The History of Saint-Petersburg State University for Waterways Communications, the oldest transport higher educational establishment of Russia dates back to 1809.

According to its high rating among higher technical educational establishments of Russia and foreign technical universities, Saint-Petersburg State University for Waterways Communications occupies the leading position, that is due to a highly professional teaching staff of this University, its rich technical facilities, modern technology and professional training programs, corresponding to the world standards.
For the whole history of its existence, the University more than 56000 professional specialists in the field of ship navigation, operation of ship equipment and power installation, administration of the waterways transport enterprises, off-shore and computer specialties. Every year about 1300 Russian and foreign students are admitted to the Saint-Petersburg State University for Waterways Communications.
The University is situated near the port, that helps students to get acquainted with the work organization of waterways transport.
Having graduated from the faculties of Port mechanization and Transport equipment; Navigation and Ship Engineering; Electrical engineering, the students get the diploma of Saint-Petersburg State University for Waterways Communications and a special document that it is recognized in Great Britain and certified by the London Institute of Chartering Engineers.
The University offers the 7 faculties and 28 different faculties:
Preparatory Faculty: For 50 years the professors of the University have been teaching Russian to foreign students. The training is held on 4 main directions:
1. Medicine
2. Engineering and technical direction
3. Economics
4. Humanitarian direction
With the utilization of the modern equipment and the most progressive methods of training, that''s why these students are so professionally prepared. After a successful graduation from the preparatory department, the student is given the Certificate of finishing the preparatory faculty - the document, that is necessary to be admitted to any of 508 higher educational institution of the Russian Federation. A student can continue his studies on the chosen specialty at Saint-Petersburg State University for Waterways Communications or change it.
Computer Science: Applied Mathematics and Informatics; Complex provision of informational security of automated systems; Information systems in techniques and technologies.
Hydrotechnical Faculty: Hydrotechnical Construction; Complex utilization and protection of water resources.
Port Mechanization and Transporting Equipment: Exploitation of port cargo equipment and transport terminals; Operation and Automatization of port installations and technological complex.
Ship Navigation: Navigation (the program meets the requirement of International Convention on Training of Graduate Seamen; Shipboard training for students is organized abroad the university training vessels "Vasily Kalashnikov" and " Pavel Yablochkov")
Ship Engineering: Shipbuilding; Ships'' electric power installations; Operation of Ships'' electric power installations.
Economics and Finance: Economics and Management (Finances and Cre***; Informational Systems in economics); Management (MBA, Hotel Management and Tourism); Economics and Operation in business (transport, shipbuilding and ship-repair); Antirecessionary Management.
Jurisprudence (Transport Law): Jurisprudence (Civil Law; Criminal Law; Theory of Law and Government; Transport Law).
Humanitarian Faculty: Cultural Studies, Sociology, Cultural Basis of Tourism.

All of the stated fees include tuition, accommodation in students'' hostel and life insurance.
Each student is guaranteed with accommodation in a comfortable students'' hostel: each block has single and double rooms, a common well-equipped kitchen, shower cabins and WC. The rooms are supplied with necessary and new furniture, bed linen and telephones. The hostel is situated not far from the metro station. There are a lot of shops and supermarkets.

Students are offered to use a huge library, spacious sport complex, well equipped computer class, students'' cafe and hospital. Saint-Petersburg is a large European scientific and cultural center with rich history.
