are looking for scholarships to studies in Australia you should visit the link below:
